June #4 News in brief A 7th country joins FOOD Slovakia has adopted the FOOD programme and the Public Health Authority of Slovak Republic is the 30 th partner to join the Consortium A new Consortium Agreement Following the final meeting in Paris last April, a new consortium agreement will be soon proposed by the coordinator to the partners. More than visits on the FOOD website! and more than on the Belgian website! This publication arises from the project FOOD which has received funding from the European Union, in the framework of the Public Health Programme.

2 A new start for FOOD The final meeting in Paris on April 29th, 2011 was the opportunity to present the results of the project in terms of national communication campaigns and partners actions From the end of the FOOD project. to the beginning of the FOOD programme After an in-depth and intensive collaboration and involvement of all the partners during 28 months, the outcomes of the pilot project fully comply with the expectations and go even beyond: - 20 deliverables - Almost 100 initiatives of communication (all types of communication tools) - From 24 partners to 30 partners - 4 million employees reached restaurants following the national recommendations visits on the European FOOD website (February 2009 May 2011) visits on the Belgian FOOD website (February 2009 May 2011) The terms of the new Consortium have been discussed already and will soon lead to a new Agreement upon which the partners will be able to rely on. The Slovak Republic entering the project in February 2011 shows a good practice of dissemination of the results and tools as well as a proof that the new partners can benefit from the work done and adapt the messages and material to their national specificities. Other countries are interested in joining the new Consortium and an agreement is a secure and reliable way to shape general principles of work and quality. With no binding constraints, it provides the programme with a qualitative structure. The programme will continue with the main objectives and target groups of the project but will focus on other aspects at national scale. The idea is to have more flexibility for local actions within a European framework. The 2011 February meeting in Brussels Each country presented its new communication strategy after the analysis report from the Institut Paul Bocuse on the Evaluation questionnaires In May 2011, the FOOD network could proudly count more than 1900 restaurants in the six countries. 3 The FOOD Conference at the European Parliament in Brussels A great achievement in the FOOD dissemination More than 160 participants The plenary session in the morning hosted more than 160 participants and the afternoon workshops welcomed around 80 people. The round tables enabled to cross the strategies at national scale thanks to the FOOD partners and at European or international scales with the intervention of the WHO, the European Commission and the European Parliament representatives. In addition, the workshops let more time to explain the content of the recommendations and the communication strategies country by country. Panellists reported on results from the FOOD project s methodology and discussed lessons learned from the successful public-private partnership approach. Moderator Martin Caraher pointed out that long-term change regarding balanced nutrition could take 15 to 20 years, but the FOOD project proves much can be accomplished in the short term. The discussion between the speakers led to encouraging remarks, such as Ms. Spanou s conclusion: We are trying to spread good practices geographically. It s excellent to see projects among six member states (...) The FOOD project can offer opportunities to the member states By choosing to implement a policy of healthy nutrition, companies are aligning their interests with those of society, said Giulia del Brenna, Head of Unit, DG Enterprise and Industry. Caroline Bollars, World Health Organization, Regional Office for Europe: The best policy action would an increase in tax on unhealthy food and decrease in tax for subsidised healthy foods.
