Today, he is still actively involved with the editorial and art direction of his stable of magazines, and is relentless in his efforts to bring Asian Geographic to new heights. Vice President Rebecca Bisset Rebecca is the publisher of Expat Living Publications. ELP publishes Expat Living magazine and online portal expatliving.sg, one of Singapore s most popular sites today. Honorary Secretary Paul Howell Editorial Director at HRM Asia, Paul s journalism career spans over 10 years, with specialities in online journalism and publishing, as well as editorial leadership. Honorary Treasurer Alex Cano Alex is the owner of a consulting firm, which provides assistance to Singapore companies in setting up businesses in Russia and vice versa. He is also the owner and publisher of Russian Singapore magazine. Committee Member Ho Sum Kwong The founder of MPAS and fondly known as SK in the industry, SK has more than 30 years of publishing experience. Still active at 64, SK is the current Group Publisher of Magazines Integrated Pte Ltd Committee Member Simon Hyett Simon runs BOTR Consultants, a media and content creation business. Simon holds a MA (Syd.) and LLB (Syd) and has more than 16 years as a business and trade editor. He is also the co-founding director of Band on the Run, a leading international entertainment company, which provides customised corporate and private events. Committee Member Tim Charlton Tim is the owner of Charlton Media, which runs the successful and one of the industry s top business-focused media, Singapore Business Review. Tim has more than 20 years of media experience and is known for his strong business acumen and strong leadership. Committee Member Lynda Williams Lynda is the Founder & Managing Director of VIM & VIGOUR PR, a leading boutique communications agency based in Singapore which specialises in travel, wellness and hospitality. Lynda has over 15 years of international experience, working with some of the world s most prestigious travel and wellness brands. 2

3 MEDIA mpas SINGAPORE P R E S I D E N T S M E S S A G E It is my greatest wish to continue the admirable efforts of my predecessors and see the Media Publishers Association Singapore grow further in membership numbers, as well as the media industry across the board. Why be a member after all? Is there a need for such an association? I hope to re-tell our story in a different way and trust that this new path will see ever more industry players gravitate to this association. We will promote your brand/titles more than an individual publisher and protect our own, as it were, in making sure members benefit greatly. My plan is to make this a priority, providing members the advantage and even subsidy to expand and strengthen the businesses. The benefits will be in the area of creating our own digital portal to promote our titles even more, a more cost-efficient distribution and mailing process, a career portal to garner greater support of this industry, licensing opportunities to extend our brands, supported by cash cow strategies like conferences and events in general. Going forward, we also endeavour to up the ante and welcome the region s media as members, who will qualify for the newly launched Asia Pacific Publishing Awards (APPA). Not only do we allow for member growth and networking opportunities for potential expansion, we also open ourselves up to betterment and making more friends while at it. As we improve, so will our judging process, where for certain creativerelated categories, a separate panel of judges is selected. Judges will be those at the top of their game in the specific field the categories are awarded in. This year s submission process will see a change as well, with entrants submitting their entries through our submission portal. Refer to Page 9 Awards Overview for details. APPA Awards are open to all publishers or producers of magazines in South East Asia as an initial stage and will be launched full fledge to include more countries in The MPAS Awards are open to all publishers or producers of magazines in Singapore, whether they are media brand owners, custom media houses, corporate entities, digital media specialists or advertising/pr/marketing agencies. You must be a member to participate. There is no limit to the number of entries per company or individual unless specified in the criteria. Entrants can make multiple submissions to a single category. ENTRY FEES Ordinary memberships are at S$100 for local titles and USD100 for overseas titles. This will include: Free 1st Award entry to MPAS Awards for S$100 Ordinary Membership Free 1st Award entry to *APPA (NEW) Awards for USD100 Ordinary Membership (Asia Pacific Publishing Awards, launched this year 2018) Each additional award entry is at S$100 for local titles and USD100 for overseas titles. *MPAS members must be in good standing, with their annual membership fee paid in full by December 31 of every year. 9 MEDIA SINGAPORE AWARDS 2018 BY APPA 2018 ASIA PACIFIC PUBLISHING AWARDS ASEAN EDITION Selection & process A W A R D S The MPAS Awards 2018 main objective is to recognise the best magazine publishing efforts and professionals in Singapore. The Awards group products into three broad categories: 1. Consumer Magazines (target audience is from the general public) 2. Trade Magazines (target audience is from a particular trade, industry or profession) 3. Digital Media Products (product is available in an online / digital environment or mobile app) The Awards are open to products for which key publishing functions (editorial/content creation, design/production, advertising sales) are performed in Singapore. Locally-licensed editions of international titles or web products are eligible if key publishing functions are performed in Singapore. International titles or web products that are produced outside of Singapore but distributed or accessible here are not eligible. The MPAS and APPA Awards 2018 acknowledge excellence in the following areas: 1. Editorial Content 2. Design & Creativity 3. Photography & Illustration 4. Advertising & Marketing 5. Digital Media 6. Individual Professional Excellence 7. Overall Magazine Standards The Awards will be presented during the annual MPAS Gala Dinner and Awards Night on November 8, 2018 at One Farrer Hotel. Publishers, senior executives from media, press, advertising agencies, PR companies and Government bodies will be invited to attend this event. ENTRY DEADLINE FOR THE AWARDS IS MIDNIGHT, SEPTEMBER 10, 2018 SELECTION PROCESS The eligibility process for the Awards is September 1, 2017 September 1, Magazines/articles must carry a publication date within the eligibility period for entry. In the case of individual awards, the nominating company must have employed the person in their current role for at least six months during the eligibility period. Information or supporting fact regarding the entries below must adhere to the eligibility period. Unless otherwise indicated, all categories are open to entries from Consumer, Trade and Digital magazines. The panel of independent professionals will be chosen by the MPAS Executive Committee to form the judging panel to evaluate the Awards. JUDGING PROCESS Based on the submitted entries, the judges will choose a winner and 2 merit recipient for each Award. Judges will make their decision based on the award criteria articulated within this document. If the judges determine that no entries in a particular category are worthy of an award, then no winner and/or merit recipient will be declared. In such cases, entry fees will not be refunded. SPECIAL AWARD (Based on Overall Point System*) For the PUBLISHER OF THE YEAR and MEDIA COMPANY OF THE YEAR awards, decision is made on a point system allocated to each category. The overall points will then be looked at to decide the winner. For the PUBLISHER OF THE YEAR award, points will be collated from the award groups of Brand, Personality, Product and Digital. For the MEDIA COMPANY OF THE YEAR award, points will be collated from the award group of Branding. The decisions of the judging panels are final. 9
