Financial id is funding that is provided by the federal and state governments to assist students with their educational expenses. he Financial id ffice (F) awards aid for periods of enrollment during the nine-month academic year* in the form of grants and scholarships, which do not have to be repaid, loans which must be repaid, and work-study funds which must be earned. tudents are considered for all funds available by submitting the Free pplication for Federal tudent id (FF) or the enewal FF. *Limited summer financial aid may be available. ontact the F. 6 ependent or ndependent? ligibility for financial aid is determined by whether you are a dependent of your parents or independent. f you are a dependent, your parents ability to contribute will be considered and their income must be reported on the Free pplication for Federal tudent id. ndependent students are evaluated on their own income, or with their spouse s, if applicable. You are considered independent if at least one of the following applies: You are at least 24 years of age* You are married You are enrolled in a graduate or professional education program beyond a Bachelor s degree You have dependents other than your children/ spouse who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30 You are an orphan or ward of court (or were a ward of court until age 18) You are a U.. rmed Forces veteran. *ome students who turn 24 years of age during the academic year of application may still be considered dependants, depending on the date of birth. ee your financial aid counselor. B. hort Length ertificate Programs. 1. ome ertificate objectives at the Los ngeles ommunity olleges may be completed in less time than that required for the ssociate of rts, ssociate of cience and ransfer objectives. 2. he following table shows the normal completion time and maximum time for ertificate Programs of varying lengths:. o be eligible for financial aid, a program must be at least six (6) months in length with a minimum of sixteen (16) units. tudents enrolled in a ertificate program may continue to qualify for financial aid up to ninety (90) attempted units, six (6) full-time semesters, or the equivalent, if they are planning to obtain an ssociate egree ( or ), or to ransfer to a four-year school in addition to obtaining the ertificate. ummer and Winter Financial id. ummer and Winter terms are included in the evaluation of atisfactory cademic Progress standards. 7 atisfactory cademic Progress (P) P standards apply to LL federal and state aid applicants, whether or not they have previously received aid to maintain eligibility for financial aid. Beginning with the academic year, LL students must meet the P Policy detailed below to be eligible to receive financial aid. tudents receiving financial aid enter into an agreement to make atisfactory cademic Progress toward their educational goal. Failure to maintain these standards will result in the loss of financial assistance. he Financial id ffice reviews academic progress at the end of each academic year. ll students receiving federal and state financial aid (except the BGFW) must comply with the following academic progress standards: General equirements tudents receiving financial aid must be enrolled in an eligible program. n eligible program is defined as: 1. ertificate, 2. n ssociates egree (/), 3. two-year academic ransfer Program that is acceptable for full credit toward a Baccalaureate egree. atisfactory cademic Progress tandards. Maintenance of a 2.0 cumulative GP. B. Fewer than ninety (90) attempted units for students who indicated / egrees or ransfer as their education goal. 1. L and Basic kills/emedial classes are excluded from the ninety (90) unit limit when determining units attempted. 2. tudents who have already earned an ssociate or higher degree will need to follow the appeal procedure. 3. n Progress (P) grades count as attempted units in the maximum time frame only. t does not affect the cumulative grade point average in the qualitative measure nor is it included as completed units in the quantitative measure.. ompletion of 75% cumulative units attempted. 1. ntries recorded in the student s academic record as ncomplete (), o redit (), and/or Withdrawal (W) are considered non-grades and must be 25% or less than the cumulative units attempted. pplication of tandards. atisfactory cademic Progress for financial aid students will be determined at the conclusion of the pring semester.
