1 Virginia Western Educational Foundation Innovation Grant Application Focus on Retention For the first time in 20 years, Virginia Western s enrollment has fallen below 11,000 students. The Educational Foundation seeks to encourage faculty and staff creativity in developing strategies to increase enrollment and retain students earning a degree, certificate or credential. Innovation Grant proposals with the goal of boosting retention, will receive five extra points on scoring of the grant proposal.
2 Educational Foundation Faculty and Staff Innovation Grant Application STUDENT RETENTION Proposals that address the Educational Foundation s strategic focus for 2018 will receive 5 bonus points in scoring process. Directions: Complete this form in Word. Refer to the scoring matrix as you complete your application. 1. Before you print the final document, save an electronic copy for your files. 2. Print a copy to be signed. 3. Secure the required signatures. Note earlier deadlines for signatures. 4. Two copies of completed grant applications must be received by 4 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2018, in the VWCC Educational Foundation office, Room F214, Fishburn Hall. Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted. 3 About the Educational Foundation: The Virginia Western Community College Educational Foundation, Inc. is an independent not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) foundation dedicated to: Enhancing community awareness of the Community College Access Program. Securing private and public funds for student scholarships, faculty development, and capital projects. Providing prudent fiscal management of monies and properties stewarded by the Educational Foundation. Educational Foundation Mission: Separate from the College, but committed to expand upon the College's accomplishments and to help it realize its fullest potential in the years to come, the Educational Foundation is governed by a board of directors that supports the College's educational initiatives through annual and capital programs. Our mission is to foster life-long relationships that build advocacy and support for Virginia Western. What is innovation? Innovation is creativity in action: The introduction of new ideas, projects or methods to address a need or solve a problem. The Foundation annually awards the Faculty and Staff Innovation Grants to encourage academic enrichment activities. These awards are typically NOT funded by the VCCS s professional development initiatives, the Equipment Trust Fund or the college s regular operating budget. Faculty and staff, which includes adjunct faculty and part-time staff, should consider proposing innovative projects, novel approaches, and creative activities that support Virginia Western s mission, vision, core values, and goals, which are listed below. Proposals that address the Foundation s annual strategic focus (noted at the top of the cover page) will receive 5 bonus points. Success: Collaborate to provide and promote services and programs to encourage success among all students, faculty, staff and the community. Teamwork: Partner with internal and external stakeholders to provide practical and relevant educational opportunities. 4 I. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Project goals: Goals are the broad statements that provide focus and direction for meeting the project s objectives. Project objectives: Objectives are measurable statements that indicate what the project will specifically accomplish (i.e., Improve student retention by 10% over two years). Project summary: Summarize your project in no more than 100 words. Include the need that it will address, the difference you want to make, and some details about how you will make that difference. Do not include dollar figures in this summary. Target population: Identify your project s target population and the number of individuals who will benefit. Alignment with VWCC s Strategic Plan: How does your project support a specific VWCC institutional goal and/or the Educational Foundation s annual focus area? Collaboration: List all other college employees and/or departments participating in the project and describe their roles and responsibilities. II. PROJECT TIMELINE: List the major activities of the project in chronological order. Include a start date and end date for each activity, and indicate who is responsible for completing the activity. Add/delete rows as necessary. Note that projects may begin after May 15, 2018, but must be completed with final report, invoices and receipts delivered to the Educational Foundation by end of business March 29, Major activities Start date End date Person responsible 4
5 III. BUDGET: The budget is the itemized spending plan for your project. Total requests will be considered up to $10,000. Funds may NOT be used for services or materials normally provided by the departmental offices (copies, printing, etc.). Funds may not be used to cover student worker labor or student travel requests. Limited funds are available for food/hospitality. Which instruments and methods (quantitative and/or qualitative) will you use? How will you collect and analyze data? Describe how the results of the project will be shared.
