The confusion may CCSO Gives Child Gift Of Boat Ride, Holiday Parade A kindergartner got a boats-eye view of the annual Christmas parade on Naples Bay over the weekend, thanks to the Collier County Sheriff s Office. For 6-year-old Rosio Andres, the ride on a CCSO Marine Unit patrol vessel in the 25th annual lighted boat parade Saturday night marked the girl s first time on a boat and her first time watching the parade. CCSO has been a regular participant in the parade and has taken a child who has a special need or who has done something exceptionally well along for the ride. Rosio, who attends Pinecrest Elementary School in Immokalee, is battling lymphoma and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for the past 10 months, said Eulalia Andres, the girl s mother. She has two years of chemotherapy remaining. When Rosio learned Friday afternoon she would be watching the parade on a boat she was so excited she wanted to go right then and there, her mother said. The night of the ride, Rosio dressed for a special occasion in a shiny pink and purple party dress with pink tights, sparkly purple ballet slippers and a sparkly pink Santa hat. She was cold at first, but when the boat ride began and she saw all the lights, she forgot about being cold, her mother said. She was happy and excited to be in the parade. Her daughter was dazzled by all of the lights on the boats, she said. Rosio took up Cpl. Todd Byrns on his offer to drive the CCSO boat, which was decked out in festive lights and a big red Santa hat. She drove for a couple of seconds and sat back down and leaned her head back like she was in awe, said Cpl. Byrns, a member of the Marine Unit. She s been having a rough time with chemo. I m glad we were able to get her mind off it for a couple of hours, at least. The Marine Industries Association of Collier County and its charitable arm, the Marine Industries Foundation, organize the parade. One hundred percent of the proceeds - donations from parade participants and the community benefit the Ricky King Fund, which helps children who have a medical need. Last year the parade raised $5,000 for the Ricky King fund, said Frank Perrucci, MIACC president and parade chairman. More than 30 boats were registered for this year s parade, he said. It s a neat community event, a neat boater event and a neat charitable event, Perrucci said.
3 MIACC Page 3 I Am Team Ocean NAPLES Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is announcing a new awareness campaign developed to promote ethical boating practices among boaters using protected coastal waters. Called I am Team OCEAN, the campaign is centered around a call to boaters to pledge their commitment to minimizing negative impacts while enjoying local islands, estuaries and coastal waters. Rookery Bay Reserve s I am Team OCEAN campaign will be led by Team OCEAN (Ocean Conservation Education Action Network), a group of 45 dedicated volunteers at Rookery Bay Reserve who reach out to boaters with a focus on visitor education and coastal stewardship. Team OCEAN has been around for years, but the new 'I am Team OCEAN' campaign brings added focus and energy to the educational and stewardship messages, said Kevin Claridge, Florida Coastal Office director. Instead of only having 45 volunteers serving as stewards, this provides a way for boaters anywhere to be a part of Team OCEAN. I am Team OCEAN encourages ethical boating practices such as proper navigation for safety and protection of fragile aquatic habitats, packing out and tying down to reduce litter, and observing wildlife from a distance. Taking care of southwest Florida s beautiful coastal areas is everyone s job, said Brooke Carney, Coastal Training Program coordinator for Rookery Bay Reserve. Carney developed the campaign in effort to galvanize support for the program. I m excited to launch the I am Team OCEAN campaign because it gives people the opportunity to learn how important their actions are, while joining hundreds of other local boaters in doing our part for the coast, she added. Team OCEAN is a boat-based volunteer program supported through a partnership between the Rookery Bay Reserve, Florida Sea Grant and other local community donors. Following a model at the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, volunteers with Rookery Bay Reserve's Team OCEAN have made weekly visits to high-use areas in the reserve since the program originally launched in Through this program, volunteers help serve as the reserve s eyes and ears on the water. Boaters can take the "I am Team OCEAN" pledge online here, or in person if they see a Team OCEAN volunteer in the community or on the water. Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve encompasses 110,000 acres of coastal lands and waters between Naples and Everglades National Park. It is managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in cooperation with NOAA. 4 Page 4 MIACC SCOTT NAMES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, ELDER AFFAIRS LEADERS THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, December 11, Jonathan Steverson, who for the past two years has overseen one of the state's five water-management districts, will head the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as Gov. Rick Scott begins a second term. Scott also has shaken up things at the Department of Elder Affairs. Scott appointed Sam Verghese to take over for Charles Corley, who, after running the agency for three years, stepped down