Both campuses have recycling centres and we also provide recycling facilities in all halls of residence to enable students to recycle paper, cans, glass, cardboard and packaging.

12 Residents Handbook 2014/ Help the College to continue to reduce our carbon footprint by: Switching off lights when they are not in use Turn off the heating before opening the window Not leaving electrical equipment on overnight We are continuously trying to improve our environmental performance and if you have any suggestions or comments that could help us please contact the Accommodation Office. FIRE PRECAUTIONS You are expected to comply with the fire precautions at all times and should familiarise yourself with fire alarm break glass switches, emergency routes and the location of fire fighting equipment in the hall. Fire drills are held each term. Wilful failure to participate in these practices is viewed as a serious matter and treated as misconduct. The removal of, or tampering with, the fire fighting equipment, fire/smoke detection, installations, fire closures or the misuse of any other devices installed to provide protection against fire are criminal offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order Particular care is necessary in residences: Corridors, staircases and other open areas must NOT be obstructed by furniture or other items, such as bicycles. These will be removed and persistent breaches may result in disciplinary actions being invoked. Fire doors must not be wedged open or a fine may be issued As the heat and smoke sensors are sensitive, they are easily triggered. For this reason cookers and grills must NOT be left unattended, kitchen doors must be kept shut at all times and candles/joss sticks must not be used in halls. Even accidental initiation of an alarm requires the building to be evacuated and the Fire Service called. The costs incurred in handling careless or malicious false alarms will be charged to the person(s) responsible.

13 14 GYM MEMBERSHIP College students will have full membership to the Gym on the main College campus. This will be valid from 1st October through to the 31st May and will include a gym induction. HEALTH AND SAFETY In the interest of your own and other students safety you are not allowed to burn candles or store any flammable liquids such as kerosene, lighter fuel, petrol, BBQ lighting fluid, mentholated spirit, paraffin etc. in the student residences. (This is not an exhaustive list and refers to any substance with flammable properties.) For this reason we insist that aerosol products are kept to a minimum and away from heat sources. Please note that the storage of offensive weapons/objects that can endanger a persons health and safety will not be permitted. If found, these items will be held until the end of the licence agreement. HOLIDAY PERIODS The Halls are open through all the holiday periods. HOMESICKNESS Many students suffer from homesickness at some point when at College. For the majority of students this passes very quickly when they make new friends and find their feet on their course. It is important to remember that studying at College is not a period of isolation. Living in halls often teaches students how to live away from home for the first time. You may learn much more than you had originally thought you would! You will discover how to manage your money and laundry, whilst interacting with a community of people from a variety of backgrounds. It is important to remember that everyone is in the same situation and however daunting it may seem, in a few short weeks after arrival you will have made friends with people who may be in your life longer than the duration of your course. If you are struggling with being away from family and friends please talk to someone, for example the Halls Supervisors or staff from the Accommodation Office.

15 PLEASE READ CAREFULLY If your room / area fails to meet the required standard, the following will be applied: A white warning checklist, to give the residents of the flat an opportunity to resolve any areas highlighted in the boxes provided without charge This is an example of a supervisors notification slip. If any of the boxes are ticked then the items listed beside the box failed inspection and needs to be resolved. You may be given a date in the re-inspection box. If you do then you have to have the matters listed resolved by the date and you will be charged a fee for the re-inspection. If your room is re-inspected you will be charged If your communal area is re-inspected you will be charged but the amount will be divided equally between the residents of that block. If N/A is in the re-inspection box then you will need to address the issues ticked but you will not have a re-inspection and therefore you will not be charged. This is an example of a supervisors warning. Here are a few reasons why you would receive a warning: Your room / area was in a very unhygienic state The same issues kept happening on each visit A serious issue was found eg: fire door left open You did not heed your notification slip If you receive a warning you will have boxes ticked with a description of the issue listed to the side. These issues will need resolving by the date and time given at the top of the warning. You will be charged a revisit fee of for your room but if it is for a communal area you will be charged and it will be equally divided between the residents of that block. If the matters are resolved in the given time the resolved box will be ticked. If the matters are not resolved by the time/date stated then the charged box will be ticked and a day box will be ticked for the day the contractors will be instructed to clean the room/area. You will not be notified via of the warnings and charges. Please refer to your handbook for charges. Three warnings in a term will result with you receiving a formal disciplinary. It is up to the supervisors discretion if you will require a revisit and the decision will be made dependant on how important the failings are. The time given to resolve the issues will be dependant on the importance of the failings and the time the supervisor thinks you will need or should complete the task. This may also be decided on students availability to carry out the tasks.
