2 Report name : Local Section Administration Form 2011 Generated Date : Jan 8, :13 PM Chair's report: Please provide a narrative of the past year's activity/successes/challenges:* IYC: One of my goals for this year was to have several activities related to the celebration of the International Year of Chemistry. Our first IYC activity was a science café held on Tues., Feb. 1, in Chapel Hill. The topic was climate change and featured Dr. Frank Princiotta, Director of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division of the US EPA. The topic was climate change. Over 30 people attended this very interesting talk on an extremely important current interest. There was a lively discussion after the talk. The 2nd IYC event was a dinner meeting in May. Dr. L. Lazarus, NIEHS, gave a very enthusiastic presentation "Color and Visual Perception in Art: Chemical and Physical Analyses, Neuroscience Insights and the Psychology of Art." The next Section activity was October 25, when we continue our celebration of the International Year of Chemistry with a nod to one of the earliest advances in biochemistry, brewing. The meeting was held at Aviators Brewery and a discussion of beer brewing and a tasting were the foci of the evening. A second goal was to sponsor joint meetings with our local affiliated discussion groups to help emphasize that they are part of the ACS. We also tried to tie the talks into the IYC foci. Our first joint meeting was with the Triangle Chromatography Discussion Group. This was a half-day workshop titled "Features and Benefits of a Paperless Calibration System." This workshop, targeting practicing chromatographers, took place on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 from 8:25 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. The workshop lecturer was Jim Bufano, Senior Consultant with PCI, LLC. This half-day workshop was intended to provide practicing chromatographers with a working knowledge on setting up and maintaining paperless system calibrations. The workshop tackled the pros and cons, and also provided an in-depth look on ensuring that compliance requirements (GLP, cgmps) are met for their laboratory systems. The instructor then demonstrated how such a system can be used to better track out of tolerance data, provide better analytical records, and reduce costs. Lastly, the requirements for implementing the changeover with regard to hardware, SOPs, and training of laboratory personnel were defined. The second co-meeting was held in September with the Triangle Area Mass Spectrometry discussion group. The speaker was Dr. Andy Hoofnagle, U Wash, and the topic was Clinical Protein Analysis. The third co-sponsored meeting was with TriMR, the Triangle Magnetic Resonance discussion group. This meting was held on December 1, in Kannapolis, NC, at the David H. Murdock Research Center. A more detailed account of the overall activities of the Discussion Groups is in the supplemental materials. 125th NC ACS Section Conference: Of primary importance was to have a successful Section Conference. Our 2011 Conference was held on September 30, at the NCSU College of Textiles and was exceptionally successful. There were ca. 225 attendees. Food and beverages were provided for all attendees. The scientific program started with 129 poster presentations by high school, undergraduate, and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows and non-students. Cash prizes were presented to three presenters in each of the high school, undergraduate, and graduate student sections. The program is submitted as supplemental material. An important part of the Conference is the awarding of Section Undergraduate Research Scholarships. A more detailed summary is provided in the supplemental material. Prof. Nicholas H. Oberlies, currently at UNC Greensboro, was honored as the 2011 Section Distinguished Speaker. Prof Oberlies presented a seminar on Needles in the Hay Stack: Structurally Diverse Anticancer Leads from Page No - 2

3 Report name : Local Section Administration Form 2011 Generated Date : Jan 8, :13 PM Filamentous Fungi. The eight new 50-year and five new 60 year ACS members were honored as were the four new ACS Fellows from the NC Section: Prof. Al Crumbliss, Duke University; Prof. Mike Ramsey, UNC; Prof. Al Tonelli, NCSU; and Prof. Orlin Velev, NCSU. National Chemistry Week: The Section planned two activities during the week. The first activity took place on Saturday, October 15, at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, and the second activity was held at the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC, on Saturday, October 22. Details of the activities can be found in the supplemental material. SEED. The local section fully supports the activities of the SEED program at the local level. In 2011, 8 SEED II students and 18 SEED I students were supported. The local section provided $10,655 direct support. SERMACS The Section is sponsoring the 2012 SERMACS meeting which will be held in Raleigh, NC. Planning is advanced with over 35 Symposia planned in addition to Divisional sessions. The web site for the conference is available at Chair's goals for the Section Other Activities: Chemistry Olympiad: The NC Section supported the 2011 local Olympiad, which was overseen by Dr.Myra