3 Current Situation of Private Hospitals in Myanmar About 95 private hospitals in Myanmar. About 30 in Yangon and 18 in Mandalay and the rest are scattered in some large cities. About 7 are actually large hospitals with wellequipped facilities like ICU Departments. Most are actually small hospitals with in-patient facility.

9 STRENGTHS Location downtown Easy access by most patients Awards ARH--ISO, Global Compact Superior reputation over many years locally and even abroad Strong number of famous specialists Myanmar culture Patients pursue after famous specialists ICU, CCU, Renal dialysis, Cardiac Cath-lab

10 Strength (cont:) Strong Financing Good management Ethical Committee, CSR committee HSE HSE policy, Fire safety policy Risk management Attractive salary - promotions- yearly bonus Welfare of the staff frequent dinners, staff tea parties

11 WEAKNESS Human Resource huge problem - basic doctors - Specialists - Nurses and Health care assistants (no chance for opening a nursing school) - Med Techs - Others- engineers, IT, finance officers Lack of Residential specialists Consultation time too short

12 Weakness (cont:) Too much congestion of patients especially at busy hours (5pm- 10 pm) Most specialists in-service Government officials Foreigners lack of language interpreters Pharmacy errors specialist s handwriting Multiple drug companies with different trade names FDA approval drugs only More of a specialist-centered hospital rather than patient-centered

13 Weaknesses (cont:) Socio-economy most patients can t afford the private costs Some patients- choose foreign hospitals if the costs are not too high- some compare the service and not the fees Working hours too much? OT problems congestion especially holidays

14 Weaknesses (cont:) Lab investigations overwork and overload at some times No blood bank - Blood Issue section only - have to rely on own donor system and blood donation charity organizations Ambulance service - local, districts, air with or without a medical team 5 ambulance cars Medico-legal cases -instructions not well-defined - limitations

15 Weaknesses (cont:) Traffic congestion Car parking limited Infectious diseases- have to refer to government hospital No MRI, PEP scan No proper e-documentation system - errors No rehabilitation centre No food catering service, no laundry service

16 OPPORTUNITIES Joint ventures Myanmar Investment law Doctor-patient ratio population whole country > 50 million - Yangon 6 million Specialists still limited in patient-specialist ratio

17 Opportunities (cont:) Those who can afford want treatment from private hospitals ( long waiting list at government hospitals and no own choice of specialist) Needs - more specialists - more skilled nurses - more med techs

18 Opportunities (cont:) Most foreign investors are interested but just window-shopping ARH another 100 bedded hospital with car parking space close to AR 1 and AR 2 in the next 2-3 years

19 THREATS Government competition Free investigations and free treatment Medical tourism in other countries- especially in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and India Media tends to exaggerate on medical errors Law suits occasional but tends to be rising Other competitors old and new Political situation - unpredictable New rules and regulations from the government

20 Threats (cont:) Shortage of Human resource Patient s choice Depend on culture and tradition eg. Public opinion - government appointed specialists are the best Rising land and property values Expense of the private hospitals inflation Medical Insurance system government only - not effective yet

21 Threats (cont:) Economy- not so good Some patients - wants 100% cure Some cannot afford, yet came to private hospital and when they can t afford they have to be referred back to government hospital
