1 OLD MUTUAL EDUCATION TRUST BACKGROUND The Old Mutual Education Trust (OMET) is an independently registered trust that provides educational benefits to participating union members and their dependents. The Trust was established in recognition of the important role played by a group of trade unions in respect of Old Mutual s business and as part of its broad-based black economic empowerment initiatives. ABOUT THE TRUST The Old Mutual Education Trust was founded by Old Mutual as part of the landmark Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment transaction announced in April It was established to ensure that the proceeds of the Old Mutual BEE deal were directed at empowering the members and dependents of Old Mutual s business partners the trade unions - which represent some of the most disadvantaged persons in South Africa. The participating unions and Old Mutual are of the view that in the long term, education is the most effective economic empowerment vehicle for previously disadvantaged individuals in South Africa. Individuals who have an education are better placed to acquire the skills that will enable them to find work and compete in the ever-changing global economy. The Old Mutual Education Trust uses dividends, from the Old Mutual plc shares it holds, to sponsor tertiary education scholarships for members, spouses and dependents of the participating trade unions. The Trust is governed and operated independently of Old Mutual and the trade unions through an independently registered trust. The Trust is run by a Board of Trustees made up of representative from participating trade unions, Old Mutual and independent members.
