Setting the Context Student Nurse Advocacy Program Provides confidential, safe spaces for dialogue between nursing students, supported by faculty where those in higher terms can guide those in lower terms. Nursing Leadership & Management Program Designed to effectively prepare Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) for eligibility and application for nurse licensure.

Background Mentorship a longstanding effective strategy Peer mentorship gaining interest in academia Little research focusing on peer mentorship and IEN

Guiding Questions What are the needs of an IEN registered in a Post Degree Certificate (PDC) program at Langara College in the School of Nursing? How will participants describe their experience in Student Nurse Advocacy Program (SNAP) s mentorship program?

Appreciative Inquiry Methodology Purposive Sample Data Collection Survey Focus Group Interview Thematic Analysis Discovery Destiny Dream Design

Promoting Cultural Understanding IEN Participant When it comes to Canada, they can really help us. So now I know about poutine. And I think wearing leggings is a Canadian thing. This has really improved our communication skills. SNAP Participant I always considered myself... culturally aware, but I noticed all these gaps where I had been ignorant.

IEN Participant Nurturing Trust and Support It made me feel better because it made me feel like, it s not only me, but everyone was struggling...she supported me in so many ways, so it was really great. This is the way we are going through each day here. We are humans and we need support of each other.... I actually appreciate that they are very conscious about being sensitive to how I feel. Sometimes my mentor will nod, or suggest some words, etc. It really helps. SNAP Participant It was a mutual beneficial relationship.

IEN Participant Fostering Integration This has really improved our communication skills. I am introverted but it has helped me to become more extroverted. At student nurses week, she phoned us to come and join. All of us went for this event and we all participated. That was a great experience. SNAP Participant There should be IEN (PDC) students in SNAP, all the nurses, not just the BSNs.

IEN Participant Blending of Roles To be honest, our major concerns are about assessments, the NNAS, visas, exams, etc..they (SNAP) can t relate to that. We still have difficulty with how to process this stuff. But besides all of that, they have helped us a lot with things like the ATI. SNAP Participant It was difficult to know in what capacity to be a mentor.learning their stories has been inspiring for me. Its is interesting too because at this stage I might be seen as her mentor, but I could see that next year, when we re both in the work force, our roles would change. She has way more experience as a nurse that I do.

Dreams Enhance IENs transition into Langara s educational system and Canadian culture. Complement existing ways of interacting and communicating Broaden cultural awareness Redefine mentorship

Limitations Methodology Sample Length of study Researcher-developed survey

Reflective Moment.. If you go back to our countries, especially to the Asian countries, you will not get respect as a nurse. For them, a nurse is someone to take care of them or give service because they are paying a lot... So we found that Canada is a place where we are respected as nurses here. This is why we all came here with a dream.