Halpin, North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Dr. Halpin has been chosen to be a member of the National Committee which will host the 2012 International Chemistry Olympiad, to be held in Maryland. North Carolina Science Teachers Association Meeting: Section Past-Chair, Marc ter Horst, attended the North Carolina Science Teachers Association meeting in Greensboro in November, where he interacted with over 100 teachers. He learned that many teachers visit the website, LearnNC, which is through the UNC Education School. Marc met with a person involved with the LearnNC site, and they are interested in partnering with the Local Section events, such as a dinner event for science teachers, or SERMACS webinars. The Local Section financially supported the NC Academy of Sciences annual meeting. ACS Publications held a two day meeting, ACS on Campus, at UNC-CH, February The meeting included seminars, networking and training. a. Please list your top 3 goals: Increase overall participation of NC ACS members in Section activities. Increase diversity (professional/geographic/demographic) of NC ACS members participating in events. Improve public relations and marketing outreach to NC ACS members and their communities. 4 Report name : Local Section Administration Form 2011 Generated Date : Jan 8, :13 PM b. What are your concerns and challenges?* Although our Section has a relatively diverse membership profile, in part because it includes the state capitol, major universities, and the Research Triangle Park, a relatively small group of regularly volunteering members is involved with Section activities. If we are ultimately going to achieve the objectives that consistently appear on our monthly executive committee minutes (for example, expanding educational involvement of K-12 teachers, enhancing outreach activities for the community, increasing underrepresented populations in STEM activities, etc.), we must first increase the participation of our approximately 2,500 members in Section activities. The regular volunteers simply do not have the bandwidth to accept additional responsibilities Chair-Elect's goals for the Section Increasing the diversity of participating members would also ultimately result in a deeper volunteer pool. For example, although a significant percentage of our Section's membership work as industrial chemists, this group is not proportionally represented at volunteer activities. Greater participation by industrial chemist volunteers might lead to increased funding for other activities. Many of our members are students or have recently graduated; increased participation by this demographic would pay dividends to the Section down the road. To facilitate increased overall and demographic participation in activities, our Section must do a better job marketing itself to NC ACS members and their communities. As a Section, we have many accomplishments to be proud of. Traditionally, however, we have not effectively communicated or built upon our successes. A challenge for the coming year will be to identify ways in which our Section can proactively increase its visibility throughout the area. a. Please list your top 3 goals: Increase participation of NC-ACS members in Local Section activities. Improve outreach to K-12 educators, especially high school teachers. Improve the public relations and marketing efforts of NC- ACS. Page No - 4

5 Report name : Local Section Administration Form 2011 Generated Date : Jan 8, :13 PM b. What are your concerns and challenges?* As the 2012 Chair pointed out, the involvement of the local section members in our section activities is not as diverse as it could be. We need to focus on activating more members to participate in local section activities, which we could do by targeting specific populations such as college and grad students, industrial members, retired members, postdocs, high school teachers, recruiters, etc. In particular, we also need to improve professional development services provided for section members, particularly job placement and retraining for unemployed members. We have considered asking our local industries to host sectional activities at their locations, thus exposing their businesses to a targeted audience as well. My biggest concern about increasing the involvement of the local section members is how to reach them in an effective way. It is my understanding that ACS National is developing a new listserve system for local sections, which could help greatly in these efforts. Our 2012 chair has been proactive about reaching out to various constituents, such as students and faculty at the smaller colleges, by physically visiting them at their locations when possible, which had a significant impact on not only our scholarship program but also participation in our local section activities. We have also been striving to improve the public relations and marketing efforts of the section. We have recruited someone to chair the Marketing committee, but have yet to identify someone to lead our Public Relations efforts. I spoke with some people from the National ofice at the ACS Leadership Institute about this issue, and they notified me that National can help us with these recruitment efforts; they can also help us target press releases to the appropriate news media. In addition, we could improve these efforts by establishing partnerships with other non-profit, professional organizations within the area (RTP) and region on community outreach, education, service oriented activities whenever applicable. Finally, we have also been attempting to improve our interactions with high school teachers, and have been seeking one to serve on our executive committee. My major concern in this area is how to reach them. Our past chair attended the North Carolina Science Teachers Association meeting last fall, and we plan to do that again this year. I learned at the ACS Leadership Institute that National has some material that we can use during these types of events, so we plan to utilize those. 