4 The Cove Waterpark, located at the corner of Mission Boulevard and Camino Real, reopens for the summer season on Saturday, May 25th. Buy your season pass online (the Discount Season Pass Sale is April 6 for one day only) and get in a day early on Friday, May 24th. The rates remain the same as last year. The pirate-themed water park is owned and operated by the Riverside County Regional Park and Open Space District. It features attractions for people of all ages such as a wave rider, lazy river, waterslides, and a toddler water play area called the Lil Mates Lagoon", which includes a small water slide and tipping buckets! Swimming lessons will also be offered at the Cove this summer beginning June 10 and running through the end of August. Weekday and weekend sessions are planned to make sure everyone has an opportunity to learn this important life-saving skill. If your child does not know how to swim, you need to take action. If your child can swim but wants to improve their strokes, check out this program. Our experienced instructors can help. Check out their website for more information on classes, summer passes, group rates as well as summer employment opportunities at the Cove!!! If you know an individual or family who needs assistance, please call or stop by the Rubidoux Family Resource Center. Their facility is located at 5473 Mission Blvd., Jurupa Valley or they can be reached by phone at (951) nd District Non-Profit Spotlight: Inspire Life Skills Imagine being eighteen years old and left on your own with no family or support system around you? Usually when young adults venture out into the real world" they have the safety net of having their parents just a phone call (or ATM) away. Unfortunately, for thousands of aged-out foster youth in Riverside County that is not their real world. They are usually left to figure out the future on their own. Do they want to attend college? If so, which college is right for them? What should they study? How will they pay for it? Where will they live? Where will they work? How can they afford to eat and buy clothes and shoes while they are in school? These are things many college age kids take for granted. For aged-out foster kids these obstacles can be insurmountable. As a result 65% of former foster youth end up homeless after leaving their foster home care. The young women are 6 times more likely than their peers to give birth before the age of 21. The young men face a daunting 25% incarceration rate. Only 6% of foster youth attempt to attend college and only 2% complete a degree. These statistics are dismal and are a clear indication that something has to be done for these young people. Enter Inspire Life Skills! Did you know that there is a private, non-profit organization in the Inland Empire that focuses on stabilizing and teaching valuable life skills to foster youth ages 18-23? Inspire Life Skills Training (AKA Inspire") was founded in 2005 and has helped approximately 60 former foster youth create a better future for themselves. Inspire has six homes and offers youth the opportunity to attend college full-time while living in a community with one another. These young men and women receive one-on-one mentoring from local volunteers and professionals who provide pro-bono counseling though the California Baptist University Counseling Department and Loma Linda Behavioral Health Institute. They also attend life skills classes that are taught by experts in their field. Inspire would not be a success without the many generous donors and volunteers that give their time and resources to help these youth break the cycle of poverty and abuse in their families. Inspire has seen youth go on to attend Law School, become teachers and marriage family therapists, and many other productive members of our community. There are many ways that you too can be involved in giving hope to local foster youth. Please check out Inspire s website at to see how you can volunteer or become a financial partner. They are currently seeking sponsors for their upcoming fundraisers. Please Kristi@inspirelifeskills.org or call for more information. Page 4 of 10
5 Critter Kiddz Summer Camp Week 1: July 15-19, 2013 Week 2: July 22-26, 2013 Learning kindness towards animals and all living things is an important part of child development. Humane education fosters empathy, caring and a sense of responsibility in our youth. To this end, Riverside County Department of Animal Services has developed our Critter Kiddz Summer Camp to offer weeks of fun filled animal related activities. At Kiddz Camp, children learn about pet care, respect for all animals from dogs and cats to reptiles, wildlife and conservation of habitats, pet training and more. Some of the activities include making cast molds of animal prints, dissecting owl pellets, learning dog bite prevention with gigantic Saint Bernard breed dogs, llama training, and dog agility training. In addition to dogs and cats, children have had the opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of animals such as miniature horses, large boas and pythons, lizards, tortoises, stick insects, giant hissing roaches, rabbits, rats and llamas. Participants will also enjoy the benefits of exposure to many guest speakers from the shelter and in the community, who will share their experiences working in careers with animals. In the past two years our camp has been very successful with more participants signing up as the word gets out. The Riverside County Department of Animal Services plans to extend the camp to make room for more children this summer, as well as add new programs throughout the year, such as a Spring Break camp. For further information or to register, contact Kim McWhorter at (951) or by at kmcwhort@rivcocha.org. County Waste Department to Provide Free Composting Workshop in Highgrove on April 13 The Riverside County Waste Management Department will host a free backyard composting workshop in Highgrove on Saturday, April 13. Attend this how-to" workshop to learn how to recycle organic resources such as yard trimmings, fruit and vegetable waste into a dark, crumbly, sweet-smelling soil conditioner. Compost can be used to enrich the soil in gardens, lawns and house plants. Instead of putting organic waste in the garbage to be hauled to the landfill, learn to compost! The free how-to" backyard composting workshop begins at 10 a.m. at the Norton Younglove Community Center, 459 Center Street. The Riverside County Waste Management Department provides this free workshop in an effort to divert waste and help preserve valuable landfill space in the county s sanitary landfills. For years, the department has trained volunteer master composters that explain how to create compost easily and efficiently from ordinary organic wastes. Low-cost compost bins, subsidized by the department, will also be available for purchase by Riverside County residents (limit three per household). County residents can purchase compost bins by personal check only, cash and credit cards will not be accepted. For more information, contact the Riverside County Waste Management Department at (951) or visit Around the Second District Page 5 of 10
