2 A Message from the President and Sharing Wisdom: President Art, Leadership Elect and Therapeutic Recreation What do art, leadership and therapeutic recreation have in common? Personally, they are three things that fascinate me, I am passionate about and I seek more knowledge on. But more than that, each involves a willingness to see things differently, to challenge the limits for a deeper level of understanding and or a greater good. Every moment, every person, every situation has something to teach you. Stay in each moment long enough to learn something new and surprising. I recently read an article by Cathy O Keefe, M.Ed., CTRS called, The Importance of Philosophy: An Introductory Address to Students, Educators and Practitioners. In her article, O Keefe states, a wise person once told me that the study of philosophy is much like the process of creating a painting in that it reflects the artist s perspective of the subject from the ground on which he or she stands Students, educators and practitioners in therapeutic recreation operate from a set of assumptions influenced by their academic preparation, experience in the field, and personal values and beliefs These assumptions must be continually reflected upon over time so the individual, like the painter, maintains a sound perspective on practice, the needs of clients and professional conduct. In learning to know other things, and other minds, we become more intimately acquainted with ourselves, and are to ourselves better worth knowing. Philip Gilbert Hamilton Supervising and working with interns is something else I enjoy and see as an opportunity to share my experience and lead or guide someone closer to where they want to be. In addition, interns also bring with them their own experiences and ideas for us to bounce around and ultimately benefit from. Naturally, this elicits the digging in to our own values and beliefs to see if we are still operating in accordance to our own philosophy of practice or if there has been or needs to be a shift. To be a good leader, one must not only lend or share wisdom but also be willing to listen and to learn. (The best leaders and artists) bring us closer together by providing a forum for shared experiences and by forging a sense of community. Michael O Malley As Recreational Therapists, we all have ideas, beliefs, experiences, and stories to share so that others in the field and those we serve, can benefit. We are already looking for presenters like you to lead us by lending your wisdom for the 2014 ITRA Annual Conference. If you would like to present or have an idea, please contact Jerra Buster at jerrat.buster@gmail.com. Understanding Regulatory Language in Recreational Therapy Practice Be sure to by follow Thomas the ITRA K. 10 Reminder: New CEU Guidelines Thank you for the positive response to our most recent revisions to the CEU manual! We have revised sample forms as well as the narrative in response to your valued feedback. As you may know, ATRA has also established a pre-approval process with NCTRC to ensure that your participants investments in continuing education will count toward recertification. Pre-approval inspires confidence which will increase attendance. If your organization is interested in pre-approval of your conference or workshop CEUs, please refer to the updated version of the CEU manual. Contact ceu@atra-online.com with questions. Historic Collection Package Deal on Annual in TR Collection This Spring we retired another volume of the Annual in TR, making room for the next volume with more recent research. This also means the Historical Collection Package now includes ten books for just $70. Many of these are in the original shrink wrap. We only have enough inventory for one more order. These books are no longer in print so one lucky person will be able to order a very valuable additionto their library. Retired volumes are no longer worth CEUs. Annual Convention - Mark Your Calendar Building Bridges of Possibilities ATRA's 2013 convention will be held at the beautiful Sheraton Station Square Hotel located in downtown Pittsburgh, in the heart of a 52-acre riverfront complex. Sheraton Station Square Hotel is Pittsburgh's only riverfront hotel, adjacent to 20 restaurants within the Shops at Station Square, Bessemer Court and the Gateway Clipper Riverboat fleet. ATRA has secured a fabulous room rate for attendees of $134 for single/double and $154 for triple/quadruple (plus applicable taxes, currently 14%).
