2 Register with the Placement and Employment Services (World of Work) and follow us on Social media for the latest student and graduate opportunities UWL students and recent graduates are required to register with the Employment services in order to access job bulletins containing part time and full time job vacancies and search for further opportunities through the online jobs portal. To register, visit and also follow us on and like our Facebook page CHOOSING YOUR CAREER IN HEALTH PROMOTION AND PUBLIC HEALTH Health Promotion and Public Health is a broad based course which can lead to many jobs in the health sector. Consider your interests, knowledge, skills and experience in order to find your ideal job. The following points may help with your career decisionmaking: Health Promotion and Public Health practitioners may specialise in various aspects of a wide range of health related topics. These may include sexual health, mental health, smoking cessation, drug and alcohol misuse and dependence, obesity, promoting healthy eating and active lifestyles, reducing health risks at work and home, exploring health impacts of waste and pollution in the environment, contributing to healthy start programmes in schools, reducing health inequalities, reducing threats of infection (e.g. food poisoning, hospital infections, flu) and helping more people to survive cancer. Health Promotion and Public Health practitioners who have suitable qualifications and experience may enter employment in a diverse range of jobs including educator, lecturer, trainer, advice worker, mentor, coach, counsellor, promoter, carer, fundraiser, administrator, business manager, project manager, quality co-ordinator, statistician, information worker, policy developer and researcher etc. Health Promotion and Public Health Practitioners may work in a range of settings in the public sector, private sector and voluntary sector. Opportunities exist in hospitals, schools, prisons, workplaces, cultural communities, charities and government agencies. Practitioners may choose to work at a local level or develop a more strategic role working with national organisations and government agencies. Useful vacancy sources, and occupational entry requirements, will therefore vary depending on the type and level of employment you seek in Health Promotion and Public Health. When searching for jobs, please check entry requirements carefully to identify any additional job requirements e.g. qualifications in nursing, sport, counselling, social work, statistical/data handling knowledge, research skills, driving license.
3 Employers will often seek relevant experience in addition to a degree or masters qualification in Health Promotion and Public Health. Please make use of opportunities to gain further experience while you study at UWL as advertised by the UWL V Team (open to current students and recent graduates). Further details below. See the UWL Volunteering Service section (below) for further information. If you are unsure about your future career choice, use a wide range of key words in your job search to ensure that you see as many jobs of interest as possible e.g. health promotion, health improvement, health education, health protection, health information, health planning, health management and public health. UWL VOLUNTEERING SERVICE The UWL Volunteering Service will help you to search for suitable voluntary experience within voluntary and charitable organisations. You may also wish to assist with oncampus volunteering projects as a Project Leader. Contact UWL Volunteering via at: thevteam@uwl.ac.uk and visit for more information. Remember that experience working as a volunteer, or managing volunteering projects, will enhance your CV for later job search. Here is a selection of useful websites to get you started with your job search in the Health Promotion and Public Health sector.
