1 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN NURSING When are applications to the college due? Clarkesville: On or before 5:00 p.m. on April 1 st Blairsville: On or before 5:00 p.m. on September 1st Please note: Interested applicants must enroll in NGTC prior to applying for candidacy into the ASN Program. Interested applicants who have not been a student at within the last year must submit a North Georgia Technical College Application and required documents (transcripts and test scores) for admission. NGTC Applications should be mailed to: Attn: Admissions Department P.O. Box 5, Clarkesville, GA Intent Forms and NGTC Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. Box 5, Clarkesville, GA, When will the program start? Clarkesville: Fall semester Blairsville: Spring semester What degree will be issued upon completion of the program? Graduates will be issued the Associate in Science Degree in Nursing and will be eligible to apply to take the Georgia Board of Nursing RN licensure exam. Where will I find jobs when I complete the program? Registered Nursing is projected to be one of two occupations with the highest growth rate in Georgia and among occupations with the most annual openings in metro Atlanta and North Georgia (GA DOL Projections to 2018). RNs are employed in hospitals, long-term care, rehabilitation centers, home care, inpatient and outpatient hospice, correctional facilities, outpatient clinics, physician s offices, school nursing, health education, mental health facilities, camp nurses, public health, insurance industry, regulatory services, health informatics and many others. NGTC provides placement counseling services through Student Affairs. How many students will be admitted? Clarkesville: 30 students Blairsville: 20 students Admission to the nursing program is competitive. The number of students is limited by the number of faculty and clinical facilities available.
2 What is the competitive process? Meeting minimum admissions standards does not guarantee acceptance. Applicant s scores on the HESI and GPA based on required core courses will be ranked from the highest to the lowest. Students with the highest combined scores will be admitted based on available seats in the cohort. In the event that it becomes necessary to break a tie, the following criteria will be considered: Employment experience in a healthcare field Completion of educational degree (associates, bachelors, masters) Completion of additional courses required for graduation from ASN program but not included in core curriculum (PSYC 1101, PSYC 2103, ENGL 1102 and one humanities course such as ARTS 1101, ENGL 2130 or MUSC What must I have completed to be eligible for the competitive admission process for the RN program? 1. Acceptance to. 2. Completed ASN Intent Form submitted by the deadline (Clarkesville April 1 st, Blairsville September 1 st ). Official copies of all transcripts must be submitted with application to the college. Recent transcripts for all required coursework must be submitted to NGTC by (Clarkesville May 15 th, Blairsville September 15 th ) for completion of competitive admissions process. 3. Completion of required core courses. The required core courses are outlined in the Catalog/Student Handbook. The list can also be found in this Frequently Asked Questions document. A minimum 3.0 GPA must be achieved for required core courses (=average of final grades for the required core). GPA calculations are based on the most recent attempt of credit hours for the required core courses.. Completion of the HESI Admission Assessment (A2) Exam is required. HESI Exam must be completed by April 1 st for Clarkesville and September 1 st for Blairsville. If the HESI is taken at another test site, an official copy of the results must be submitted by the (Clarkesville, April 1 st, Blairsville, September 1) deadline. Have HESI them to frearden@northgatech.edu. Only the first two attempts on the HESI Assessment Exam (within the 12 month period prior to the intent form due date) will be considered in the competitive process. HESI Admission Assessment Exam (A2) Students interested in being considered for entrance to the Associate in Science Degree in Nursing program at North Georgia Technical College are required to complete the HESI (Health Education Systems, Inc.) Assessment Exam (A2). The HESI exam evaluates performance in critical thinking, math, English, and anatomy and physiology. The cost of the exam is $5.00. A review guide for the HESI Assessment Exam (A2) is available online. A limited number of study guides are available in the NGTC library. The Admission Assessment Exam Review, 3 rd Edition ISBN HESI Exam dates are published on the NGTC website under Continuing Education. To register for the exam, call the Clarkesville testing office at or lfoster@northgatech.edu or contact the Blairsville testing office at The ASN HESI Exam is administered on both the Clarkesville and Blairsville Campuses. Can I still work while I am in the ASN program? Students are strongly discouraged from working while they are enrolled in the ASN program due to the heavy academic load. Work hours and childcare needs must be scheduled around the program class times. How long does it take to complete the program? Nursing courses require 5 semesters to complete. Core requirements vary according to credit load and individual student flexibility in scheduling. Can my prior college coursework be applied to the program? Official college transcripts will be reviewed by the Registrar s Office per the official transfer credit rules and course validity periods outlined in the Transfer Admission section of North Georgia Technical College Catalog, which is available at Only the Registrar s office may approve transferred courses for credit. May I transfer nursing courses? Only core courses are accepted for transfer. Nursing courses may not be transferred.
3 Are ASN classes offered in the evening or online? The ASN program curriculum (RNSG courses) will be offered during the day. However, there may be some clinical rotations in the evening and possibly on weekends. Some pre-requisite and core courses may be offered in the evening and online. What courses must I take before applying for the ASN Program? To be eligible to apply for the ASN Program, the following courses must be completed with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better by the end of spring semester (Clarkesville) and summer semester (Blairsville). 4 Does the program offer internship opportunities? Nursing students have assigned clinical hours but these are not considered internships. Is there going to be a LPN or Paramedic to RN Bridge Program? NGTC may consider a bridge(s) in the future but there are no immediate plans to do so. What are the time limits on transferability of courses? years all ACCT, ALHS, BUSN, CIST, CLBT, COMP, NAST, EMSP, HECT, MAST, PNSG, and PHAR courses. 10 years BIOL courses and all occupational courses not listed above. However, if course content and competencies have changed significantly within the 10-year period, faculty may request that students validate skills or repeat a course. No expiration all general education/basic skills courses (ARTS, CHEM, ECON, EMPL, ENGL, HIST, MATH, MUSC, PHYS, PSYC, SOCI, SPCH); and courses used to satisfy elective credit requirements. These are the immunizations you will need to begin the program. You will also need to have a current Flu Vaccine and 2 TB tests each year. Varicella If you have had varicella, you must have a titer to document immunity Hepatitis B If you do not have documentation of your dates, you must have a titer to document immunity. 5 Step 2 Submit an Intent Form Obtain and complete the Intent Form found at on the ASN link to the webpage. Intent form must be submitted by the above dates to the following address: Attn: ASN Program, Mrs. Farilyn Rearden PO Box 5, Clarkesville, GA Step 3 Take the HESI Exam The HESI Admission Assessment (A2) Exam must be completed by the above dates. HESI exam scores are calculated from the areas of Math, Anatomy & Physiology and English. The learner profile and critical thinking portions are not considered part of the exam score. The highest overall score from one sitting will be used. Only the first two attempts on the HESI Assessment Exam (within the 12 month period prior to the intent form due date) will be considered in the competitive process. If you take the HESI at NGTC the scores are retrieved directly from the testing company. If taken elsewhere, you must submit an official copy from the HESI Company. Request that they the results directly to frearden@northgatech.edu. The HESI may be taken two times within the year before the intent form due date. Competitive Admissions: Applicant s scores on the HESI (A2) exam (weighted 0%) and cumulative GPA (weighted 0%) from the following 8 courses: Math 1111 College Algebra, Math Modeling, Statistics or Calculus) ENGL 1101, BIOL 2113, 211, 1217 all with their labs are ranked. Students with the highest combined score will be admitted.
