4 INSIGHT: TRAINING AND EDUCATION UNIT Semester 1 Calendar Welcome to Insight s Training Calendar for Semester 1, Insight is a leading provider of alcohol and other drug training, education, information and advice for workers and services across Queensland. We provide progressive learning opportunities ranging from introductory level through to specialised discipline-specific professional development courses. We are committed to providing best practice evidence based clinical training and support for the state s alcohol and drug workforce and related sectors. We look forward to seeing you at one of our events! CONTACT DETAILS AND ENQUIRIES For information on any of the services offered by Insight, or to place your name on our mailing list please visit phone: (07) or insight@health.qld.gov.au WORKSHOP INFORMATION Workshop Bookings All bookings are managed online through our Eventbrite Calendar which can be accessed via our Training page on Bookings are essential. To secure your place, please complete the online booking expression of interest form that corresponds to the event/s that you wish to attend. Please note that submitting a booking request does not guarantee you a place in the training. Participants must wait to receive a booking confirmation notice before they can be assured of their successful registration. Early registration is recommended as workshop places are limited. Waiting lists will be maintained for events that book out early. The final date for accepting applications is two weeks before the scheduled course date unless otherwise notified. Queensland based workers from the alcohol and drug services will be given priority access to training spaces, followed by mental health, hospital, community health and other non-government community services sectors employees. For accountability purposes all registrants must provide the name and contact details of their line manager so that a copy of the booking confirmation notice can be provided to them upon acceptance. For more information about our training courses visit Fees for training There is no charge to attend Insight training workshops for either Queensland Health or non-queensland Health employees. Restrictions apply on the number of registrations accepted from a single organisation for each event, managed on a case-by-case basis. CPD points Participants attending Insight workshops are able to gain CPD points. See individual core skills training workshop for PD endorsement. Venues and catering Unless otherwise specified, all training events are held in the Edwards Miller Training Room, 4th Floor Biala, 270 Roma Street, Brisbane. Tea, coffee and a light lunch will be provided at full-day workshops. Cancellation policy Applicants will be notified by if courses are cancelled. If you are unable to attend a workshop, please notify Insight on (07) or at insight@health.qld.gov.au as soon as possible, prior to the workshop date. Certificates and course competency All participants attending Insight workshops will receive certificates to acknowledge their attendance. Participants will be required to meet core skills requirements to obtain a Certificate of Course Competency for Core Skills workshops. 5 SEMESTER TRAINING STAFF Margaret Ness Margaret is a Psychologist and the Senior Clinical Education Coordinator at Insight. Her 20 year experience in the AOD field spans both government and non-government sectors, across both research and clinical arenas in the capacity of a psychologist and also as a registered nurse. Jeff Buckley Jeff is the Director of Statewide Clinical Support Services. He is a Social Worker with 15 years experience across government and non-government settings in alcohol and drug treatment, youth homelessness, youth justice and community development practice. Jeff has also worked in private consulting and University teaching roles. Cameron Francis Cameron is a Social Worker who has worked in various roles across non-government and government agencies, including outreach, peer education, NSP and as an individual counsellor for young people. In his current role with Dovetail, Cameron provides support and assistance to front line youth AOD services throughout Queensland. Leigh Beresford Leigh is the clinical nurse on the Dovetail project team. Leigh brings a wide range of experience to the team from general, midwifery and drug and alcohol nursing. Kim Sander Kim Sander is the Director of Allied Health Services for MNMH-ADS as well as is the Social Work Professional Lead for Metro North Mental Health. Kim has worked in the field of mental health and alcohol and other drugs for the past 20 years. During this time she has collaborated in the development of treatment programs for young people and families, as well as initiated projects to enhance services within the AOD treatment sector. John Kelly John is a Psychologist and the Allied Health Manager of the Biala and Youth Allied Health Service. He has 15 years experience in the alcohol and other