2012 Grant Application General Information Project title: EcoMovie Nights Sponsoring Organization/Fiscal Agent: ASUC Sustainability Team (STeam) For Sponsoring Organization/Fiscal Agent, please submit a completed Project Approval form. Project Approval forms will not be counted toward your application page limit. Total amount requested from TGIF: $2420 Amount Requested as: Grant Loan (Estimated payback period of loan in months: ) How did you hear about this grant? We heard of this grant through the TGIF presentation at one of the STeam general meetings, and by word of mouth. Project Description 1. Please give a brief history of this project/your organization. Describe the overall purpose (goals) of the project. Our vision for EcoMovie Nights is to create a monthly environmental documentary series that engages, educates and inspires the campus community, especially undergraduate students, to get involved in various environmental issues through the showcase of critically acclaimed environmental documentaries. Admission is free and food is prepared for free and/or cheaply sold. Movies are carefully selected based on a monthly theme to offer depth in specific environmental issues and inspirational values. At the end of each screening, there will be a discussion facilitated by students from environmental organizations on campus and all participants are encouraged to stay to reflect on the movie. The idea for this program occurred during the planning stages of a documentary screening that STeam was organizing in November The planning group realized the potential that documentary screenings had to entertain, educate and help connect those who were not involved in environmental student groups with groups that needed their help. STeam officially 1
formed an EcoMovie committee in February 2011 that met every week since then to plan the first pilot EcoMovie and build the EcoMovie Nights program. The EcoMovie Nights program debuted on March 1st, 2012 with the screening of Waste Land, in conjunction with UC Berkeley s first time participation in the nation wide RecycleMania competition. This first pilot EcoMovie attracted about 60 students. Students were both entertained and informed by our movie, which was selected because of its relevance to our theme of waste awareness and reduction, its critical acclaim, and its inspirational qualities. We sold pizza for one dollar per slice, and STeam s One Side Clean project group offered free waste reducing one side clean notebooks to interested viewers while they were waiting in line. It was a great success because the students enjoyed the movie and were very interested in returning for more EcoMovie nights, and other sustainable events. The second pilot EcoMovie will be on April 20 th, 2012 during Earth Week, with the screening of A Sea Change. By the end of this semester, the committee will be able to properly create the EcoMovie program structure for the coming year using knowledge gained from two pilot EcoMovie Nights. 2. What will be the process for implementing your project? Describe the key components and steps of your project. A small EcoMovie committee within STeam will be responsible for organizing and executing the EcoMovie events, and ensuring the program runs smoothly during the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters. Before each semester starts, the committee will predetermine the EcoMovie schedule and decide upon which movies to screen and where the screenings will be located. Different environmental student groups and decals on campus that often hold their own movie screenings will be invited to collaborate and provide suggestions to the EcoMovie schedule. The committee will use TGIF funds to pay for the screening rights for all the films at the beginning of each semester, and prescreen the films a week or two before each EcoMovie screening to create appropriate discussion questions. Student organizations working on projects or campaigns that relate to the topic of the upcoming EcoMovie will be invited to help lead the discussion and/or speak before or after the film. It will be important to have food at each EcoMovie, so the steering committee will retain communication with Cheese Board and other vendors who are willing to donate food/snacks to the screenings. Publicizing the EcoMovie Nights program will occur at the beginning of each semester and two weeks before each EcoMovie. Publicity materials such as fliers and large posters will also be designed, printed and posted at the beginning of each semester. The EcoMovie schedule will be publicized to environmental courses, environmental decal courses, and other student organizations. All of STeam will help publicize each EcoMovie starting two weeks before the screening by making classroom announcements, ing teachers, and adding friends to the Facebook event. On the day of each EcoMovie, a group of around 4 5 volunteers will be responsible for bringing Cheese Board pizza and other snacks to the screening. There will also be a few volunteers at 2
