This holiday season, we wanted to share with you a story that demonstrates just how powerful words can be. The new year is a great time to remember, you never know what state of mind someone is in at any time and how your words may impact them. A blind man was sitting on a busy sidewalk holding a tin can for donations and a cardboard sign that read, I am blind. As the crowds of people rushed by he could tell by the sound of the coins that very few people were stopping to make donations. As the day wore on, he heard the clickity clack of a woman s heels as she approached. She quietly stopped and, without a word, picked up the sign and wrote something on it and then went on her way. Suddenly people began to steadily drop money into the man s can. Later in the day he heard the familiar clickity clack of the woman s heels and, as she approached him, the blind man said, Excuse me miss- may I ask what you did to my sign? Her response was, I flipped over your sign, and wrote on the other side "It is a beautiful day, and I cannot see it." Submitted by: Carol Cox

This three-year designation exemplifies the quality of care and commitment provided to patients by the dedicated staff in the Surgical ICU at this Level I trauma center. UC Irvine s Surgical ICU is the receiving unit for traumas, open heart surgeries, transplants, and numerous other high-risk surgical patients. Members of the unit-based practice council were inspired to apply for the Beacon Award while at AACN s National Teaching Institute (NTI) annual convention in Boston. The unit s accomplishment was recently celebrated at the NTI convention in San Diego in May of this year. The application focuses primarily on these five categories: leadership structures and systems; appropriate staffing and staff engagement; effective communication, knowledge management, learning and development; evidencebased practice and processes; and outcome measurement. The Surgical ICU at UC Irvine Health is honored to have achieved high enough scores in all categories to earn the coveted Gold Beacon Award. Submitted by: Angela D.
