2 Computer Corner Why Secure a Wireless Network? By Kim Komando More skilled crooks could use packet sniffers to read your communications. That includes IP addresses as well as information being sent. I frequently stress the necessity of wireless network security. That means controlling access to your router if at home and using encryption. Recently I've received questions akin to, "What's the worst that can happen?" So let's look at the dangers of leaving your home network unprotected. Trust me; it's much worse than learning the meaning of Wi-Fi Protected Access! Most wireless routers are completely unprotected out of the box. That makes the initial setup easy. But some people simply rush to the Internet. Who has time for that silly security stuff? Wi-Fi stealing is common So what can happen? Most common is the problem of Wi-Fi freeloaders. Wireless signals are often strong enough to reach the neighbors. They can get free Internet access by joining your network. There's nothing simpler. When a computer boots, Windows can identify networks within range. Furthermore, it will tell freeloaders whether the networks are encrypted. If yours is not, it is fair game. Freeloaders can slow down your Internet connection. Worse, they might get you into trouble if their activities are illegal. Police might trace their surfing back to you. Things can get much worse More skilled crooks could use packet sniffers to read your communications. That includes IP addresses as well as information being sent. For example, messages generally are open to eavesdropping. Some passwords also might be intercepted. The worst is a man-in-the-middle attack. With information gained from eavesdropping, hackers can play tricks on your network. In this type of attack, your router is fooled to recognize the hacker as you. Simultaneously, your computer is fooled to recognize the hacker's PC as the router. The result: Everything g o e s t hr o u g h t h e hacker the man in the middle. Data is wide open Information you send over your network or the Internet is up for grabs. In most cases, encrypted data could not be read. But unencrypted information would be open, and could be altered. Your machine could be used to distribute viruses or illegal material. Infections could be fed directly to you. You can stop a world of trouble by securing your network. It's easier than cleaning malware from your PC. And it is certainly easier than restoring a stolen identity. Take a look at my tip on securing a wireless network. Take ownership of your privacy and your Internet connection. And speaking of security, we have lots of free software here at Komando.com. It s updated continuously. Check it now to see what you may be missing. Copyright 2007 WestStar TalkRadio Network. Reprinted with permission. 4 Covenants Corner - Mobile Home Season With the spring and summer season approaching the weather will bring some outdoor season fun! That means camping and fishing! The covenants states that mobile trailer cannot be parked within the community for more than 24 hours at any given time. T o p r e - clude any covenants violations, place a simple call Hughes Properties, Inc or them to let them know that your trailers, recreational vehicles, mobile homes, motor homes, or boats will be parked in your driveway for a period of time. That courtesy call may save you letters and fines associated with violations. It s smart to be proactive and the dialog helps preclude any misunderstandings. Thank You! Call Hughes Properties to let them know if it will be around longer! Page 4
5 Madison Animal Shelter Fundraising/Vet Fund for Madison A.R.F Did you know that Madison has an animal shelter located behind City Hall? Madison s Animal Control officers strive to find the lost and abandoned pets in the city. If the animal remains unclaimed after 7 days then they will try to find them new homes. If you've lost your pet or would like to adopt a new one, please come to the Police Department and they will be happy to assist you. All animals in the City are required to be licensed and before adoption you must agree to have the animal spayed or neutered. Neighborhoods can really be helpful if they served as their own 'animal control'. Meaning, if a lost pet or animal wandering around the neighborhood and it looks familiar, lock it up in their garage or otherwise contain it and ask around before calling animal control. A.R.F is desperately trying to reduce the kill rate in Madison and could succeed with the help of the local residents. Please exercise care when approaching unknown animals. If you have questions please call or if you have an emergency regarding loose animals please call Fundraising Leaders: Want to help?
