2 GUIDELINES ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION: You are required to register for examinations / assignments within the above given period. Assignments will not be accepted if you have not registered for the exam/assignment. Assignments should be submitted to SLIM within the Assignment Submission Periods indicated above. Assignments will not be accepted after the late submission period under any circumstances. SLIM will issue an acknowledgement slip upon the submission of your assignment and it must be retained by the student as proof of submitting the assignment. ASSIGNMENT COVER PAGE: Attached cover page format should be used, printed in the relevant colour (Stage 1- Blue/Stage 2-Green/ Stage 3-Pink). THE ASSIGNMENT MARKING SHEET should be attached after the cover page followed by the Assignment checklist & declaration form. A SOFT COPY of your assignment should be sent to the above mentioned address for which you will receive an automated reply of receipt of the assignment. If you have not received the automated reply, please verify with course coordinator. The soft copy is only a reference document that will not be considered as an assignment submission. IMPORTANT NOTES If you have not submitted the assignment" your results for the respective subject will appear as Fail in the final grading. In case of absence at the examination, the student has to re-do the assignment in order to pass the subject in the next examination. If you are a student of an Accredited Study Centre, you can submit the assignment to the accredited study centre and presentation date and time will be notified to the centre once all assignments are received by SLIM Home and SLIM web site. Present university students are allowed to submit the assignment without attending lectures since they register as self-study students. However, they have to attend individual presentation sessions. 3 Trends in Corporate Social Responsibilities and Ethical Initiations BACKGROUND Corporate management across the globe has its focus on CSR and ethical demands. This has particularly brought the attention of employees and public to make a noise against any nonethical and irresponsible behaviour of organizations. Highlighted below are a few contexts noticed recently, which enlightened the perspective towards the trends in CSR and ethics. Context 1 - Silicon Valley firms are facing anger from a new source: Their own employees A few weeks ago, employees at Salesforce.com completed a task that's becoming common in Silicon Valley. They protested. Thousands of tech knowledge workers from top companies, including Google, Amazon and Microsoft have recently led large-scale internal rebellions against their employers. The wave of employee outrage is largely over the use of companies technology in controversial government contracts from facial recognition software sold to law enforcement, to drone technology for the military and work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. For an industry with a history of outsized CEOs making bold, unilateral decisions, the recent employee uprisings show how much Silicon Valley and its top executives are being forced to adapt to a changing era. Historically, tech employees knowledge workers have rarely challenged executives on ethical grounds. Employee loyalty is also enforced by a thick layer of nondisclosure agreements. Dissenting tech knowledge workers can voice concerns and opinions, but in doing so are simultaneously at the risk of termination. There is no free speech in the private workplace. Atwill employment gives companies the power to fire employees for virtually any reason aside from discrimination. But tech employees are increasingly finding that public attention on some subjects of gravity is an effective cudgel against the historical strength of corporate management. Context 2 - Launching Sprite-Zero in the local market: Coca Cola News Buoyed by the success of its sugar-free drink Coke Zero, Coca-Cola Sri Lanka is now set to launch Sprite Zero. 3

4 Speaking about the launch, Managing Director of Coca-Cola Beverages Sri Lanka Ltd, said We re evolving our long-term business strategy to give the people of Sri Lanka the beverages they want. To do that we re reducing sugar and calories across many of our brands. Our launch of Sprite Zero has come just six-months after the very successful introduction of Coke Zero, which offers the same great Coca-Cola taste with zero sugar. We are very pleased by the strong consumer response and high rates of conversion, from trials to repurchase of Coca-Cola Zero. We are confident that Sprite Zero will be embraced by Sri Lankans in a similar fashion. The students are expected to read and understand both contexts and answer the tasks given below. TASK ONE Analyze the message which has been conveyed to the public by tech employees in Silicon Valley by raising their concerns against the unethical initiations of corporates. GUIDELINE NOTE 01 Students may examine, analyze and discuss aspects such as the criticalness of the highlighted unethical initiation of tech corporates, timely approach taken by tech-employees, current limitations in freedom for employees to stand against corporate unethical behavior, etc. TASK TWO Coca Cola Company is operated with the mission To refresh the world in mind, body and spirit. To inspire moments of optimism and happiness through our brands and actions. Evaluate the launch of Sprite-zero in light of having the above mission GUIDELINE NOTE TWO Students are expected to understand the mission of Coca Cola, its value propositions and evaluate the company s intention to launch Sprite-zero. Further, students need to verify whether the intention is in-line with the publicized mission. TASK THREE It could be the trend that the philosophy of total corporate social responsibility getting embedded into companies product portfolios - Evaluate this statement with suitable examples. 4