23 Report name : Review Form 2011 Generated Date : Jan 8, :14 PM Publish Comments North Carolina Review Form 2011 Michael Singer:Hello North Carolina Section First, let me express to the entire section leadership, my apologies for the late review of your 2011 Annual Report. The fault is entirely mine. Now on to the good stuff. Looking over your 2011 Annual Report - it appears that the North Carolina section had a very strong year. The NCW event is very impressive both for the attendance and the amount of non- ACS member volunteers! I applaud you for organizing hands on lab sessions as part of the NCW event. I am glad to see you participated in the Science Cafe. In this economy - science careers is always a valuable topic. The Section Conference is a nice merger of young chemists presneting their work and acknowledgement of the 50/60 year members. I like the idea of bringing the generations of chemists together. Your executive committee seems strong. I commend you on attendance at the 2011 ACS Leadership Institute. Your 2011 Goal of increasing interactions with science educators is a great goal. The Chemistry Olympiad is a goodstep in that direction. I hope you have active student affiliate chapters. Also a good way to involve the youth and teachers as mentors. Your website and TarHelium publication are very impressive. The website is easy to navigate, full of current content and a nice balance of archival information. Expanding to include Social media such as Linked In is certwainly riding the wave of the future. Some items of inconsistency I noted - you listed only 1 section meeting, but 11 meeting notices. Certainly TarHelium indicated more than 1 section meeting. Your financials do not appear to be completely in order. I see the fix you attempted in Project Seed. The deficit lines do not seem correct. I will pass this along to LSAC so someone better at finaincial data can review. I see you conducted your section election via Survey Monlkey. I did not check, but have you updated your section bylaws to permit electronic balloting. I see that there is an effort to create a standard operating procedure / policy for communicating to local section members without an active address. Overall appears to be a good year for local section activities in North Carolina. Continue the good work. File Name File Size Brief Description Response To Review Comments Dear Michael, On behalf of the North Carolina Section, I d like to thank you for your review of our 2011 annual report. We very much appreciate your comments concerning our NCW, Science Cafe, and Sectional Conference events and for recognizing our commitment to greater interaction with science educators. Our newsletter editor and webmaster work very hard to produce quality, user-friendly products, so we are thankful for your recognition of their efforts. We also value your feedback concerning (1) - meeting notices, (2) - Project SEED financials, and (3) - electronic voting. For your consideration, please find additional clarification on each of these items, below. (1) Meeting Notices: Review Comment: You listed only 1 section meeting, but 11 meeting notices. Certainly TarHelium indicated more than 1 section meeting. Response: Please note that there were 11 meetings of the executive committee, which are also open for any member to attend. The sectional meeting was a one-time event at North Carolina State University with a poster/presentation scientific program. (2) Project SEED Financials: Review Comment: Your financials do not appear to be completely in order. I see the fix you attempted in Project Seed. The deficit lines do not seem correct. I will pass this along to LSAC so someone better at financial data can review. Response: A follow-up conference call about this topic was conducted on July 19, 2012 with several ACS staff. To ensure full transparency and cooperation, all NC ACS financial information from was sent to Mary Kirchoff in electronic format (Excel) on July 20 and 22. The confusion appeared to stem from the SEED and non-seed student designation (the NC ACS SEED Program is unique, to the best of our knowledge, in this regard). (3) Electronic Voting: Review Comment: I see you conducted your section election via Survey Monkey. I did not check, but have you updated your section by-laws to permit electronic balloting Response: Please note that our Section s by-laws were revised (effective May 22, 2006) to permit electronic voting. Specifically, references to a mail ballot were removed. If we can provide you with any additional information concerning the 2011 annual report, please don t hesitate to ask. Thanks, Page No - 1
