Summer Newsletter August 2007 AT THE INSTITUTE *Fall 2007 Schedule *Entrepreneur and Venture Club Kick-Off Meeting *Office Hours AROUND CAMPUS AND TOWN *Ann Arbor SPARK: Mingle n Match AT THE INSTITUTE============================================== *FALL 2007 SCHEDULE This enewsletter will be sent out every two weeks during the Fall and Winter semesters and will contain important dates for upcoming events, deadlines, programs on campus and in the community. Because the end of August and September can be such a busy and demanding time, this last enewsletter edition of the summer is sparse by design and will help incoming and returning students plan their schedules. Session Thursday, September 6 7:30 a.m. in room K1320 5:30 p.m. in room K1310 Students interested in learning more about the Wolverine Venture Fund and the Frankel Commercialization Fund should attend on of these sessions to learn more about the application process and the expectations for students who are part of these funds. Fund Application Deadline Wednesday, September 12 All applications are due on September 12. ZLI General Info. Session Wednesday, September 12 5 p.m. at 1014 DOW This information session will discuss all of the events and programs that the Institute has to offer students. All students with an interest in entrepreneurship are encouraged to attend. ZLI General Info. 2 This information session will describe the Dare to Dream grants available to students, the application for each grant, and the deliverables to obtain each grant. Mingle 'n' Match Tuesday, September 18 4:30 p.m. in room W0750 Students with entrepreneurial interests informally mingle with students who already have a business concept with the goal of joining the team and working to create the business. Entrepalooza Friday, September 21 All day in the Michigan League Free! Register now at Join us for Entrepalooza 2007: Anybody Can Do It -- the Business School's signature event celebrating entrepreneurship and new business formation. Entrepalooza 2007 will provide students and business executives an outstanding networking opportunity, in addition to exposing attendees to the various facets of entrepreneurship. Featured keynote speakers include Samuel Zell of Equity Group Investment and Kevin O'Connor former CEO and Chairman of DoubleClick, Inc. Panel discussions include corporate intrapreneurship, founding and growing start-ups, venture capital investing, and launching on the cheap. Entrepalooza is presented by the Entrepreneur & Venture Club and the Zell Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. Dare to Dream Application Due Friday, September 28 All applications are due on September 28. MBC Info. Session Friday, October a.m. in room E1540 Any student interested in participating in the 2008 Michigan Business Challenge should attend this information session. We will review the application process, the details of each round, and the deliverables required. We will also discuss intercollegiate business plan competitions. Dare to Dream Announcement Friday, October a.m. in room E1540 The recipients of Dare to Dream grants will be announced before the MBC information session. All applicants, regardless of whether they receive a grant, are encouraged to stay to learn more about the Michigan Business Challenge. UM PE Conference Thursday, October 18 All day in the Michigan League This symposium is an exceptional opportunity to interact with attendees comprised of leaders from private equity, investment banking, and top businesses from across the country. Business Development Seminar: Executive Summary Thursday, November 1 5:30 p.m. in room E1550 This seminar will discuss how to write an executive summary for a start-up company. The executive summary is part of the application for the Michigan Business Challenge. Dare to Dream Training Friday, November 2 All day in room W0768 9:00 Opportunity recipients 12:00 Assessment recipients 3:00 Integration recipients This training helps students prepare their deliverables for the Dare to Dare grant. Each training in tailored for the appropriate grant level. All students are welcome to attend. VCIC Info. Session Tuesday, November 13 5 p.m. in room E1540 This information session is for students interested in learning more about the Venture Capital Investment Competition and how to sign up to compete in the Ross Internal VCIC. MBC Application Due Friday, November 16 All applications are due on November 16. Marcel Gani Student Panel Friday, November a.m. in room W Marcel Gani summer interns will discuss their experiences working for entrepreneurial companies and will answer questions about the program requirements and the benefits of what they received. VCIC Application Due Wednesday, November 21 All applications are due on November 21 Dare to Dream Deliverables Due Wednesday, November 21 The business hypothesis for the Opportunity Grant is due. The intermediate deliverables for the Assessment grant are due. Business Development Seminar: The Pitch Monday, November p.m. in room W2740 This seminar will discuss how to perfect the pitch for your start-up company when speaking to a panel of investors. The pitch is part of Round One of the Michigan Business Challenge.

4 Business Development Seminar: The Pitch Wednesday, November 28 5:30 p.m. in room E0540 This seminar will discuss how to perfect the pitch for your start-up company when speaking to a panel of investors. The pitch is part of Round One of the Michigan Business Challenge. MBC Round 1 Friday, November 30 1 p.m. in the Great Lakes Room at Palmer Commons During Round One of the 2008 Michigan Business Challenge, student teams will have three minutes to pitch their business idea to a panel of judges followed by three more minutes of question and answer. Internal Venture Capital Investment Competition Wednesday, December 5 Student teams compete to see who will move forward to the regional VCIC at the University of Colorado. Business Development Seminar: Articulating Market Information Thursday, December 6 5:30 p.m. in room W2759 This seminar will discuss how to research and convey the market information for a start-up company. A market and financial overview is the required deliverable for Round Two of the Michigan Business Challenge. Business Development Seminar: Financials Tuesday, December 11 This seminar will discuss how to research the financial information for a start-up company. A market and financial overview is the required deliverable for Round Two of the Michigan Business Challenge. *ENTREPRENEUR AND VENTURE CLUB Sunday, September 9 at 4:30 p.m. in room E0530 This is an opportunity for incoming students to meet like-minded people and learn about the entrepreneurial activities available in the community. *OFFICE HOURS Beginning in late August, students will be able to sign up for office hours directly on the Zell Lurie Institute website.
