1 Spring 2017 BON APPEI! A s the lights dimmed on he Willows dining room one recent evening, the Willows dining staff reflected on another memorable meal service that had just taken place. he food was prepared to perfection with the freshest ingredients, the seafood was of the highest quality, the meats were cut by hand with laser-like precision, and the produce was locally sourced from the area s best producers. Dinner service is like a symphony, with many individual moving parts that are intertwined together into a seamless singularity to produce a culinary masterpiece. Here at St Andrews, we realize that today s seniors have a much more discerning palate and demand a healthier menu with top quality creative cuisine. In order to provide this to the residents, St. Andrew s is fortunate to employ the finest Culinary Directors and Chefs with strong backgrounds in country clubs, hotels, Residents enjoy a meal prepared by the Chef and restaurants in the St. Louis region. It s not just the employees who make the dining experience so memorable food committees, made up of staff and residents, help ensure open communication so that chefs know exactly what the residents want. Plus, kitchen staff are continually updating their training, because there is no finish line when it comes to keeping guests happy. he St. Andrew s culinary team is led by Chef Charles White, who spent many years in country clubs and hotels before joining St. Andrew s. Charles leads his team by example with an emphasis on customer service, scratch cooking, creativity, and food safety, as well as an expectation that the food served at St. Andrew s senior communities should be restaurant-quality in taste and appearance. Residents are also treated to monthly themed parties, weekly specials, and seasonally changing menus to keep the dining experience enjoyable. Bon appétit! RESIDENS HRILLED FOR NEW BUILDING OPENING A fter many months of anticipation, residents of the new Willows building began moving into their new apartment homes this spring and quickly felt right at home in their new surroundings. One such couple is Howard and Anna Anthes, who are thrilled with their new two-bedroom, two-bathroom Freesia apartment. We d been coming to exercise classes at he Willows for several months prior to our move, Howard said. We felt we were moving to a place where we already had friends, making the transition that much easier. Rightsizing from a large home into their 1,470 square-foot apartment was also much easier than they had expected. here was plenty of room for all our pictures and memorabilia. he move itself was painless, other than feeling a little tired the next day, Howard laughed. We loved that they provided us a welcome basket and free lunch the day of our move that helped so much and made us feel genuinely welcomed. he couple originally decided to move to he Willows because of the close-knit community feel as well as the fantastic amenities, such as the full-service spa, fantastic restaurants, and 160-seat theater. he common areas are great, Howard continued. here s a library, multiple sitting areas, a guest suite, even a game room. hey all became an extension of our own apartment so we don t miss the space or always having to keep those areas tidy. Executive Director Heather Finkelston wholeheartedly agreed. Our employees love going that extra mile for our residents, she said. We pride ourselves on our Red Carpet service, and we feel like we ve earned our great reputation. hat reputation led to every single one of the 45 apartment homes being reserved before the new building even opened, and the growing waiting list shows that people still want to join the community. I m so glad that my wife really took the lead with this, Howard added. It s so great to be here and not have anxiety about the future. he Willows really has helped us worry less! IN HIS ISSUE... 2 S. ANDREW S RESOURCES FOR SENIOR SYSEM St. Andrew s Vision is a society where all older adults are respected, productive, secure and fulfilled. Among the tools we use in making that vision a reality are specialized divisions, programs and services. BOARD OF DIRECORS Rev. Dr. Richard Ellerbrake, Chair Lisa Bernstein, Vice Chair Rev. Much of today s leading technology innovation is being developed for adults age 65 plus. ech companies, research universities and healthcare providers are all keenly aware of the growing demand for new technology that can support independence and strengthen the ability to provide supportive services. Senior living organizations like St. Andrew s are helping to lead the charge. In 2012 and 2014 LeadingAge and Ziegler interviewed Chief Financial Officers from senior living community organizations to find out how those organizations are investing in technology. In just that two year period, investment in providing residents with access to the Internet and social networking sites jumped by 31 percent. Investment is electronic medical/ health record systems (EMR/HER) increased from 46 percent to 63 percent. Data comparing 2013 to 2015 revealed that organizations investing in the leadership position of Chief echnology/ Innovation Officer increased from 21 percent to 33 percent. he return on investment implications are significant. Organizations can deliver the Mary Alice Ryan, Pres. / CEO same services with greater staff efficiencies and reduced staff travel costs while increasing client assistance. By prolonging the health, quality of life and independence of seniors, hospital readmission rates will decrease and the senior can experience a savings on longterm care cost. St. Andrew s recognizes this return on investment for our organization and more importantly, for our seniors. In the coming months we are exploring the idea of developing a center for the advancement of innovation in eldercare. We are pleased to be working with leadership from the Center for Aging Service echnologies at LeadingAge to understand the bounty of opportunities ahead. We invite you