26 Sport s England Community Asset Fund Improve and protect existing sports facilities that support the needs of local communities Invest in new and different places that meet the needs of local communities, which include Sport England s target audiences e.g. under-represented groups such as women, older people, disabled people and people from lower socio-economic backgrounds Ensure their capital investment reaches organisations who have not accessed their funding before Create a more resilient, sustainable, less grant dependent sport sector

27 Key Facts: Value: 15 million per annum Anticipated size of bids: 1,000 to 150,000 Open all the time. There s no deadlines Shorter and more simplified application. They want to keep the information you have to provide in the first instance to a minimum. No supporting information initially. They will only ask for supporting information when they have made an in-principle decision after the assessment of your application. It s just about your project. The information they will ask for is the information you know - the details of your organisation, your project, the need for your project, beneficiaries and how you will make your project happen.

28 Examples of what the Community Asset Fund will fund: Organisations looking to take over an underused sports facility or one under threat of closure Organisations wanting to expand or improve the sporting experience you offer your customers e.g. looking to improve a changing room or installing new toilets, heating system or social space Responding to an emergency or unexpected event that is stopping people from being active e.g. fix a roof that s been damaged or repair an area after flood damage

29 Examples of what the Community Asset Fund won t fund: Revenue-only projects Routine maintenance and repairs resulting from wear and tear Children s playgrounds and play equipment Projects intended for private gain Retrospective funding Projects they ve funded in the past Football only projects Small-scale cricket projects - Pitch covers, Kitchen and social area, Energy/water consumption and flood defence measures.

30 Sport England expect their typical awards; 1. Small-scale investments typically ranging from 1,000 to 15,000. These will address emergency works due to something like storm or flood damage, or something totally unexpected that is stopping people from being able to stay active right now. 2. Medium-scale investments typically ranging from between 15,000 to 50,000. These will address more substantial changes. This might be an upgrade to an existing facility or developing a new space in the community. 3. By exception, Sport England will consider larger investments ranging from 50,000 to 150,000. This will be when organisations can demonstrate a considerable impact or are targeting under-represented groups, and not previously received SE funding

31 Top 10 Tips when Applying for Funding 1. Be clear about your funding requirements before making an application e.g. ensure selection criteria for the funding scheme fits the aims and objectives of your project some funders don t fund certain organisations so it s important to check 2. Be aware of funding deadlines and ensure it is submitted before the deadline 3. Do not start work on your project until funding has been granted Most funding bodies do not cover retrospective funding

32 4. Does your organisation/project have any internal funds it can contribute some funders prefer organisations that can contribute something themselves 5. Check how big the overall funding pot is. From this information you can analyse the potential / likelihood of success 6. Once you ve found a potential fund, speak to someone from the organisation and discuss the outline of your project. Check whether this would be something they would consider 7. Read all of the guidance notes and funding criteria

33 8. Be clear and concise you only have a few words to get your project across to the funder. Include as much relevant information as possible, but do not write excessive amounts/waffle - First impressions last! 9. Ensure all relevant sections are completed and signed by the appropriate people and ensure the application has the correct contact details for the funder to get in touch with you and the school/project 10. Call the funder to check that they ve received it, and liaise with them where necessary, completing any extra requests promptly
