6 Accreditation The Big Bend Community College Nursing Program is accredited by the Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission, the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges, and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. NE, Suite 500, Atlanta GA Program Options The Big Bend Community College Nursing Program provides an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing. This 6-quarter curriculum (after acceptance to the program) will allow the graduate to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN); successful completion of the exam permits licensure as a Registered Nurse. Students who plan to pursue advanced education in nursing are encouraged to seek an Associate Degree in Arts and Sciences. Your advisor can help you plan your courses. Please read and follow all directions carefully! Incomplete applications will delay and/or prevent acceptance into the nursing program. NOTE: Nursing classes begin Fall Quarter each year. Application guidelines: Applications will be accepted March 15th Applications must be received in the registrar s office by close of business (2:30 p.m.) April 5th, 2019 Acceptance letters will be mailed (or ed) by May 1st, 2019 Application Requirements: o Apply for admission to Big Bend Community College. You may apply online at or through the Registration office. Application and admission to BBCC is necessary for your transcripts to be evaluated. Acceptance to BBCC does not guarantee acceptance to the nursing program. The application is not complete until the fee is paid. o Fill out the Nursing Program Application. The application is available on the nursing program website. o Attach official transcripts from colleges other than BBCC to your application. You do not need to submit transcripts for Big Bend courses. If you have co-requisite courses in progress at another college, please submit documentation with your application. o Attach a current copy of your Washington State Certified Nurse Assistant License (NA-C is required: no substitutions such as Medical Assistant Certified) to begin the nursing program. If you do not have your license at the time of application, please be sure to indicate when you expect to meet this requirement. Schedule your TEAS Sixth Edition assessment test. Please verify the TEAS assessment test version before you test at another test site. If test is taken somewhere other than the BBCC campus, TEAS assessment test results must be electronically sent from ATI testing directly to the Big Bend CC Nursing Program. Please see the information on TEAS assessment testing in this packet and on our website. 7 Course Prerequisites and Co-requisites 1. All pre- and co-requisite courses must be completed with a minimum grade of 2.0 (C) or better 2. Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology courses must have been taken within the past seven years to be considered 3. 8 Program Selection Process Applications are evaluated using a scoring system based on GPA (for pre- and co-requisite courses), completion of co-requisite courses, scores on the TEAS assessment test, related healthcare work experience, and Washington State NA-C licensure (no substitutions such as MA-C). A copy of the evaluation form is included in this packet for your information only: the scoring will be done by campus personnel. The highest scoring applicants will be admitted. Qualified applicants not admitted will be placed in an alternate pool and will be notified if an opening becomes available prior to orientation in September. Once orientation begins, the alternate pool will end, and interested applicants will need to submit a new application for the following year. After acceptance, the student will be expected to: o Pay a $250 deposit by the deadline in your acceptance letter. This deposit pays for background checks, initial costs for ATI testing, and drug screening o Participate in a mandatory three day orientation the first week of September. o Provide documentation of required immunizations and current Healthcare Provider CPR or BLS training. o Undergo a comprehensive background check o Provide verification of personal accident insurance. Students may purchase insurance through Big Bend CC or provide proof of other insurance o Purchase annual liability insurance (will be included in your tuition and fees) PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT THESE ITEMS WITH YOUR APPLICATION! 9 Additional Nursing Program Information Frequently Asked Questions Is there financial aid available for nursing students? Nursing Scholarships available through the BBCC Foundation at : Students applying for the nursing program may apply from October through February 1 for consideration. Recent employment or volunteer experience which includes direct patient care and communication skills (Nurse Assistant Certified, volunteer in a hospital or nursing home, etc.) What s TEAS assessment testing all about? The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a computer based tool to assess the academic preparedness of entry level nursing students and to identify those who may need additional support to meet the academic demands of the program. TEAS provides a measurement of the prospective nursing student s basic cognitive skills in the areas of Reading, Math, Science, & English. Test questions will range from basic grade school to college. There is a study guide available for the TEAS Sixth Edition assessment test at the bookstore, and more detailed information is available on our program website. How can I take the TEAS Sixth Edition Assessment Test? Appointments can be made with the testing center on the Big Bend Campus. Contact Margie Lane at for more information on cost or to schedule an appointment. If you do not live in our area, you may contact to find a local testing site. Results must be submitted electronically to the BBCC nursing program directly from ATI testing. Our clinical sites require that all students provide documentation of immunity to Hepatitis B, Varicella (chicken pox), and MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella). That immunity can be demonstrated either by immunization series or by a blood test. Students must provide documentation of a current Tdap immunization. In addition, students will need to have a Two Step TB test followed by an annual test each year they are in the program. The specific requirements will be mailed to accepted students early in the summer to allow time to meet this requirement. Immunization requirements do change from time to time, and we may need to adjust to these expectations.

10 What kind of skills will be expected of me as a nursing student? Students planning to enter the nursing program need to be aware that the requirements listed below are expected by employers. Therefore, students will be expected to meet the same criteria during clinical and skills lab instruction in the nursing program. - Demonstrate good body mechanics and the ability to lift/carry a minimum of 25 lbs. independently and 50 lbs. with assistance. - Have normal/corrected vision and hearing within normal range. - Demonstrate ability to tolerate intermittent sitting, standing, stooping and walking. Full range of motion is required. - Demonstrate good manual and finger dexterity. - Demonstrate ability to differentiate odors and colors in the clinical setting. - Demonstrate effective communication skills: Must be able to read and write in English. Must be able to communicate verbally in English both in person and on the phone. - Demonstrate ability to stand on carpeting, linoleum, or be seated at a standard desk at the nurse s station using an office chair for a varying amount of time (i.e. 2-4 hours). - Demonstrate ability to work in fast-paced facilities that includes dealing effectively with stress. - Demonstrate emotional stability and maturity in interactions with staff, patients, and visitors. - Demonstrate ability to deliver safe and competent nursing care across the age spectrum with cultural and ethnic sensitivity.
