From September 9 to 12, 2014, Nairobi will host East Afripack 2014 a prestigious not-to-miss event dedicated to Processing, Packaging and Converting technology in the EAC area (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda). With a population of 230 million (including the bordering area of Ethiopia 2011 data), EAC is a region with great potential, ready to produce some extremely interesting growth scenarios for companies operating in the industry. The exhibition is the result of an agreement signed in Vienna in July 2012 by UNIDO, Ipack-Ima and EAC to the end of promoting industrial development in the East African Community through processing and packaging technology. A milestone partnership testifying to Ipack-Ima s increasing commitment in promoting these technologies worldwide. To companies supplying technology as well as processing, preservation and packaging systems, East Afripack provides a key opportunity to get in touch with companies seeking technological upgrade in a rapidly expanding region where after-harvest food losses and the safe preservation of both food and non-food products pose a crucial challenge. Processing, packaging and converting suppliers are therefore called to play a primary role in the EAC area, due to the high-quality technology demand. Powered by Ipack-Ima Spa, Italy s leading organizer of international exhibitions in partnership with UN agency UNIDO, the East African Community and Kenya s Ministry of Industrialization and Enterprise Development, East Afripack is designed to become the standard-setting event for the innovation and technological development of SMEs. SMEs face enormous competition for their products and recognize that quality processing and packaging are effective ways to become and remain competitive: this is what emerged from a market research* Ipack-Ima commissioned to UNIDO to the end of designing an event in line with market needs. The study was intended to explore the current state, needs and challenges of the processing and packaging industry in EAC. The research, the first one carried out in tis area, shows a strong and urgent propensity to invest in technology. Technological advancement as a basis for competitive development is perceived as a crucial step to be taken in the short term.
