6 PART TIME EVENING CLASSES ELECTRICAL Electricity I Pre-requisite: Industrial Math Core This course offers basic understanding of electricity to provide the foundation needed to move on to wiring and more advanced electric courses. Instruction covers resistance, capacitive and inductive circuit analysis, power generation, AC and DC theory and simple series/parallel circuits. Electricity II Pre-requisite: Industrial Math Core and Electricity I Residential Wiring Pre-requisite: Electricity I, II Students will learn residential wiring practices and installation skills. Course topics include: service entrance panels, feeder and branch circuits, floor plans, wiring diagrams, ground fault action methods and residential accessory equipment. Construction Wiring Pre-requisite: Electricity I, II Students will familiarize themselves with single phase and three phase power distribution systems. Instruction includes: power cable systems, construction materials, fastening devices, commercial interior wiring systems, conduit and receiving designs and commercial lighting applications. Industrial Wiring Pre-requisite: Electricity I, II Students will learn the fundamentals of industrial wiring: H.I.D. lighting, emergency/exit sign lighting and wiring and use of the latest N.E.C. practices. Also included in the instruction will be appropriate bends and installation techniques for various types of conduit PVC, EMT and RIGID. This course builds from Electricity I and will introduce and focus on the basics of electronic theory. Students will need to advance to other electrical classes. Instruction includes: review of AC and DC theory and electronic components used in modern day electronic equipment. Digital multi-meters and oscilloscopes will be used in lab activities. Electric Motor Controls Pre-requisite: Industrial Math Core, Electricity I & II and Schematics This course will provide theory and practical work in the following areas: Electrical symbols, ladder and wiring diagrams, disconnect switches and circuit breakers, magnetic motors, starters, relays, overloads, control transformers, sequence control, time delay relays, temperature pressure limit and proximity switches and use of meter in troubleshooting and practical repair. Industrial Electricity (Electrical Controls, Connections & Ladder Logic) 96 hours (42 Hours Online, 54 Hours Hands on Job Activities If you learn best by doing, this web-based delivered training and hands on exercise performance, will teach you real-world, operation, troubleshooting, and the Need to Know aspects of electrical control systems found in industry today. Instruction is available, online 24/7 and through scheduled labs, covering topics on electrical safety, control components, control circuits, AC motors, ladder logic and troubleshooting. You will complete exercises as you construct and troubleshoot real electrical control circuits. Through this instruction and On the Job type hands-on experience, you will learn quickly and will retain what you have learned by your Hands-On practice. 6

7 PART TIME EVENING CLASSES Programmable Logic Controls (PLC) 72 hours (40 Hours Online, 32 Hours Hands on Job Activities) Pre-requisite: Industrial Electricity (Electrical Controls, Connections & Ladder Logic) If you learn best by doing, this web-based delivered training, along with hands-on exercise performance, will teach you through operation, troubleshooting, and the Need to Know aspects of programmable controllers found in automated industry today. Instruction is available, online 24/7 and through scheduled labs. Hands-on exercises are completed on real PLC hardware and software. You will learn to effectively install, program and troubleshoot PLC hardware and input/ output (I/O) circuits. You will be able to operate analog and digital I/O modules, processors, power supplies and programmable logic. Through this instruction and hands-on On the Job experience, you will learn quickly and will retain what you have learned. 70E Safety in the Workplace 26 Hours This class is designed to provide an explanation of the NFPA 70E regulations. The objectives of this class are the understanding of: NFPA 70E and its relationship to OSHA regulations, the general hazards of electricity including shock, arc flash, and arc blast, the difference between qualified and unqualified electrical workers and the importance and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). There will be open discussions on generally accepted safety techniques. National Electric Code - NEC Pre-requisite: Industrial Math Core and Electricity I Students will learn to use the National Electric Code with special emphasis on terms and labeling and how to find information in the NEC Book. Information concerning wiring and protection, wiring methods, materials, applications, and proper installation requirements will be covered. Schematics 36 Hours Pre-requisite: Electricity I Students will learn to interpret electrical control diagrams. Content will include labeling and identification of ladder and line diagrams and drawing control circuits. Students will complete wiring schematics from line diagrams and learn about the use of timers, interlocks and pressure/temperature controls. Troubleshooting control schemes are included. Polyphase Systems Pre-requisite: Industrial Math Core, Electricity I & II and Electric Motor Controls Students will be introduced to polyphase wiring systems, methods, transformer connections, mechanical/power relationships, alternators, motors and welding systems. Electrical Troubleshooting Pre-requisite: Electricity I, II or field experience This class will cover step-by-step troubleshooting applications and activities to reinforce