drug sector, through engaging in clinical work, research, training and program development. John has particular interests in interventions with young people, working with trauma, individual and group interventions for alcohol and other drug use as well as the use of ACT therapies. Ali Palmer Ali Palmer is Social Worker Advanced in Redcliffe Caboolture Alcohol and Drug Service MNMH-ADS as well as the Social Work Professional Leader for Social Work Redcliffe Caboolture Mental Health and Alcohol and Drug Service. Ali has worked in the fields of alcohol and drug, child and youth mental health and non-government mental health sector for the past 16 years. Ali is passionate about narrative therapy, consumer and carer participation and family sensitive practice. Fiona English Fiona is a social worker with over 20 years experience working in health care teams, including mental health, drug and alcohol, acute, sub-acute and community models. Her commitment to working with families has been strengthened by undertaking further training in family therapy, especially from a systemic perspective. Consultation Liaison Team Benny Pope, Boyd Roach and Catherine Webster are Clinical Nurse Consultants working at The Prince Charles Hospital, Caboolture Hospital, Kilcoy and Redcliffe Hospitals. Collectively they have a wealth of experience working in medical, surgical, obstetric and mental health nursing. Within the AOD sector their experience includes withdrawal management, opioid replacement therapy and consultation liaison. Catherine brings with her special interest and knowledge of obstetrics and child health. Their current roles are supported by Clinical Nurses, Majella Walsh-Chandran and Carmel Thorburn. Page 5 of 14
6 INSIGHT S ONLINE INDUCTION MODULES Insight has developed a series of online modules to provide health workers with knowledge based material to facilitate induction to the AOD field. All modules are in PDF format, with file sizes indicated. The following modules are available online at: Induction Module 1: Big Picture Alcohol and Other Drugs Induction Module 2: Understanding Psychoactive Drugs Induction Module 3: Micro-counselling Skills Induction Module 4: AOD Clinical Assessment Induction Module 5: Motivational Interviewing Induction Module 6: Relapse Prevention and Management A Certificate of Completion will be given following submission of the short multiple choice assessment found at the end of each module. Note: Completion of the online Induction material is a prerequisite for the core skills training workshops offered by Insight. Please see workshop outlines for each workshop prerequisites. Each module provides 3 hours of active learning ADS STAFF ORIENTATION PROGRAMME Staff Orientation Programme Tuesday 1 st March am 1.00pm The ADS staff orientation programme provides new staff to Metro North Mental Health - Alcohol and Drug Service with an agency orientation and overview of the service. New staff working in other services within Queensland Health are also welcome to attend. Page 6 of 14
7 Understanding Psychoactive Drugs Tuesday 22 nd March 2016 CORE SKILLS TRAINING This workshop is designed for those wanting to gain a basic understanding of what psychoactive drugs are and the various licit and illicit substances used in Australia today. The workshop will also cover: classification and effects of psychoactive drugs substance dependence patterns of use and harms from substance use basic neurobiology intoxication and overdose tolerance and withdrawal pharmacotherapies currently available street names for commonly used drugs. Prerequisite: Online Induction Material Module 2 Certificate of Course Competency will be issued if core skill requirements are met. This Course provides 6 hours of active learning AOD Clinical Assessment Thursday 7 th April 2016 This interactive workshop will introduce participants to clinical assessment for alcohol and other drug problems. It will include: raising the issue of alcohol and other drug use with clients screening instruments assessment instruments biopsychosocial elements of assessment situational alcohol and other drug risks practical skill development exercises. Prerequisite: Online Induction Material Module 4 Certificate of Course competency will be issued if core skill requirements are met This Course provides 6 hours of active learning Page 7 of 14
