2 1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Goal: To develop an innovate plan to address STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) through competitive project- based learning and provide a major middle school educational event underscoring the Borderplex Strategic Recommendation Plan. Incorporate a fundraising strategy to raise $100,000. 3 3.0 COMPETITIONS & FIESTA 3.1 Competitions A) STEAM Challenge Targets: (20) High School Teams and (15) Judges Focus: According to the Borderplex Alliance, Regional Strategic Plan Recommendations Report published in June 2015, there are six target industry sectors identified that provide a high level of opportunity for the Borderplex Region. The Borderplex Alliance Strategic Recommendations report is designed to develop an economic action plan for the El Paso /Cd. Juárez /Southern New Mexico region. Source: strategic- plan Innovative ideas will be categorized in the following target industry sectors: Model: The STEAM Challenge will refocus entrepreneurship and STEAM education through the implementation of the Lean Start Up Model. Source: the- lean- start- up- changes- everything/ar/1 Mentorship Partnership: Engage with the HUB of Human Innovation and UTEP College of Business to allow the STEAM Challenge high school competitors to present their ideas in the Elevator Pitch portion of the College Venture Competition, March 2016 at UTEP. B) VEX ROBOTICS Targets: (24) Teams, (11) Referees and (1) Play by Play Announcer Set up: (3) Fields: Practice, Skills and Competition 2015 VEX Robotics Competition Nothing But Net: Is played on a 12 x12 square field. Two alliances one red and one blue composed of two teams each, compete in matches consisting of a fifteen second autonomous period followed by one minute and forty- five seconds of driver- controlled play. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing Alliance by Scoring your Balls and Bonus Balls in your Low and High Goals, and by Elevating Robots in your Climbing Zone. Details at: resources C) GAMING/IT Targets: (10) Teams and (10) Judges Kodu Playable Game and Planning Design: Students will compete to develop a playable game in Kodu, a free platform. The goal is to inspire youth on the aspects of planning and developing their ideas by creating games. Scoring will be based on their creativity and innovation of game design and planning document which they present to judges at FIESTA. Kodu is a programming integrated development environment by Microsoft s FUSE Labs. It runs on Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows 8. A Windows version is available to the general public for download from Microsoft's FUSE web portal. 3
4 Key Action Items: 1. Create rules and competition design D) CODING Targets: (10) Teams and (10) Judges JAVA: This competition is all about programming skills in JAVA. Teams will face a series of challenges that need to be programmed in Java. The competition will be based on number of challenges completed within a time frame. Each challenge is worth 1 point. Winning teams will be determined by the total number of points. Java is fast, secure, and reliable and used in laptops to datacenters, game consoles to scientific supercomputers, cell phones and Internet. Key Action Items: 1. Create rules and competition design E) HIGH SCHOOL EXHIBITS Targets: (12-20) Exhibits and (5-6) Selection Panel STEMentorship Exhibitors: Solicit high schools for request for proposals for new STEMentorship exhibitors for FIESTA. Teams will be tasked with designing an interactive exhibit that engages middle school students in STEAM. Examples are gaming, coding, robotics, 3D printing. Merging Science with ARTS will also be emphasized. Teams will send in Letter of Intent (LOI) to participate, present concepts and potentially received funding to showcase their exhibits at the Fiesta. Engage T- STEM academy schools to launch STEMentorship model. (Research state science fair circuit Chairman Alcantar- - Winners can go compete in Austin) Key Action Items: 1. Create rules and competition design F) MATH CHALLENGE The Prudential Math Challenge is a math modeling competition that challenges high school students to respond to a real- world problem in real time. An open- ended applied mathematics scenario is presented to students who are allotted 12 hours to draft their solution, using only their peers as resources. No internet access will be allowed. The final three teams will present their results on Friday, April 8, G) LIVING ON MARS This competition invites talented young thinkers to design a house for three astronauts who will live on Mars for one year to conduct experiments. The astronauts are sent to live together as friends while working in the same space. You must design a house that can be airtight and provide a laboratory, as well as living and entertainment space. What is it like to live on a planet where humans cannot breathe the air? Imagine the astronauts cannot go outside to play catch without their space suits. Design an outdoor space where they can be able to breathe freely. Can you provide a home that is comfortable for daily use as well as durable to withstand Mars dust storms? 4

The STEAM Business Leaders Committee, will be determined and be responsible for carrying out implementation. 5.0 OUTREACH Once all competition designs are completed, outreach to high schools and middle schools will begin in late October An official STEAM Awareness poster will be designed and distributed to schools to post. A targeted middle school list of counselor s contact will also be generated. Contact list will be used in concert with youth profile and school criteria, to determine participation tracked by an online registration form for the Fiesta. A STEAM awareness campaign will include KVIA and KCOS partners. Social Media (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter) will also be used to keep communication with youth relevant. Constant Contact newsletter containing relevant STEAM project information, will be developed and distributed monthly/bi- monthly to educators, competitors and key stakeholders. 9
