This study is a collective analysis of data obtained from the Korean Nursing Association, the nursing societies of hospitals, the graduates hospital of employment regarding basic nursing practices, and the graduates academic records, for the identification of key nursing skills necessary for nursing college graduates and to evaluate its importance and perception. A survey was conducted on the entire 43 graduating 4th-year students of K Nursing College in the city of D and on 150 nurses at the K University Hospital from September 20, 2010 to November 30, Based on the literature and materials of study results, a of 8 key nursing skills were identified: 1) vital signs, 2) intravenous injection, 3) intramuscular injection, 4) urethral catheterization, 5) aspiration nursing, 6) oxygen therapy, 7) enema, 8) gavage. Key words: Nursing Student, Nursing Competency, Education 1 Introduction The key competencies of new nurses were defined by the Korean Nursing Education Evaluation as the necessary knowledge, decision-making, skills, or even the strength required to perform an activity or task by a new nurse employed at a medical institution after the process of graduating from a nursing college and having attained a nursing license (Ko et al., 2013). The defining of the key competency of nursing graduates could become a measure for an evaluation of the educational department and a factor of external competition, so in order to strengthen the key skills that integrate knowledge, skills, and attitude, a systematic development of the educational curriculum is needed, which shall be applicable in both national and foreign institutions. Following, to improve the clinical practice adaptability of graduates and to train field-experts fit for working for on-site care, it is expected that key competency enforcement programs for the improving of clinical practice skill will be developed. In this study, for the development of a custom key nursing skill set for nursing graduates, a collective analysis of data obtained from the Korean Nursing Association, the nursing societies of hospitals, the graduates hospital of employment regarding basic nursing practices, and the graduates academic records, for the defining of key nursing skills. Following, the needs for hands-on training and the importance of key nursing skills for nursing college graduates and hospital nurses were recognized for establishment. 2 2 Method 2.1 Study design This study is a methodological research for the identification of key nursing skill abilities and its importance to be fostered by nursing college graduates for nursing education. 2.2 Sampling and data collection Data and materials obtained from the Korean Nursing Association, the nursing societies of hospitals, the graduates hospital of employment regarding basic nursing practices, and the graduates academic records were analyzed, and a survey was conducted on the entire 43 graduating 4th-year nursing students of K Nursing College in the city of D and on 150 nurses, excluding newly employed nurses, at the K University Hospital from September 20, 2010 to November 30, Data analysis A content analysis of literature was done to define the key nursing skill set expected from a nursing college graduate, and the mean and standard deviation was used to evaluate the demand for hands-on training and the importance of nursing skills for the 4th-year nursing students and the hospital nurses. 3 Results The most common types of practices or skills carried out by the nursing students at the university were found to be vital sign, nutrition (gavage), personal hygiene, bowel movement (enema, colostomy nursing), urination (artificial catheter). The most common skills for academic materials were vital sign, physical examination, oxygen therapy, aspiration nursing, and CPCR. For the Korean Nursing Association data, the skills identified through the hospital nursing society s new nurse educational checklist were vital sign, injection (oral medication, intravenous injection), oxygen therapy (nasal cannula, oxygen mask), aspiration nursing, and the skills from the general hospital documents were vital sign, hygiene care, and oral medication. On other related studies, Byun et al. (2003) found that high incidence of skill sets used in the study were blood transfusion, intravenous injection, oral medication, surgery, and infection control, and Han (2007) found that the skills demanding frequent practical training were circulatory machines, Copyright 2015 SERSC 13

3 operational nursing, water-electrolysis, and medication administration. The comparative analysis and survey results of the skill set training needs of nursing students are as follows (Table 1, 2).
