1 The leader in quality nurse practitioner education NONPF Leadership Mentoring Program Background In 2014 National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) developed a program for senior nurse practitioner faculty who have assumed leadership roles in their academic institutions as program directors and/or other administrators Participants learn self-development processes (group processes and testing to learn more about individual strengths and needs for improvement), methods of leading NP education programs, and strategies for preparing the future health care provider (creating a systems vision and leading in curricular innovation) Participants meet initially for an orientation session during the NONPF annual spring meeting followed by an intensive session in the summer Participants are assigned a mentor selected from a cadre of NONPF members with advanced leadership training NONPF will support a 4th cohort of the NONPF Leadership Mentoring Program for the period 1-year starting in April 2018 The one-year initiative will help to prepare and empower new and emerging leaders in NP education for the challenges ahead Purpose To replenish the pipeline of quality nurse practitioner for diverse and challenging roles in the US health care system by ensuring a network of exemplary nurse practitioner (NP) faculty leaders and to guide leading edge NP faculty in developing academic transformational leadership capacity Objectives Examine the self-development processes, including an understanding of individual strengths and areas or improvement Apply methods of leading NP education programs such as strategic management skills, curriculum guidelines implementation, budgets and data management for continuous quality improvement Compare different leadership styles and the situations in which they apply Discover strategies to lead systems and innovation Evaluate ones leadership style in different situations 1615 M Street, NW, Ste 270, Washington, DC Tel202/ Fax202/ wwwnonpforg

2 Project Description The program will be overseen by the NONPF CEO and staff with support from Co-Leads, Dr Jenna Herman, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, Dr Anna S Hamrick, DNP, FNP-C, Dr Cathleen Crowley-Koschnitzki, DNP, CNM, WHP-BC, FNP-C, CNE, all participants in the second NONPF Leadership Mentoring program and Shannon Idzik, DNP, CRNP, FAANP, Associate Professor, Associate Dean of DNP Program at the University of Maryland School of Nursing NONPF and the program leads will select a cohort of up to 8 NP faculty members to participate in the Leadership Mentoring Program The participants will examine critical issues that challenge leaders and engage in discussions that include Serving on Boards Writing for publications Policy advocacy Evaluating NP programs Innovation and excellence Leading with emotional intelligence Coaching teams towards excellence Leadership strengths assessment The program will include 4 phases: Phase 1 will begin in April 2018, in conjunction with the NONPF 2018 Annual Conference with an orientation to the program Phase 2 will include a period of beginning work with mentors and participating in a series of Webinars Webinar themes may include the following: 1) Leadership, 2) Leading Quality NP Programs, 3) Leading NP Curricular Innovations, 4) Budgeting & Program Finances, and 5) Establishing and Achieving Personal Goals Nationally recognized leaders will provide content for the Webinars Phase 3 will include the summer of 2018 through winter 2018 Participants will convene in person in Washington, DC for a 2-day meeting in August 2018 Participants will again meet for 1 day in advance of the Special Topics Conference for leadership discussions with the project leads and other cohort participants This meeting will include presentations by nurse leaders and others on topics such as policy, communications, leadership principles, personal development, business development, and more Throughout this phase, participants will work closely with mentors and have periodic phone calls for leadership advice Phase 4 will consist of an evaluation of project goals and further leadership development at the 2019 NONPF Annual Conference The cohorts typically plan to submit an abstract for the following annual conference on some aspect of the program 1615 M Street, NW, Ste 270, Washington, DC Tel202/ Fax202/ wwwnonpforg

3 Tentative NONPF Leadership Mentoring Participant Schedule April 18, NONPF 2018 Annual Conference Indianapolis, Indiana One Half Day Pre-Conference Workshop and Orientation to Program June 20, Webinar 1 August 15-16, Leadership Institute Washington, DC Two-Day Workshop October 17, Webinar 2 Nov/Dec NONPF Special Topics Conference Washington, DC One and One Half Day Pre-Conference Workshop January 16, Webinar 3 March 20, Webinar 4 April 4, NONPF 2019 Annual Conference Atlanta, Georgia One Half Day Pre-Conference Workshop and Welcome of New Cohort * Monthly Interactions with Mentors to Be Independently Scheduled Estimated Costs Participants (or their home institutions) will cover hotel and transportation expenses for participation in the two NONPF Annual Meetings, the 2-day Leadership Institute meeting in Washington, DC, and the NONPF Special Topics Conference Based on prior year expenses per participants, it is estimated the program expenses are between $3500 to $5000 for the year NONPF will provide complimentary meeting registration for participants to the above-mentioned conferences Should certain pre-conferences or additional registration sessions apply to leadership development, NONPF will also provide complimentary registration for participants to those sessions during the term of the program NONPF will also provide publications and other leadership development resources to participants at no cost to participants All meeting, webinar, and other program costs will be covered by NONPF 1615 M Street, NW, Ste 270, Washington, DC Tel202/ Fax202/ wwwnonpforg

4 Eligibility Criteria NONPF will select participants with consideration of creating a mix of participants from a range of perspectives and backgrounds and who represent small, large, urban, and rural NP programs An applicant must be: Active full-time appointment with a NP program Currently teaching in a NP program 2-5 years of teaching experience in a NP program Current certification as a NP NONPF member Doctoral preparation or progress toward completion of a doctoral degree Preferred current practice as a NP Application and Selection Process Interested NP faculty members should submit the 1-page application with supporting documentation: 1 Letter of interest detailing personal and/or professional goals that s/he would hope to address during the program and an explanation of how s/he could benefit from the program The letter should not exceed 2 pages 2 Letter of support from the applicant s home institution confirming a commitment to allowing the faculty member to participate, attend the three conferences, a two-day workshop in DC and have time to complete other program activities, such as webinar and monthly mentoring calls If an institution agrees to cover the travel expenses and other expenses, this can be included in the letter The letter of support should be from the lead person for the NP program in which the applicant teaches and/or the program director or dean, if necessary for commitment of funding support 3 A current copy of the applicant s curriculum vitae NONPF must receive all application material by December 15, M Street, NW, Ste 270, Washington, DC Tel202/ Fax202/ wwwnonpforg
