3 CIHR Team Grant: Perinatal Health Care System Improvement The specific objective of this funding opportunity is to provide support for a nationwide, coordinated effort to: Conduct an in-depth, systematic analysis of systemic issues in perinatal health care provision at the national level; Generate a comprehensive set of evidence-based national recommendations to address the issues identified; and Translate those recommendations into actions at the national, regional and/or provincial level that result in demonstrable, measurable improvements in perinatal health care delivery and consequently improved maternal and infant outcomes at a national level. HRS internal deadline: October 4, 2016 Full application deadline: October 18, &masterList=true CIHR SPOR Mentorship Chair in Innovative Clinical Trials The Mentorship Chair funding opportunity aims to support the development of mentorship capacity and train a new generation of investigators in the area of innovative clinical trials and patient-oriented research. As the ict (innovative clinical trials) initiative is an integral part of the SPOR program, successful applicants for the Mentorship Chair should seek to find synergies and engage, when appropriate and possible, with other SPOR-funded entities such as the SUPPORT Units and the Canadian Clinical Trials Coordinating Centre (CCTCC) to strengthen collaboration and maximize the use of available resources. The total amount available from CIHR for this funding opportunity is $4,000,000, enough to fund approximately eight grants. The maximum amount per chair is $500,000 for up to five years with a yearly breakdown as follows: Year 1: $180,000 Years 2-5: $80,000 The additional funds for the first year are aimed to fully establish the mentorship program by providing resources for recruitment and retention of mentees, and for establishing the needed infrastructure. Applicants must secure external partnership contributions from non-federal sources to match the CIHR contribution at a minimum 1:1 ratio. Partnership Requirements Funding allocated through the ict initiative will adhere to the principles that underlie all SPOR programs, including Networks, SUPPORT Units, the Canadian Clinical Trials Coordinating Centre (CCTCC), and patient engagement activities. The SPOR principles are: Patients need to be involved in all aspects of the research to ensure questions and results are relevant; Decision-makers and clinicians need to be involved throughout the entire research process to ensure integration into policy and practice; Funding under SPOR is based on a 1:1 matching formula with non-federal government partners to ensure relevance and applicability; Effective patient-oriented research requires a multi-disciplinary approach; and SPOR is outcome driven and incorporates performance measurement and evaluation as integral components of the initiative. *HRS Note: Partner funds must have the appropriate overhead included in their cash contributions, at a minimum 25%. Applicants are expected to work with their nominating institutions, provinces/territories, industry, charities and foundations, and other partners to secure matching sources of funding by the application deadline. Partner contributions cannot be funds 3
4 that have previously been leveraged for other CIHR initiatives. Matching partner contributions from non-federal sources can include up to 25% eligible cash equivalent contributions. Key points are: CIHR DEADLINE: Nov 15/16 (Full application / no registration or LOI required) Nominated PA within 15 years of first independent academic appointment One Mentee required at least one mentee at application (including trainees at graduate, postdoc, and post-health professional level as well as new investigators). Min 70% of combined CIHR/partner contributions must be directed to salary/stipend of the mentees Max 30% of combined CIHR/partner contributions can be used as a research allowance to support research, education, mentoring, travel and KT activities If as a result of this grant, host-institution-controlled salary funds are freed up, then the host institution is required to reinvest this entire amount in the Chair program by funding new trainees at the graduate, postdoc, and post-health professional degree levels, and/or new investigators, to work under the mentorship of the Chair. The online renomination form can be found here: Submission deadline: November 30 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Global Grand Challenges: Accelerate Development of New Therapies for Childhood Cryptosporidium Infection (Round 18) This call is soliciting new tools and technologies that have potential i) to overcome the technical barriers in working with Cryptosporidium that have historically hampered progress, and ii) to improve our ability to develop and translate active compounds into effective therapies for treatment of pediatric cryptosporidiosis. The goal of this call is to develop broadly applicable approaches that can be used to accelerate development of therapeutic interventions, rather than to support the development of specific interventions themselves. A few of the many potential examples to be considered include: Development of novel moderate- to high-throughput screening approaches that target different life-stages of the parasite or that recapitulate aspects of the realistic in vivo environment of the parasite (e.g. gut-on-a-chip or other like technologies); New methods for the identification and validation of drug targets in Cryptosporidium, as well as methods for interrogating validated targets within the context of whole cell phenotypic assays (e.g. target-based reporter assays); Novel methods for genetic manipulation of the Cryptosporidium genome, particularly those that allow regulated gene expression; Systematic approaches to explore opportunities for host-directed therapies, based on a rational understanding of parasite metabolism and parasite/host interactions; Validation of small animal disease models that are more tractable than the calf or gnotobiotic piglet, but which model human infection and disease (particularly valuable if immunocompetent and/or supportive of C. hominis infection); HRS internal deadline: October 26, 2016 Full application deadline: November 9,
9 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Trudeau Fellowship Each year, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation names up to five Trudeau fellows: academics and public intellectuals who have set themselves apart through their research achievements, their creativity, their commitment to finding solutions to some of the major issues facing society, and their ability to communicate their findings to the public. Trudeau fellows are chosen by an independent jury in a rigorous selection process. The Trudeau fellowship carries a total value of $225,000, payable over three years, and as such, offers meaningful financial support. However, what truly distinguishes this award is the opportunity it gives to highly accomplished researchers to join the Foundation s vibrant intergenerational, cross-sectoral, and interdisciplinary community. The work of the Foundation s community of fellows, mentors, and scholars is organized around four themes: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada in the world, and people and their natural environment. Trudeau fellows are noted for their original contributions to one or more of these four themes and are selected in light of their interest in contributing their expertise to the Foundation s community. Trudeau fellows are appointed for life.
