3 CIHR Population Health Intervention Research The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to: Support New Investigators to generate evidence about interventions in health and other sectors that have the potential to promote health and health equity for First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples at a population level; Catalyze new and existing collaborations involving new investigators, First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, not-forprofit, private and/or public sectors within and outside of health; Facilitate consideration and application of new evidence about population health interventions in decision-making. 1&masterList=true HRS internal deadline: November 1, 2016 Full application deadline: November 15, 2016 CIHR CCHS Nutrition Analysis The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support the creation of evidence to support the development of nutrition and health policy and programs through the use of the 2015 CCHS- Nutrition data as it relates to the impact of nutrition and food security on health and disease. This funding opportunity will support research related to the use of the 2015 CCHS data to answer population health questions. Linkages between 2015 CCHS data and other data sets (e.g. ecological data, environmental data, provincial health services administrative data) are encouraged. 4 CIHR Patient-Oriented Research Collaboration Grants The objective of this funding opportunity is to catalyze research that aligns with the SPOR Capacity Development Framework and the SPOR Patient Engagement Framework by: Building capacity in Canada s health system for patient-oriented research through projects conducted by integrated teams; and, Increasing the number of clinician scientists meaningfully involved in patient-oriented research by integrating them in patient-oriented research teams. 1&masterList=true HRS internal deadline: November 29, 2016 Full application deadline: December 13, 2016 Warren Alpert Foundation: Warren Alpert Foundation Prize The Warren Alpert Foundation Prize, in association with Harvard Medical School, recognizes and honors one or more scientists, physicians and researchers whose 1) scientific achievements have led to the prevention, cure or treatment of human diseases or disorders, and/or 2) whose research constitutes a seminal scientific finding that holds great promise of ultimately changing our understanding of or ability to treat disease. Value: $500,000 USD, a citation and plaque Nomination deadline: October 31, 2016 Alex s Lemonade Stand Innovation Grant Alex s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) is committed to creating opportunities for new and innovative research into treatments and cures for childhood cancers. Innovation grants are designed as seed funding for researchers with a novel approach to pediatric oncology scientific investigation. This may represent a change in research direction and/or an innovative new idea that moves away from an investigator s prior research but for which a strong case is made for the potential impact on childhood cancers. Innovation Grants will support research proposals to be carried out by investigators who are already established, have a track record of peer-reviewed publications and evidence of successfully competing for extramural funding. The grant is for two years up to $125,000 per year for direct costs only. Letter of intent deadline: November 1, 2016 (11:59 PM Eastern Time) 4

5 Michael G. DeGroote Fellowship Awards Each award provides non-renewable funding of $50,000 for one year for successful applicants. The funding is comprised of $40,000 from the Michael G. DeGroote Health Sciences Development Fund and $10,000 contributed by the applicant s supervisor. Awards are available in two categories: the Michael G. DeGroote Fellowship Award in Basic Biomedical Science and the Michael G. DeGroote Fellowship Award in Clinical Research. Candidates conducting basic science research are eligible for the Basic Biomedical Science Fellowship Award and those pursuing clinical research are eligible for the Clinical Research Fellowship Award. Applicants must identify in their application which award they are applying for. Separate selection committees will review the respective applicants for each award. Applications are now being accepted and we are seeking qualified candidates to apply. For candidates who hold (or are completing) a PhD, the proposed supervisor(s) listed in their application must be different than their PhD supervisor. Priority will be given to those applicants whose graduate training has not been exclusively at McMaster. Expectations It is expected that winning applicants will seek out and attain external funding within their one-year award term. Supervisors are expected to assist their candidates in doing so. Full application deadline: November 1, 2016 BioCanRx - Clinical Trials, Enabling Studies, Catalyst and Clinical, Social and Economic Impact Programs BioCanRx has set the next intake date for funding applications in their rolling, open call process. BioCanRx builds on past and ongoing investments in the area of cancer biotherapeutics that have a clear path to, or are ready for, clinical trials. The network is strengthening Canada's ability to translate the unfolding promise of immune-based cancer therapies into benefits for patients. As an open call, this opportunity is open to all investigators located at Canadian institutions eligible to receive peer-reviewed funding from the three federal research-granting councils (CIHR, SSHRC, NSERC). LOIs are now being accepted for the four research programs. 