2 Career Services an overview We are here to support you in your career planning, decision making and job searching Our resources help with exploration of industry and career fields, including online resources, networking contacts, and survey data on what others have done We assist you in developing your job search skills networking, writing, interviewing and negotiating 2
3 Structure your career plans and your job search ASSESS your work related values, skills, abilities, interests and personality RESEARCH and explore market conditions, occupations, industries, and employers. IDENTIFY your target job and long term career goals and TAKE ACTION in a job search. 1 2 Note: progress through these steps isn t always sequential 3 Career Plans Surveys PennDesign graduates work at range of firms and institutions (private, nonprofit and public) in many different geographic locations. Positions reported to Career Services by graduate students from our post-graduation career plans survey for May, August and December of each year We have survey data posted from the last 6 years (2013 data to be posted in Spring) Our surveys include salary averages When you graduate, please complete our Career Plans survey. Results will be posted (anonymously) on the website. 3
4 How a student might use Career Services Self Assessment Identify your strengths, skills and interests develop a message about yourself (60 second introduction) Strategize professional skills, knowledge or experience you would like to develop meet with a CS advisor Career Field and Employer Research Attend employer presentations and Career Fairs- use PennLink and Masters Calendar of workshops and programs Use Career Services Library and website resources Develop your networks use the PennDesign Employer Contact Database, myquakernet or LinkedIn to make contact with alumni Attend PennDesign panel sessions with alumni and other professionals, build your networks PennDesign Career Connection Day (career fair) 4
5 How a student might use Career Services cont d Identify positions and apply: Use online resources including PennLink and external job sites listed on Career Services website to identify internship or job openings Attend Career Fairs there are several that may be of interest Utilize resume/cover letter samples and advice on the CS website Attend resume and cover letter writing workshops Critiques are available from CS advisors Set up a mock interview with a CS advisor to practice your communication skills Attend a workshop on interviewing or negotiating strategies 5
