GENERAL INFORMATION SYLLABUS Course Title : Practice of Fundamentals of Nursing Code and Number : NURS 1112 Credits : 2 credits Academic Term : Professor : Office Hours : Telephone : Electronic Mail : II. DESCRIPTION Application of the nursing process in the care of the adult with common dysfunctions in functional health patterns that support physical functioning. Beginning of the development of clinical skills to perform in the areas of competence as care provider. Requires a total of 90 hours in diverse scenarios. Corequisite NURS III. OBJETIVES 1. Develop clinical skills in order to execute areas of competence in the role of provider of care. 2. Apply the nursing process in the care of the adult with common dysfunctions in the functional health patterns. 3. Provides security to the client, while offering nursing care IV. COMPETENCIES OF THE PROFILE OF THE GRADUATE WHICH SERVES THIS COURSE: 1. Apply critical thinking skills, while providing direct care basic, safe, effective, on time and equitable, to patients/clients when starting the use of the (Nursing Process) for decision-making.

2 2. Offers patients/clients centered care considering their needs, values, preferences, and cultural beliefs. (Humanistic Care) 3. Demonstrates competence in therapeutic interventions based on evidence guided by the faculty of nursing, to offer adult health care for the maintenance and restoration of health in structured scenarios. (Health Disease) 4. Initiates the use of effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills including information technology to support the quality care to patient/client and team. (Communication) 5. Applied evidence-based knowledge to the decision-making process guided by the faculty of nursing to provide patient care/adult client within the context of his family. (Research: Evidence-Based Practice) IV. THEMATIC CONTENT Unit I. Clinical Skills of nursing interventions according to the pattern of functional health. A. Scientific Principles and Skills Development in the Functional Health Patterns 1. Safety a National Patient Safety Goals Metas-Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO) I. Goal I- Improve the accuracy of patient identification. Use at least two ways to identify patients. For example, use the patient s name and date of birth. This is done to make sure that each patient gets the correct medicine and treatment.(npsg ) Make sure that the correct patient gets the correct blood when they get a blood transfusion. (NPSG ) II. Goal 2 - Improve staff communication Get important test results to the right staff person on time. (NPSG ) 2 P age

3 III. Goal 3 - Use medicines safely Before a procedure, label medicines that are not labeled. For example, medicines in syringes, cups and basins. Do this in the area where medicines and supplies are set up. (NPSG ) Take extra care with patients who take medicines to thin their blood. (NPSG ) Record and pass along correct information about a patient s medicines. Find out what medicines the patient is taking. Compare those medicines to new medicines given to the patient. Make sure the patient knows which medicines to take when they are at home. Tell the patient it is important to bring their up-to-date list of medicines every time they visit a doctor. (NPSG ) IV. Goal 6- Use alarms safely Make improvements to ensure that alarms on medical equipment are heard and responded to on time. (NPSG ) V. Goal 7 - Prevent infection Use the hand cleaning guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization. Set goals for improving hand cleaning. Use the goals to improve hand cleaning. NPSG Use proven guidelines to prevent infections that are difficult to treat. NPSG Use proven guidelines to prevent infection of the blood from central lines. 8 IX. SPECIAL NOTES A. Supportive Services or Special Needs Students requiring additional services or special assistance must request these at the beginning of the course or as soon as they learn that they need them, through the appropriate4 register in the office of M. Jose Rodrigues, at the University Orientation Program located at the first floor of Harris Building. B. Honesty, Fraud, and Plagiarism The lack of honesty, fraud, plagiarism, and any other inadequate behavior in relation to academic work constitutes major infractions sanctioned by General Student Regulations. Major infractions, according to General Student Regulation, may result in suspension from the University for a definite period of time greater than one year or the permanent expulsion from the University, among other sanctions. C. Use of electronic devices: Cellular (mobile) telephones, IPODS, and any other electronic device that could interrupt the teaching-learning process or disrupt a milieu favorable for academic excellence will be deactivated. Critical situations will be dealt with in an appropriate manner. The use of electronic devices that permit accessing, storing or sending data during tests or examinations is prohibited. D. Special Requirements of Practice and Internship Centers Some academic programs of the University require students to complete a practice or internship in a real work scenario as part of the degree requirements. These external centers may be state and federal agencies, hospitals, and nongovernmental organizations, among others. It is the student s responsibility to comply with the external practice center, these requirements may be doping tests, HIV tests, an immunization certificate against hepatitis, a health certificate, a negative criminal record, or any other requirement that the institution or practice center may stipulate. If students refuse or are not able to meet any of the requirements, they will be unable to complete their practice or internship and, therefore will not pass the practice or internship course or meet the graduation requirements of their academic program. E. Clinical practice in diverse scenarios This course considers clinical practice in diverse scenarios such as hospitals, diagnostic and treatment centers (CDT), elderly care centers, extended care centers, and simulation laboratories, among others. There is a minimum of an 8 weeks period at the school laboratory to acquire skills before going to the clinical scenario. In the event of the occurrence of special situations which would be beyond the control of the School of Nursing an alternate plan would be considered. RESOURCES Textbooks: Craven, R. (2013).