8 CORE SKILLS TRAINING Introduction to Motivational Interviewing for Drug Use Thursday 21 st April 2016 This is a workshop for those wanting to develop core skills in managing clients who are ambivalent about making change to their drug use. The interactive skills based workshop will cover: an overview of the Stages of Change model motivational interviewing principles and processes basic micro-counselling skills brief motivational assessment motivational interviewing strategies practical skills development. Prerequisite: Online Induction Material Module 5 Certificate of Course competency will be issued if core skill requirements are met This Course provides 6 hours of active learning AOD Relapse Prevention and Management Tuesday 3 rd May 2016 Many clients experience difficulty maintaining their drug use goals. This workshop will provide practical and positive strategies to assist clients in preventing and managing relapses to drug use. Areas covered will include: precursors of relapse the Resolution Breakdown model identifying high risk situations for substance use relapse prevention and management interventions practical skill development exercises. Prerequisite: Online Induction Material Module 6 Certificate of Course competency will be issued if core skill requirements are met learning This Course provides 6 hours of active Page 8 of 14
9 SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING Social Workers Engaging with Clients for The Purpose of Child Safety Assessment Thursday 10 th March 2016 This workshop will highlight the changes occurring in the child protection system as a result of amendments to the Child Protection Act 1999 which took effect in January The workshop is primarily for Mental Health/Alcohol and Drug Service Social Workers to discuss these changes and inform them of what this means for their clinical practice. However, no disciplines will be excluded if they are interested in attending the workshop. Please note that this training will be offered at other Metro North sites throughout The following topics will be included: Core Skills in Child Protection assessment and family engagement including: o Assessing the risk and protective factors o Child Protection Frameworks for practice Duty of care: New reporting process Statutory role/ threshold for reporting Secondary referral options o Local Brisbane North FACC services. Presenters: Hanna Lace, Child protection Liaison Officer, Child Protection Unit & Sexual Assault Service RBWH Renae Majcen, Team Leader, Social Worker Advanced Conducting Effective Group Work with AOD Patients Tuesday 15 March 2016 Many therapeutic programs are created for a group therapy context and represent a viable and cost effective solution to providing therapy. This workshop will centre on the best practice principles that enable groups to reach their potential. This one day workshop will include the following topics: principles and processes in group facilitation how to determine the best structure for the delivery of group therapy effective leadership within the group context practical skills development Presented by: John Kelly, Allied Health Manager/Psychologist, MNMH-ADS Margaret Ness, Senior Clinical Education Coordinator, MNMH-ADS Page 9 of 14
10 Young People and Drugs (Y-PAD) Dovetail SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING Tuesday 12 th April 2016 This full-day workshop targets practitioners who work directly with young people aged years in a oneon-one capacity. For example, youth workers, alcohol and drug workers / clinicians, child safety officers, youth justice officers, residential support workers, youth support coordinators, school-based youth health nurses, indigenous health workers, mental health professionals, guidance officers, employment and vocational staff and other similar professionals are likely to benefit most from the course's content. The training provides an overview of youth alcohol and other drug (AOD) use including: A framework for Youth AOD Practice History, context and background to AOD policy in Australia Stats, figures and current trends in youth AOD use Understanding youth AOD use Risk vs Protective Factors Engagement and Assessment The Transtheoretical Model (Stages of Change) Motivational Interviewing Brief Intervention Practical hints, tips and tricks for working with young people with AOD issues. Presenters: Cameron Francis, Social Worker, and Leigh Beresford, Clinical Nurse, Dovetail, MNMH-ADS Adolescent Cannabis Check Up (ACCU) Thursday 28 th April am 1.00pm This interactive workshop is suitable for anyone who works with clients who use cannabis and need a structured intervention. The intervention is comprised of an individual assessment session followed by a personalised feedback session delivered in motivational interviewing style. An optional skills based session is offered in relation to behaviour change. Participants will be taken through the intervention and familiarised with the material. This training aims to: Enable participants to implement an evidence-based motivational enhancement intervention with their own clients. This workshop is most suitable for workers who either work opportunistically or who choose to provide a brief intervention. This intervention is for cannabis users irrespective of their treatment seeking status. Please note: Participants will be asked to participate in a 3 month follow up. Maximum of 15 participants per workshop with the prerequisite of a good understanding of Motivational Enhancement theory. 