1 Greater Lincolnshire & Peterborough Your Development Manager: or call May/June 2016 MAT AND SARAH IN AWARDS FASTLANE WITH CLASSIC CARS Mat and Sarah Lambkin-Smith from Lincoln were delighted to be invited to the FSB Worldpay awards ceremony in London having won through as finalists in the Best Family Business of the Year category. Although not victorious as final winners on the night they thoroughly enjoyed being part of the competition. The FSB Worldpay awards recognise the crucial role that small businesses play in the UK economy and celebrate the innovation, diversification and social responsibility of those with aspirations for growth. Mat and Sarah s business is S&M Triumph Restoration and they specialise in the restoration of the famous Triumph TR classic cars. The business started in June 2014 and by January 2015 they had moved to larger premises and taken on a fulltime employee and a part-time sub-contractor. They also gained membership of the Guild of Master Craftsmen which recognises the quality of their work and helps them stand out as the only Triumph restorer with this qualification. Many of the parts for these cars are no longer available so the company has invested in machinery to re-manufacture them which supplies additional income from parts sales as well as keeping their own rebuild costs down. 2 Greater Lincolnshire & Peterborough PAGE 2 DRIVING MIDLANDS ENGINE FSB representing Greater Lincolnshire has joined a new business forum that has been established to ensure the business voice is helping to drive forward the Midlands Engine. The Midlands Business Forum brings leading business groups together with local representatives from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), to consider the best way to support business growth across the Midlands. The group will meet biannually to ensure local business has a voice in the development of the Midlands Engine s delivery. The inaugural meeting, chaired by EEF, the manufacturers organisation and involving the CBI, FSB, IOD, the Chambers of Commerce and the Bank of England, took place at the Manufacturing Catapult Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre in Coventry. The move comes at an important time for business, which is currently working hard to ensure continued success against some challenging international trading conditions. According to EEF, almost four in ten manufacturers (36 per cent) identify rising business costs as a key risk this year. At the same time, the proportion of businesses viewing the UK as a competitive place to do business has fallen from 70 per cent in 2015 to 56 per cent this year. Anna Soubry, Minister for Small Business, Industry & Enterprise said: It is great to see the enthusiasm shown by business groups as their contributions are making the Midlands an engine for growth. Ambitious and hardworking businesses are the fuel that powers the Midlands Engine and we are getting behind them so they can create more jobs. Businesses can only operate successfully in a safe and secure environment and it is my belief that this environment is underpinned by the discipline and specialist skills of Reservists. In his role with the Lincolnshire Committee, Stav also organises networking events and visits to military bases for employers to gain first-hand knowledge of what Reservists do behind the scenes. Stav continued: I feel that if employers are given the chance to see Reservists at work in their military roles they will be more aware of the skills they gain through being in the Armed Forces and in turn they will be able to evaluate the benefits this will have on their business. Employer engagement events organised by Stav have also included an Officers Mess dinner at Sobraon Barracks in Lincoln where 18 local businesses were invited to experience what Stav explained as a military way of life.