to join us on this journey and look forward to sharing our progress with you. Velma Wachter Harry Wilson HONORARY BOARD MEMBERS: Blanche ouhill, Ph.D. Douglas H. Wilton S. 3 A RENEWED FOCUS ON RESIDEN SAISFACION A s an innovator in the field of senior living, St. Andrew s is always seeking out new approaches to improve the lives of older adults in the St. Louis area. And when it comes to our retirement communities, the well-being and satisfaction of residents is of the upmost importance. It was in this spirit that the management team decided to implement a cutting-edge program to ensure that all employees are delivering the best possible service and creating positive impacts within each community. Based upon recommendations from LeadingAge, a national association of nonprofit senior organizations, St. Andrew s contracted with Red Carpet Learning Systems to create a blueprint for improving customer service at all levels at each community. Rather than utilizing a traditional top-down system of training, Red Carpet seeks to get every staff member involved in the decision-making process and gives them the authority to implement positive changes. During a four-day session in early February, 32 staff members gathered to participate in the initial training conference. Participants included employees from Brooking Park, he Willows, St. Andrew s Assisted Living of Bridgeton, ower Grove Manor, St. Andrew s at Francis Place, Cape Albeon, and St. Andrew s Senior Solutions. Rather than just teaching the basics of the program, the sessions focused on making each participant a trainer in their own right, then sending them back to their communities to help others with the tools and tips they learned. he best part of the program is that we now have 32 coaches who are able to train other employees, said Charles White, Corporate Culinary Director at St. Andrew s and implementation coordinator for the program. Peer-based education is found to be the most effective learning technique, and over the next four months, these coaches will ensure that every single staff member learns about the Red Carpet system. he Red Carpet program consists of five aspects that focus on excellence: Sincerely welcome, ake note & adjust, Act with urgency, Recover with style, and Surprise & delight. his SARS approach helps each employee take the necessary steps to create an enjoyable atmosphere for residents and guests. Staff members are rewarded for going above and beyond their regular duties and adopting the SARS approach into all aspects of their daily routines. his innovative approach to resident satisfaction will not just make our communities a more fulfilling place to live, but our successes will also serve as a model for other senior organizations to follow, both locally and nationally, added Charles. We look forward to making this an ongoing process that improves over time. As we all learned in the training sessions, taking care of our residents has no finish line. HOMER SCHMIZ HEALH CLINIC A S. ANDREW S OF JENNINGS OPENS! I n January 2017 Senior Solutions guided the opening of the Homer Schmitz Health Clinic at St. Andrew s of Jennings, one of the affordable senior housing communities sponsored by St. Andrew s Resources for Seniors. he Clinic is made possible by a charitable grant provided by Good Samaritan, Inc., and is conducted in partnership with Institute for Family Medicine (Dr. David Campbell) and Deaconess Faith Community Nurses. he Clinic Director is Senior Solutions Geriatric Care Manager, Aimee Watson, who oversees general operations, as well monitor patient outcomes and develop funding and community resources to support the Clinic. he Service Coordinator at St. Andrew s Jennings, Kathleen Ross, is also a part of the team to work with the residents and the healthcare providers to provide coordination of benefits and referrals to ensure maximum benefit of resources available. Resources include health education, improved access to eye and dental care. he Clinic will provide on-site, walk-in healthcare services to all residents of the Jennings community at no cost. A faith community nurse is available three days per week to monitor blood pressure, blood sugar, breathing, and manage medications. A nurse practitioner will be available two days per week, and a physician two times per month, allowing residents to see a practitioner that can order tests and prescribe medications. he team works together to help coordinate healthcare, manage chronic conditions, and monitor residents after a hospitalization. Residents at Jennings now have access to a medical provider without leaving the facility, which is a substantial convenience due to the common obstacles encountered when finding transportation and getting a timely appointment. residents primary care physician (PCP), or they can choose to use Dr. Campbell as their PCP. In the first month the medical providers were able to educate a resident on proper use of diabetes medication; alert a resident s PCP about issues that needed to be addressed; and has taken on six new residents as their PCP. As one resident stated at a recent meeting, he Clinic reduced my anxiety, helped address my condition, and they were very professional. hank you so much! We are excited that the Homer Schmitz Health Clinic will provide Jennings residents convenient, consistent healthcare that they otherwise would may receive. According to Kathleen Ross, Service Coordinator at Jennings, he clinic is a very positive addition to St. Andrew s of Jennings. It seems to be especially beneficial for residents who have medication issues and those who have not seen a doctor for some time. I think being able to monitor residents with chronic conditions will be very helpful in maintaining their quality of life and preventing hospitalizations. he goal of the Clinic is for more residents seek consistent medical care in order to monitor conditions and manage them before becoming severe issues requiring costly visits to the emergency room or hospitalization. he Clinic can be used for periodic or urgent issues that may not be dealt with in a timely manner by the Homer Schmitz Health Clinic Staff: From left to right, Aimee Watson, MSW Clinic Director; Mary Ishmon, Faith Community Nurse; Jackie Miller, Nurse Practitioner and Dr. David Campbell, M.D. 3