6 Crohn s and Colitis Canada Grants-in-Aid of Research The Crohn s and Colitis Canada Grants-in-Aid of Research program is intended to support research on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This research program helps to advance prevention, treatments, health policy and to ultimately find cures. GIA s support research projects with a defined objective, conducted by an investigator working alone or in collaboration with others. Grants will be awarded for a maximum of three years, not to exceed $125,000 per annum. A grant of $5,000, provided in partnership with CIHR s the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD), may be awarded as a one-time lump sum to the highest ranked project from a new investigator. This funding would help support travel and ancillary costs for the individual to attend or speak at gastroenterology conferences or to purchase essential equipment necessary to their study. LOI deadline: November 14, 2016 HRS internal deadline: January 6, 2017 Full application deadline: January 20, 2017 Hamilton Health sciences Early Career Awards This program offers individuals who are early in their research career an opportunity to receive a personnel stipend up to $50,000 to provide protected time and support for carrying out A research project. These Early Career Awards are to be used for the purchase of a portion of time for the applicant to pursue research in their specialty area. To view the guidelines for submitting an application, please visit: Full application deadline: November 15, 2016 at midnight EOCI PharmaComm 2016 Endocrine Awards: Diabetes Education & Junior Investigator EOCI PharmaComm, a medical education company based in Montreal, is promoting two awards under the umbrella 2016 Endocrine Awards : Diabetes Educator Diabetes Junior Investigator Apply by Friday, November 18, 2016 to be eligible to win one of the six available grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 and a chance to present your research or patient education project at the Endocrine Awards Dinner on Monday, December 12, 2016 in Toronto, Ontario. The Junior Investigator and Diabetes Educator Awards were created to support research and patient education initiatives led by early career physicians, researchers and educators, and are open to healthcare professionals working within the scope of diabetes care across Canada including nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, exercise specialists, psychologists, chiropodists, podiatrists, social workers, etc. Full application deadline: November 18,

7 Canadian Lung Association/Ontario Thoracic Society National Grant Review The Grant-in-Aid (GIA) program, a national peer reviewed application process, supports pulmonary research or development projects and offers grants for research operating costs, including laboratory supplies, technicians and some equipment for up to one or two years (varies from province to province). The Canadian Lung Association (CLA) manages the GIA program application and peer review processes. The provincial Lung Associations make funding decisions and administer the awards, taking into account application budgets and competition results. The participating provincial Lung Associations are: British Columbia Lung Association Lung Association of Alberta & NWT Ontario Lung Association Applicants should refer to their respective provincial regulations governing Grants-in-Aid for additional information as guidelines vary from province to province. Registration deadline: November 18, 2016 HRS internal deadline: November 25, 2016 Full application deadline: December 9, 2016 Susan G. Komen Inflammatory Breast Cancer Innovator Grants Susan G. Komen, the Milburn Foundation, and the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation have entered into a groundbreaking partnership to provide a unique funding opportunity addressing key needs in this understudied form of breast cancer. A major goal of this partnership is to promote innovative ideas to expand the knowledge of IBC and develop innovative new treatments. An additional goal is to attract new investigators from diverse disciplines to apply their expertise to the IBC field. Therefore, in addition to established IBC investigators, we encourage investigators from all fields to submit proposals for innovative IBC research, regardless of prior research experience. These Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Grants are intended to stimulate the exploration of new ideas and novel approaches to the field of IBC research that have significant potential to rapidly improve our understanding of IBC and TNBC. This program will consist of two stages. In the first stage, one year of funding will be awarded to allow investigators to establish the foundation of a robust and innovative IBC research project. In the second stage, awardees will have the opportunity to compete for additional funding to build upon their original project. Such projects may include, but are not limited to, methods that will: Develop novel diagnostic methods for rapidly identifying and diagnosing IBC Refine genetic/genomic profiling of IBC Discover new targeted therapies for IBC Explore and further define the causes of IBC Discover additional risk factors for IBC Funding level: Up to $60,000 for one year. 8 Canadian Cancer Society - Awards for Excellence in Cancer Research 2017 The Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to invite nominations for each of