as secretary Wednesday. Verghese had served as Scott's external affairs director since May. Prior to his stint in the governor's office, Verghese, a former staff director in the Florida House of Representatives, was chief of staff at the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Steverson, who served as former Gov. Charlie Crist's environmental policy coordinator, was named Thursday to replace former Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Herschel Vinyard, who left the post Nov. 26. Steverson has been director of the Northwest Florida Water Management District since In his new role, Steverson will work with lawmakers on carrying out a voter-approved constitutional amendment that dedicates fees from real estate transactions to water-resource protection and land-conservation projects. He will begin his new position Dec. 29. "Jon has dedicated his career to serving Floridians through the protection of our state's water and natural resources, and he is committed to our goal of protecting Florida's natural treasures so future generations and millions of tourists can enjoy our state's beauty," Scott said in a prepared statement. Steverson's appointment drew praise from Audubon Florida Executive Director Eric Draper, a prominent lobbyist on environmental issues. "Jon Steverson is a good public servant who can provide solid leadership for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection," Draper said. "He brings intelligence and integrity to an important job." Others, however, took more of a wait-andsee attitude approach. "We hope Jon Steverson will honor the state's responsibility to future generations to keep our fragile environment safe," Susan Glickman, Florida director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, said in an . "We must protect our natural resources and not polluters." Environmentalists were more apprehensive when Scott plucked Vinyard from a job with Jacksonville-based BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards to head the Department of Environmental Protection in January Steverson, a Florida State University lawschool graduate, comes with experience working with state legislators. He served in the governor's office under Crist and former Gov. Jeb Bush. Steverson also served as special counsel on policy and legislative affairs for the Department of Environmental Protection under Vinyard before taking over as executive director of the Northwest Florida Water Management District. The water management district appointment came as Scott signed more than $700 million in spending cuts for the five water management districts. Vinyard defended the cuts as a means to make the districts more efficient. The appointments of Steverson and Verghese are part of a series of changes in the Scott administration as the governor gets ready for his Jan. 6 inauguration. On Wednesday, Julie Jones, a former head of the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, was named secretary of the Department of Corrections. Scott also reappointed Jesse Panuccio as executive director of the Department of Economic Opportunity. On Monday, Scott named Mike Carroll as secretary of the Florida Department of Children and Families. Carroll, who has worked for the agency for more than two decades, has served as interim secretary since spring.

At a time when government regulations are expanding, the MIACC is striving to work with government - locally, statewide and nationally to protect equally all marine business concerns. Our goal is to inform our members how their business will be affected and how solutions can be reached if new regulations are at odds with marine business interests. In addition, it is equally important to work with the public in preserving their right to safe and fun boating. The MIACC works with educators and safety organizations to educate the public to practice safe boating. The MIACC also encourages members to put in place hands-on environmental business practices that will prevent pollution and damage to our coastal waters thus protecting boaters enjoyment of healthy waterways and ensuring a sustainable future for the environment and the marine industry. Marine Industries Promoting Access for Citizens In 2002 the Marine Industries Association of Collier County formed a Political Action Committee named Marine Industries Promoting Access for Citizens (MIPAC). This action was taken so that we can support issues and legislative candidates who assist the goals and purposes of the marine industries community. On a quarterly basis, the MIPAC seeks donations of $50.00 from each member. The MIPAC s missions and goals are to act upon problematic issues that must be addressed at the legislative level for the growth and protection of the marine industry. Monies collected from the MIPAC donations are used in supporting political decision makers that will tackle the very issues that affect all members of our industry. As a good steward of our member s donations, MIPAC adheres to uniform contribution criteria when determining how much and to which candidate assistance is allocated. MIPAC will educate you about the political landscape and issues facing our organization and will strategize political impact. In addition, the committee is always open to suggestions, questions and comments. Please send your quarterly donations to MIPAC, PO Box 9887, Naples, Florida st Quarter Contributions will be sent this week! PLEASE Remember to make checks payable to MIPAC!
