Scrubs ad hats wor durig dirty or cotamiated cases should be chaged prior to subsequet cases eve if ot visibly soiled. Masks should ot be wor daglig at ay time. Operatig room scrubs should ot be wor i the hospital facility outside of the operatig room area without a clea lab coat or appropriate cover-up over them. Operatig room scrubs should ot be wor at ay time outside of the hospital perimeter. Operatig room scrubs should be chaged at least daily. Durig ivasive procedures, the mouth, ose, ad hair (skull ad face) should be covered to avoid potetial woud cotamiatio. Large sideburs ad poytails should be covered or cotaied. There is o evidece that leavig ears, a limited amout of hair o the ape of the eck or a modest sidebur ucovered cotributes to woud ifectios. Earrigs ad jewelry wor o the head or eck where they might fall ito or cotamiate the sterile field should all be removed or appropriately covered durig procedures. The ACS ecourages clea appropriate professioal attire (ot scrubs) be wor durig all patiet ecouters outside of the operatig room. The skullcap is symbolic of the surgical professio. The skullcap ca be wor whe close to the totality of hair is covered by it ad oly a limited amout of hair o the ape of the eck or a modest sidebur remais ucovered. Like operatig room scrubs, cloth skull caps should be cleaed ad chaged daily. Paper skull caps should be disposed of daily, ad followig every dirty or cotamiated case. Religious beliefs regardig headwear should be respected without compromisig patiet safety. Scrubs are used by may differet health care providers i a hospital settig (surgeos, aesthesiologists, itesivists, CRNAs, laboratory techicias, aids, etc.) The ACS strogly suggests that scrubs should ot be wor outside the perimeter of the hospital by ay health care provider. To facilitate eforcemet of this guidelie of operatig room persoel, the ACS suggests the adoptio of distictive, colored scrub suits for the operatig room persoel. As stewards of our professio, we must retai emphasis o key priciples of our culture, icludig proper attire, sice attetio to such detail will help uphold the public perceptio of surgeos as highly trustworthy, attetive, professioal, ad compassioate.

Berry Jr. Visitig Professor Vascular Surgery Lecture: Dr. Adres Schazer Edovascular Aortic Aeurysm Repair: Past, Preset, ad Future Dr. Adres Schazer is a professor of surgery i the Divisio of Vascular ad Edovascular Surgery at the Uiversity of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Ceter ad Uiversity of Massachusetts Medical School i Worcester, Massachusetts, with a secodary appoitmet as professor of quatitative health scieces. Dr. Schazer s primary focus is the expasio ad rigorous evaluatio of edovascular therapies for complex aortic disease. He is the foudig director of the UMass Memorial Ceter for Complex Aortic Disease, which has become oe of the leadig programs i the coutry for the treatmet of complex aortic disease. He also serves as the program director for the Uiversity of Massachusetts Itegrated Vascular Surgery Residecy Program, where he formally supervises a full complemet of 10 vascular surgery residets. After graduatig from Harvard College, Dr. Schazer eared his medical degree at New York Uiversity School of Medicie. He completed his geeral surgery traiig at Uiversity of Califoria, Davis, i Sacrameto, Califoria. Dr. Schazer the completed the Joh Homas Vascular Surgery fellowship at Brigham ad Wome s Hospital i Bosto, Massachusetts. Followig his Fellowship, he was fortuate to lear from ad collaborate with Dr. Roy Greeberg at the Clevelad Cliic, a atioally recogized pioeer i the developmet of edovascular therapies for the treatmet of complex aortic disease. Dr. Schazer is the priciple ivestigator of the CARPE-CMD (Complex Aortic Repair usig Physicia Modified Edografts ad Custom Made Devices) trial, a physicia-sposored ivestigatioal device exemptio (IDE) trial. He also serves as site priciple ivestigator, co-ivestigator, or DSMB member for multiple other cliical trials. He has published over 100 peer reviewed mauscripts as well as multiple ivited book chapters, is a member of the editorial board of the Joural of Vascular Surgery, ad is a distiguished fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery.