the Society s four prestigious Awards for Excellence in Cancer Research for The awards include the Canadian Cancer Society Robert L. Noble Prize, Canadian Cancer Society O. Harold Warwick Prize, Canadian Cancer Society William E. Rawls Prize and the Canadian Cancer Society Bernard and Francine Dorval Prize. These prestigious awards recognize Canada s top cancer scientists and are also an opportunity to keep the public engaged in the successes from research by highlighting the progress achieved by Canadian scientists. Each award comes with a $20,000 contribution to the recipient s research program. See previous recipients of the Awards. The online renomination form can be found here: Submission deadline: November 30 Dairy Farmers of Canada Research Funding Program Nutrition Research DFC considers those applications that have nutritional and health implications for Canadian dairy products and are relevant to Canadian dairy farmers. In addition, we have a special interest in encouraging research that will help bring innovative and competitive dairy products with health benefits to the market. Of specific interest to DFC are research proposals which feature milk products in their entirety, demonstrate technological innovation and utilize a multidisciplinary approach, whenever possible, to address fundamental and applied research questions. Applied human randomized, controlled trials and in vivo mechanistic studies are of particular interest. Letter of intent deadline: December 1, 2016 The Plastic Surgery Foundation Various Research Grants Through its main funding programs, The PSF supports investigators from the beginning of their careers, during residency on up to well-established plastic surgeons. 9 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Trudeau Fellowship Each year, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation names up to five Trudeau fellows: academics and public intellectuals who have set themselves apart through their research achievements, their creativity, their commitment to finding solutions to some of the major issues facing society, and their ability to communicate their findings to the public. Trudeau fellows are chosen by an independent jury in a rigorous selection process. The Trudeau fellowship carries a total value of $225,000, payable over three years, and as such, offers meaningful financial support. However, what truly distinguishes this award is the opportunity it gives to highly accomplished researchers to join the Foundation s vibrant intergenerational, cross-sectoral, and interdisciplinary community. The work of the Foundation s community of fellows, mentors, and scholars is organized around four themes: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada in the world, and people and their natural environment. Trudeau fellows are noted for their original contributions to one or more of these four themes and are selected in light of their interest in contributing their expertise to the Foundation s community. Trudeau fellows are appointed for life. HRS internal deadline: ASAP Full application deadline: December 2, 2016 Weston Brain Institute Transformational Research 2017 Goal: To provide funding for preclinical translational research that will accelerate the development of therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases of aging. Funding: A maximum of $1,500,000 over up to 3 years. Eligibility: Researchers at or above the level of Assistant Professor or equivalent are eligible to apply as the Principal Applicant. Collaborators must be at the post-doctoral level or above. Disease scope: All the Institute s neurodegenerative diseases of aging are covered by this program (see Funding Overview) with the exception of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Projects focused on ALS should be submitted to the ALS-focused program scheduled to launch in early Development scope: Development of a therapeutic and/or a tool that helps to accelerate the development of therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases of aging. 10 Hamilton Community Foundation: Community Health, Education & Research Fund The objectives of this fund are to support innovative applied or participatory research in community health by: encompassing a broad definition of health that incorporates lifestyle, social, physical and economic environments, health promotion and disease prevention promoting partnerships and collaboration between researchers and community organizations, agencies and institutions promoting the dissemination of acquired knowledge amongst community organizations, agencies and institution The Fund has a particular interest in community health research that is focused on respiratory health. Additional priorities include: Health promotion and disease prevention (enabling people to improve their health by creating conditions in communities for health) Building a healthy community (collaborations for safe, caring, healthy, inclusive communities) Integration of best practice in health and social services (dissemination of acquired knowledge and research findings in ways that assist decision makers and practitioners) HRS internal deadline: December 16, 2016 Full application deadline: January 6, 2017 Crohn s and Colitis Canada - Innovations in IBD Research Grant Crohn's and Colitis Canada invites applications for an "Innovations Grant", to fund novel or innovative approaches to IBD research. Research proposals must conform to sound principles of research and may aim to collect pilot data for follow-on application(s).