concepts presented. Topics range from basic lighting, motors and controls through basic electronic components and preventative maintenance. INDUSTRY SPECIFIC HVAC I This is an introductory course in which the student will learn the fundamentals of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating. This course provides general basic knowledge in the HVAC systems, basic tool and service procedures and the understanding of gas heating equipment and controls. The main emphasis of the class is on theory with the addition of basic practical hands-on lab work. HVAC II Pre-requisite: HVAC I This is a continuation of theories of HVAC systems with an expansion of the fundamental theories of refrigeration and air conditioning. Emphasis is on the practical application of skills through hands-on lab projects. Instruction will include but not be limited to: safety, refrigeration process, system startup and charging, system evacuation, troubleshooting, service call situations and customer service. 7

8 PART TIME EVENING CLASSES HVAC III Pre-requisite: HVAC I & II This is a continuation of theories of HVAC systems with an expansion of the fundamental theories of heating. Emphasis is on the practiced applications through hands-on lab projects. Instruction will include but not be limited to: local codes and safety guidelines, operation and installation of various types of furnaces, troubleshooting of heating systems, service call situations and customer service. At the conclusion of HVAC III, registration information will be available for the EPA Technician Exam for Types I,II,III or universal certifications. Cosmetology Hours/NYS Board Review 80 Hours Pre-requisite: 840 Hours in NYS Cosmetology Program - transcript required Designed for students who need to complete the required 1000 hours of training for New York state Licensure. The program will include NYS cosmetology exam preparation with review for the written and practical exam requirements. General Blueprint Reading for Industry Pre-requisite: Industrial Math Core This class is designed to teach and develop the skills that are required to read and accurately interpret industrial blueprints. Included in the instruction are the concepts of spatial relations, shape visualization, line usage, and interpretation of multi-view drawings. devices, centrifugal pump fundamentals, pump systems, coupling devices, and complete pump alignment, seals and packing. Pipefitting Students will learn the safe and proper use of hand and power tools. Basic and advanced pipefitting principles covered will include soldering, flaring and bending copper tubing, and measuring and determining 45-degree offsets. The student will learn proper methods of pipe measurement. Also included in the instruction are determining allowances for all types of fittings and applying them to determine accurate measurements. Rigging In this course students learn rigging fundamentals. The units of instruction include: safety standards and procedures, fundamental calculations, fiber rope and fiber slings, hoisting chains and hooks, chain falls, trolleys and beam clamps, portable ladders, and different types of scaffolds. WELDING Basic Arc Welding Students will learn basic arc welding, including set-up and operation of welding machines and cutting torches. All welding positions: flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead are covered. Safety procedures will be taught and practiced. Course covers the theory and practice of stick welding. Industrial Math Core Brush up on the math skills needed to be successful in today s workforce. Students will be given the opportunity to learn, review, and practice using the basic operations of fractions, decimals, ratios, percents, proportions, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Mechanical Pump Maintenance and Repair Students will learn about proper bearing maintenance and pump repair. The course will cover types of pumps, lockout 8

9 PART TIME EVENING CLASSES Advanced Arc Welding Pre-requisite: Basic Arc Welding or proof of actual welding experience This program of instruction is intended to specialize in advanced arc welding skills. This course will include all position welding of butt and fillet joints and shielded metal arc using various mild sheet electrodes, and basic MIG and TIG welding of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Pipe Welding Pre-requisite: Basic Arc Welding and Advanced Arc Welding Students will become familiar with the fundamentals of pipe welding. Instruction will cover pipe construction, preparation and welding ADDITIONAL EVENING CLASSES Basic Automotive Mechanics 100 Hours Evenings Students will learn basic auto mechanics and diagnostics in preparation for ASE certification and New York state inspectors licensing. Instruction will include safety, suspension, engine fundamentals, cooling systems, scan tool operation, front end alignment and other facets of the auto industry. Basic/Advanced/Pipe Welding 200 Hours A combination program of basic arc, advanced, and pipe welding. A one semester class offering to meet the request of interested individuals. Basic Arc welding will include: set-up and operation of welding machines and cutting torches, flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead welding positions, and safety procedures. NO refund will be issued after the beginning of the second class. Cancellation of Class: a full refund will be issued if a class is cancelled by BOCES. ENROLLMENT: Enrollment for adults 17 years of age or older. Students currently enrolled in high school must present written authorization from a home school official and parent/ guardian to register for a night school class. Adult Education classes do not provide credit for high school programs. 