11 SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING Crystal Clear: How to Respond Effectively to Methamphetamine Use Thursday 5 th May 2016 This workshop will assist health workers understand and respond to the specific needs of methamphetamine using clients who present to treatment services..a range of topics will be covered and include: Overview of amphetamines: What they are and how they affect the body (human brain) Harms and risks associated with methamphetamine use Acute care strategies for frontline health workers Psychosocial treatment and brief intervention Skills practice Presenters: Jeff Buckley, Director - Statewide Clinical Support Services, MNMH-ADS, Margaret Ness, Senior Clinical Training Coordinator, MNMH-ADS *This workshop is part of the Queensland Government s response to ice crystal methamphetamine. Introductory Consultation and Liaison Training Day for Nurses Thursday 12 th May 2016 Alcohol and Drug Consultation Liaison services (CL) are implemented in a hospital setting to provide direct access to specialist services for support, treatment, advice and assistance with the clinical management of alcohol and drug related issues and co-morbidities. This training day consists of two sections: Defining the role of the CL Nurse o Advocating for the patient o Communicating skills o Understanding and conveying best treatments o Education for staff and patients o Interpreting blood tests Clinical Knowledge (using case study format ) o Alcohol and Benzodiazepines: How much is too much? Wernicke s, DTs, hallucinations, seizures o Cannabis: Withdrawals o Amphetamines: Intoxication and withdrawals o Opiates: Opioid Replacement Therapy, pain issues and ORT, organ failure, dependence o Tobacco: best practice in an in-patient setting o Maternity and AOD Facilitator: Nurse Educator, MNMH-ADS Page 11 of 14
12 Quitting Cannabis 1-6 Sessions Tuesday 24 th May 2016 SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING This workshop is specifically designed for clinicians who treat people with cannabis use problems. It covers a comprehensive, evidence-based intervention which the clinician may deliver over 1 6 sessions. Some strategies used in the intervention consist of: behavioural self-monitoring withdrawal symptom management mastery of urges and cravings relapse prevention. The intervention is supported by material which will be demonstrated and provided to participants. Please note: Participants will be asked to participate in a 3 month follow up. Maximum of 15 participants per workshop with the prerequisite of a thorough knowledge of Motivational Interviewing and CBT. Presenter: Margaret Ness, Senior Clinical Training Coordinator, MNMH-ADS Engaging with Significant Others and Families to Enhance AOD Treatment Outcomes Thursday 2 nd June 2016 Evidence supports the notion that treatment outcomes can be enhanced for clients attending AOD Service when family members and concerned significant others are involved at various points during the treatment process. In line with recommendations from the National Drug Strategy , this workshop will focus on enhancing the knowledge and skills of clinicians working with the significant others, carers and families of clients with alcohol and other drug problems. Theories and interventions from Family Sensitive frameworks will be explored and discussed. Topics covered will include: Benefits of family inclusive practice for the client and their family/carer networks What Significant Others and Families can bring to AOD treatment interventions Barriers and myths around working with significant others and families in AOD services. Strategies to overcome barriers to engaging Significant Others and Families in treatment Exploring implementation of family sensitive practice into the workplace within a practice framework. 13 SPECIALISED AOD TRAINING Introductory Course for Nurses: Managing Withdrawal Thursday 9th Friday 10th June 2016 Please note course prerequisite: Participants must hold current nursing registration with AHPRA. This course is offered to registered nurses across Queensland. The aim of the course is to develop knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of alcohol and drug misuse. The course combines structured theoretical and clinical experiences. All presentations are delivered by experienced practitioners. The clinical practicum component will be supervised by experienced practitioners also. A sample of areas covered during the course includes: Queensland detoxification and alcohol withdrawal clinical practice guidelines for ambulatory and inpatient detoxification. Assessment, management and treatment of major drug classifications including alcohol, tobacco, benzodiazepines, opioids, psychostimulants, volatile substances and cannabis. Practicum in a Qld Health detoxification facility. Facilitator: Nurse Educator, MNMH-ADS NB: Your travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of you and/or your employer. Your service is responsible for any staff replacements or backfilling costs while you are attending the course. Page 13 of 14
