3 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON The current environment on campuses around the country involving a multitude of issues makes it difficult to have an informed opinion on the real needs of students. However we at the SAIMM know from our experience over many years that there are students in the minerals industry faculties who struggle to pay for prescribed books, accommodation and even day to day food. We are committed to helping albeit in a small way to make the lives of our students just a little better. They are after all the future of our Institute and the minerals industry in South Africa. 4 POTENTIAL MEETS OPPORTUNITY The goal of the Fund is to ensure that no deserving, prospective student or student with potential is denied the opportunity to have a career in the minerals and metals industry as a technically qualified graduate in mining, metallurgy or minerals processing, because of a shortage of finance. The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) Scholarship Fund ( the Fund ) was registered as a trust on 11 November 2002 with registration number IT 6837/02. The Fund operates under the administration of the SAIMM. The Scholarship Fund is a registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO). The principal objects of the Fund are to: (1) Support and promote, foster and advance the interests of the minerals industry by providing the beneficiaries with funds to be used to support the education of students in the minerals industry; (2) To collect monies and accept contributions in monies or otherwise by way of donations, bequests or otherwise and to apply the same or the income therefrom for all or any of the objects set out in (1) above. The beneficiaries of the Fund are the Minerals Education departments in South Africa s institutions of higher learning. Proceeds are used for the benefit of students registered for a professional engineering qualification in mining, metallurgy or minerals processing in these departments. 2

5 One of the key drivers for a successful South African mining industry is a pipeline of quality mining and metallurgy graduates, without whom the sustainability of the industry will be in jeopardy. Students who receive support from the Fund are the future innovators, engineers, and managers who will contribute to maintaining and growing the industry so that it remains a productive sector of South Africa s economy. The Fund does not attempt to provide sufficient funds for the whole of a student s annual requirement but prefers to provide some assistance to a number of students who are using personal or family funds for their education needs. This hopefully assists in attracting and retaining promising students in mining and metallurgy. THEY HAVE THE POTENTIAL. LET S GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY. 7 EXCELLENCE. EVERY DAY, IN EVERY WAY. PROMOTING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE The Fund supports the Universities efforts to improve their retention, pass and graduation rates. This is achieved through the awarding of several scholarship awards to deserving students. The awards for tuition, meals and study supplies reward good study habits and assists young students to spend more of their efforts at study rather than at attempting to earn money to make ends meet. The award for travel and accommodation is intended to promote class attendance thereby improving the retention rates in the Universities. The Fund s financial assistance makes it possible for financially stretched students to be in class every day, and to focus solely on excelling in their studies. 5

The Fund is dependent on contributions from individual members, corporate members and to a large extent the SAIMM itself. Our vision for the Fund is to have every member, every year, contributing into the Fund. Our Goal for 2017 is to raise R through individual members contributions. As a caring member of the Institute, we encourage you to donate as little as R200 to the fund today.