5 FACES OF S. ANDREW S - MEE HE NOCKELS Dave and Sherry Nockels are grateful for Cape Albeon. heir life at Cape is good and they have special friendships, activities, and feel comfortable in their surroundings. hey hope others find this same happiness and have a full life at Cape Albeon. hey donate to the Friends of Cape Albeon Fund which helps seniors in need who need assistance. Dave and Sherry both understand that seniors are living much longer than they expected. Dave says, My religion teaches me to care and take care of others, I ve seen where help was needed, and I have chosen to help. Cape Albeon has been more than a place to call home for Sherry and Dave. Moving to Cape Albeon for Dave was a stepping stone that continued a life full of love. When asked about how he chose Cape Albeon 6 years ago, he fondly remembered that Cape Albeon was bright and cheerful, nice wide hallways and good upkeep...and it ranked higher than the others he considered, the residents seemed very content and the staff was friendly as well. Dave realized it was important to invest himself in his new surroundings and be active in his new home. He served as President for the Resident s Council Board, implementing a new resident photo album and a reception for new residents. He went about his life at Cape Albeon, welcoming new residents, reaching out to others, participating in Songbirds and attending happy hour and other events at Cape Albeon. Meeting Sherry at Cape Albeon s Happy Hour was probably his favorite activity! hey danced. hey dated. Before long they were married. Dave and Sherry were the first couple to be married from Cape Albeon. Sherry became Mrs. Nockels and a resident at Cape Albeon. hey share this story with genuine emotion as they remember the outpouring of love from their Cape Family. Sherry and Dave, with their love of music, stepped in to oversee the Songbirds, a group of 30 to 35 residents that sing a variety of songs (over 150 selections) on Monday afternoons. Sherry is on her fourth year as secretary of the Resident's Council and is also responsible for the Libraries at Cape Albeon. Within the past year, Dave, who just turned 90, was admitted to the hospital Sherry and Dave Nockels enjoy life at Cape Albeon. after a fall and needed rehabilitation for a full recovery. After leaving the hospital, Dave, as a resident of Cape Albeon, was smoothly admitted to the Rehabilitation Unit at Brooking Park. Sherry recalls, Although it was an experience we weren t looking for, it was a good experience. Everyone was fabulous and outstanding as Dave went through therapy. Once again, our Cape Albeon family was there for us. Sherry said, You know you are home when those you live with are concerned and have a real interest or have just missed you. Dave and Sherry are dedicated to their home at Cape Albeon. You can easily find them on the dance floor during happy hour. hey will be the first to introduce themselves and call everyone by name. he camaraderie and fellowship among its residents makes Cape Albeon a great place, expressed Dave. Dave and Sherry are in a great place, both with their relationship and their home. heir love for each other has brought them much joy and happiness. It is their wish that their extended family at Cape Albeon will have the opportunity for the same. After all, we are a family here at Cape Albeon. says Dave. 6 CARING WORKPLACE, INERNAIONALLY AWARD WINNING PROGRAM he Caring Workplace is an internationally award winning program designed to help family caregivers balance their work life and caregiving responsibilities. As our population continues to age, the number of caregivers in the workplace continues to grow. As a result, a large number of individuals struggle with the challenges of working full time to support their families while providing care to an older loved one. Many of these individuals are known as the Sandwich Generation, those who are caring for their children while simultaneously providing care for their aging parents, creating additional struggles. he statistics related to caregivers in the workforce provide a clear picture. 70% of working caregivers made some type of job change to accommodate their role as a caregiver. 12% reduced their hours or took a less demanding job. Almost 10% of caregivers give up work entirely. his is a major issue for businesses, especially smaller companies who may not have adequate staffing to handle absenteeism, and one that must be addressed. Given the prevalence of this issue, and the fact that the number of caregivers in the workforce continues to increase, St. Andrew s Senior Solutions created the Caring Workplace employee benefit program. his service is purchased by corporations and provides their employees access to a Geriatric Care Manager who can help them locate resources, coordinate services, navigate benefits and care choices, and counsel them to help alleviate stress. he Caring Workplace initiated as a grant funded program with a successful model in several St. Louis area businesses. As a benefit package corporations can purchase for their employees, the program currently serves 10 local corporations. Under the new direction of Melissia Robinson, ED, the goal is to grow the program in order to reach an increased number of caregivers in the workplace to help them face their challenges. Heather Spindler, MSW, has been with the program for over 10 years as the primary ElderCare Specialist available to assist corporations in assessing their company s needs, as well as helping the individual employees who receive the benefit. Please check out our newly revised website at to learn more about the services available.