11 LITERACY CLASSES TASC Preparation Classes (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) Many adults have not completed a formal high school program and need a high school diploma to obtain certain jobs, get promotions or attend college. The TASC makes it possible to earn a high school equivalency diploma regardless of age or length of time since leaving school. Free day and evening classes are available. GRASP GRASP is a free home study High School Equivalency Test Preparation program for adults who cannot attend our regular classes because of their work schedules, family responsibilities, transportation problems or other difficulties. You must be 21 years of age or older. ESOL ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes are provided for those who are not native speakers of English and would like to learn or improve their second language. Classes are offered at several sites in Niagara and Orleans counties. You may prepare for the American citizenship test in all classes. 13 HEALTH RELATED CLASSES Licensed Practical Nursing LPN The Orleans/Niagara BOCES full time adult Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program accepts applications for both the Medina and Sanborn sites. The Orleans/Niagara BOCES LPN program is an excellent opportunity for students who are looking for a program that concentrates solely on nursing. The 1220 hour program is rich in both the theory and clinical experiences that are required to prepare students for licensure and employment as an LPN. Throughout the program emphasis is placed on applying nursing knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors to real health care situations. This program follows a 4 day a week scheduling format that allows students to pursue their nursing education while they fufill work/family responsibilities. Federal financial aid is available for eligible LPN students. 14 HEALTH RELATED CLASSES Nursing Assistant CNA This course prepares the student to work as a hospital or long-term care Nursing Assistant. The course has a theory, lab and clinical component to teach the principles and skills required for the New York State Nurse Assisting Registry Skill and written exams. Classes are in Sanborn, Niagara Falls and Albion. The class is 150 hours in length, daytime hours, with varying schedules. New classes start every 6-8 weeks. VA (Veterans Administration) funding eligible Phlebotomy In accordance with CDC and OSHA guidelines, this 70-hour part-time course combines the theory, lab practice and clinical skills required to perform venipunctures. Successful completers can find employment with these skills as phlebotomists in a variety of health care settings. Classes scheduled evenings (5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.). VA (Veterans Administration) funding eligible Home Health Aide Orleans/Niagara BOCES Home Health Aide Program is an approved training program designed to prepare the mature trainee to provide assistance and carry out health care tasks for patients in their homes or substitute homes. HHA classes consist of 75 hours of theory and lab instructions and 30 hours of clinical instruction. CNA to HHA Transition Program The CNA to HHA transition program is a 40 hour theory program. A cognitive written exam will be given at the end of instruction. The minimum passing score on the HHA Equivalency test is 75%. This test includes both a written and skills section. Requirements: 1. CNA certificate with one full year of experience in a hospital or SNF in the last five years 2. HHA who has not worked as an HHA in the last 24 consecutive months 3. Documented HHA or CNA training from an out of state program 4. 15 SPECIAL PROGRAMS Adults in the Secondary Classes Orleans/Niagara BOCES accepts adults at least 17 years of age into secondary career and technical classes as space permits. A High School Equivalency is required. Classes meet Monday through Friday following the high school calendar. First year students attend the afternoon session between 12:15 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. Second year students meet from 8:15 to 10:40 a.m. A two-year certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the program. For more information, contact Jackie Coyle at (716) , ext Apprenticeship Related Training Orleans/Niagara BOCES offers courses for individuals enrolled in the New York State Apprenticeship Program and Employer In-Plant Programs. BOCES has been selected by the Education Department to be the Lead Educational Agency for Niagara and Orleans Counties. NYS apprentice related courses have been developed to help the apprentice meet the related instruction portion, Appendix B, for his/her apprenticeship. Apprentices are required to maintain a 90% attendance rate and a minimum grade average of 75% for each class completed. It is the responsibility of the apprentice and the sponsoring employer to fulfill the attendance hour requirements. For more information on apprenticeship related training, please contact Jackie Coyle at (716) , ext Customized Workforce Training Orleans/Niagara BOCES has been providing skilled trades and/or workplace literacy training and related services to area companies, unions, professional organizations and others for two decades. BOCES can provide administrative and technical assistance to develop courses and programs tailored to meet the specific needs of an organization/business. The course/program content developed relates directly to the goals and objectives of the organization/business. The training and/or services may be held at organization/business locations or at the BOCES centers.
