Bob Quayle Clear Choice Building & Renovations Craig Sedoris More Time for You Ivan White, CR White House Remodelers Executive Director Shari Bates I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season and is refreshed and ready for a new and prosperous I look forward to working this next year to the best of my ability to carry on the tremendous progress I have seen with our association and our industry in the past few years. When I first became involved people asked what is NARI. I told then that NARI is the best association that no-one has heard about. That has changed due to the continued hard work of many of our members. It has certainly changed within the industry with over 50 companies joining our membership this past year. It is also starting to change with consumers in the marketplace as well. I hope you have heard the radio campaign that ran this past fall on Sunny 95 and 610 AM. I know consumers and prospective members did. My thanks to Mike Rosati and the PR committee for their hard work in making this happen and also to Ron Wingler who joined Mike in sponsoring this premier edition. I hope you also have taken notice of the new NARI ACE awards. I know 40 members have since we were pleased to hand out these Awards to winners at our Holiday Party and Awards Banquet. With all that has been accomplished in the past two years the natural question is: What are you going to do? I am really only going to do two things. I am going to focus on conveying the importance of what we do and how well we do it. The services our members perform provide jobs, reduce the need for sprawl and improve homes, environments and property values in Central Ohio. We are fortunate to have outstanding businesses active in our association including BBB integrity award winners 10 in the past 10 years. As an industry we need to continue consumer education on making better buying decisions, doing your homework and using our free referral service to get in touch with a NARI member. My second responsibility is to listen. I need to be open and responsive to the needs of the membership. I strongly believe that leadership is service and will work my hardest to represent what is best for the industry as a whole. The hitch here is that I need to know what your feelings, thoughts and concerns are. Keep me informed of what s going on in your businesses and in the marketplace. Your responsibility is to get involved with NARI. Join a committee, attend meeting and roundtable events. Host a meeting at your facility. Share your knowledge with the next generation and help with a study group. Share your successes and your challenges. Don t be shy in telling me how we can help you and I won t be shy in asking for your help. Let s all do our best to keep moving the organization towards the ultimate goal where homeowners will insist on doing business with NARI members. Mike Lange Oberfield's, Inc. & Construction Management Services President, NARI of Central Ohio

9 The Remodelers Connection Page 9 Energy Incentives Become Law The new Energy Bill, which has been passed by Congress and signed into law, contains new tax incentives for sustainable architecture. Below is an explanation of the provisions in the bill that impact the built environment for residential remodeling. Tax Incentives for Existing Homes: The expansive energy bill contains several provisions for energy-efficient improvements to existing homes, heating and cooling equipment, and appliances (as well as fuel cells, microturbines, and solar panels and solar hot water heaters). Specifically, the bill provides homeowners up to $500, including a 10-percent credit for building envelope improvements; $300 credit for energy-efficient central air conditioners, water heaters, and heat pumps; $150 credit for energy-efficient furnaces and boilers; and $50 credit for energy-efficient fans in furnaces. It provides manufacturers with credits up to $175 for increased production of energyefficient refrigerators, clothes washers, and dishwashers. Congratulations to all NARI members who earned the 2005 ACE Award. I want to tell you about some of the success stories that we have had since the ACE Award inception. The awards were presented on Saturday, December 10th. On the Monday following I received a call from a consumer who had filled out a client satisfaction survey for one of our members. The client told me how happy he was with the work of this NARI member and had in the past gotten referrals from another source where they had to pay for the referral. He indicated to me that after filling out the NARI client satisfaction survey and knowing the qualifications we were looking for, and having dealt with this NARI member he was very comfortable calling NARI for a referral for work that this member did not do. It is really great to have consumers calling who are already assured that they will be getting an ethical, trustworthy company to do their work. It has also been a positive member recruiting tool. Several companies have called inquiring about membership after seeing articles in the newspaper about the NARI ACE Awards program ACE Award materials are now available on our website at or by calling the NARI office at (614) If you did not receive the 2005 award, make sure you receive the 2006 award. Charley brings 14 years of experience in the stone industry and will continue his involvement in the BIA, NARI and NKBA. Charley s enjoyment of the building industry extends beyond the work place. 11 The Remodelers Connection Page 11 Increasing Profits By Lorraine Hart, President, Ideal Consulting Services, Inc., , You work so hard, you think you are doing everything right, and yet your profits just don t seem to be where they should be. You have listened to others tell you that you are just too big, or too small. Someone tells you to hire more employees and someone else suggests that you fire everyone and do it all yourself. With all this contradictory advice you don t know where to turn or who to listen to. In order to increase profits you need to look at many aspects of your business. The solution for one business might not be the right course of action for another, and can in fact, create havoc for your company. That is why it can be dangerous to answer this question without studying the individual situation. To properly determine the correct actions you must analyze your income and expenses and know where the income is coming from and where the money is going. That sounds simple, but it involves really understanding your job costs and gross profits. In addition to looking at the overall numbers, you need to find out which types of jobs are the most profitable and which ones are simply not worth doing. There are a few different ways you can increase profits including increasing volume and decreasing costs; however you must do an analysis of your profit and loss statements to determine the best course of action for your unique situation. You also need to know when it would not be beneficial to increase volume. Another solution to increasing profits is a staff incentive program. In his writings on management, L. Ron Hubbard states that If you reward non-production you get non-production. When you penalize production you get nonproduction. Specialize in production and everybody wins. Reward it. You might ask how, or why, would we reward non-production. Unfortunately this occurs when we allow jobs to take too long or we encourage overtime rather than working harder to get the job done on time. By rewarding your staff for doing a quality job and getting it done in less than scheduled time they will continue to produce at this higher level. Properly done, an incentive program will benefit you and your staff in many ways. Your staff will produce more and will be happy with the production bonuses. You will be able to get more work done in a fixed period of time and of course you will be more profitable.
