3 Overview of MitigationMomentum project Focus: Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) Project sponsor: German government (BMU/ICI) Project team: Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN), Ecofys Germany, and local partners Timeline: March 2012 to March 2014 Two tracks: Practical track, helping five countries prepare a concrete NAMA proposal: Kenya, Indonesia, Tunisia, Chile, and Peru Output: concrete NAMA proposal for each of the countries Research track, advancing knowledge and insights for the international community of practice Output: Annual Status Report(s) on NAMAs, and mid-year updates
4 Defining NAMAs Concept established in Bali in 2007 (COP13) Government led action to reduce greenhouse gases in developing countries Emission reductions through short-term projects or measures and/or longer term policies, strategies and research programs Enabled by domestic and/or international financial support Requires a (stringent) measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) scheme, which is contingent on the source of finance NAMAs are an important means of channeling climate change finance!

6 How can Kenya benefit from a geothermal NAMA proposal Firstly, NAMAs can channel climate finance At present there are relatively small climate funds, but they could be the primary channel in the future As early mover, Kenya could be in a better position to access these funds Secondly, the geothermal sector in Kenya needs strengthened efforts due to prevailing barriers, a NAMA could add value to ongoing initiatives
7 Kenya NAMA proposal (draft) work plan Phase I: Phase 2: Phase 3: Background analysis/ report on context and barriers, and initial ideas on interventions (Oct 12 Jan 13) Selection and scope for NAMA proposal, detailed assessment of policy interventions, and elaboration of additional NAMA components (Jan 13 May 13) Detailed design and completion of NAMA proposal, including stakeholder validation (Jun 13 Sep 13) OUTCOMES: Background study Stakeholder validation of background study OUTCOMES: GoK decision on narrowing down the barrier focus (Jan 13) Detailed analysis of building blocks of NAMA proposal Stakeholder workshop to present and validate proposed NAMA components GoK decision on concrete NAMA components (May 13) OUTCOMES: Concrete NAMA proposal Report on lessons learned and guidance for potential replication Final workshop for validation of proposal
