2 INTRODUCTION The future is now For a country like Switzerland, which is lacking in natural resources, innovation is one of the key factors in ensuring economic success. It is therefore important for our country to provide the right conditions for innovation to grow and to keep on developing constantly reinventing itself, as it were. This is how competitiveness is maintained in Switzerland and how financial returns are guaranteed. Only by continuing to lead the way in this regard at international level can our country prevent its resources from migrating elsewhere and thus protect its capacity for innovation. Switzerland s medical technology industry serves as a prime example of innovative strength. The mere fact that around 40% of the product portfolio is less than five years old is more than enough to offer a strong indication of this. Nevertheless, one question remains: what does the industry need to do to ensure that innovations can carry on being successfully launched in future?