each screening to help set up and clean up before and after each screening. After each EcoMovie screening, the EcoMovie committee will reflect upon the attendance and effectiveness of the event and make appropriate notes for improvement. We have been collaborating with Nolan Pack, leader of the pending TGIF grant for the Student Sustainability Resource Center (SSRC), and have come to a mutual agreement that the films from the EcoMovie program should be permanently stored in an Environmental Films Library in the SSRC, should it be built. All UC Berkeley students will be allowed to borrow the films and the committee will put publicity materials about the Environmental Films Library in Moffit s Film Library and especially publicize to residence halls so they can also borrow these films for residence hall movie nights. Metrics and Measurability 3. Which aspects of campus sustainability will your project address, and why is addressing these sustainability components important? Does your project tie into any current campus sustainability initiatives or help the campus reach specific sustainability goals? How does your project go above and beyond the requirements already mandated by UC Berkeley and/or state law? Our program aims to inform and inspire students about a wide range of environmental issues. Beyond education, we present concrete ways in which they can get involved about the issues illustrated by the film. For example, our film about waste, Waste Land, was screened during RecycleMania, so a representative from the Campus Recycling and Refuse Service in charge of working on RecycleMania told the audience about the competition and how they could participate. We also provided information about other environmental initiatives on campus that they could join or support. In essence, this program will complement and enhance current campus environmental efforts, and inspire the students to understand the necessity of campus sustainability. Informing students about sustainability issues and helping them get involved is a key component of our project, and an overarching goal of almost all environmental student groups that work on various campus sustainability goals. Specifically, the EcoMovie program is especially geared towards education and awareness towards goals that the University of California has put for itself such as the Zero Waste by 2020, Greenhouse Gas Reduction to 1990 levels by 2014 and water reduction goals. 4. What quantifiable sustainability impacts will your project have and what will be the cost savings to the campus? How will you measure these impacts after your project is implemented in order to see if you have met your goal(s)? One of the most important goals of the EcoMovie program is to provide a fun, routine event where students outside of the environmental student group community will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with other students in the community. Films that will most likely inspire or motivate students to get involved with groups on campus will be chosen for the 3
EcoMovie program. The number of people who sign up to attend the event on Facebook, the number of students who attend each EcoMovie night and the number of new students who sign up to get involved with environmental student groups will quantify our success. Since we also want these environmental films to be available for other UC Berkeley students to enjoy, the number of people or groups that contact us about borrowing the film will also measure the success of the program. Project Education, Outreach, and Publicity Plan Note: This section is about letting the campus know what your project has accomplished after you ve met your project goals. If outreach and education are the primary goals of your project and you have sufficiently answered these questions in the Project Description and Metrics & Measurability sections, you may leave these questions blank. 5. What is your plan for publicizing your project on campus? In addition to TGIF, who will you report your information to? See answer to question #2. 6. Do you have any specific outreach goals? If so, how will they be measured? See answer to question #4. Project Approvals (Projects will not be considered without the relevant approvals). 7. Do any aspects of your project require approval from an entity on or off campus? If so, please explain. (For example, a project which affects campus grounds or buildings must be approved by the Vice Chancellor for Facilities Services) For each described entity, please submit a completed Project Approval form. Project Approval forms will not be counted toward your application page limit. The only approval we need is from Jan Crowder, who is the ASUC Director of Student Affairs and the official advisor for STeam. Project Team 8. Please identify the project leader(s) as well as the member of the project team responsible for reporting TGIF project updates (if different from the project leader). For each entity listed, please submit a completed Project Approval form. If you want to list additional team members, please add the entries. Additional team member information will not count toward your page limit. Name Judy Li Title and department Director, ASUC Sustainability Team (until Fall 2012) Project Role Founder Phone (858)

If your project team is partnering with other organizations, departments, individuals, or other stakeholders, please explain their involvement and include their contact information. For each named entity, please submit a completed Project Approval form. Project Approval forms will not be counted toward your application page limit. We are currently collaborating with Nolan Pack nolanpack@gmail.com, the leader of the Student Sustainability Resource Center (currently pending TGIF funding), about creating an Environmental Films Library in the SSRC to permanently store the films after they have been screened through the EcoMovie program. A representative from CALPIRG will be arranged through contacting Lily Adams lilly.a@berkeley.edu, and the Berkeley Student Food Collective outreach@foodcollective.org will also be invited to collaborate on the films for the EcoMovie program because these two groups are known to host occasional documentary screenings. 10. How much of your project will students be involved in? What roles will students play in your project? Does your project target involvement of a certain section of the student body? 5
The EcoMovie program will mainly be organized by students in STeam and with some collaboration with other environmental student groups. All UC Berkeley students are invited to attend the EcoMovie screenings for free and encouraged to get involved with other sustainability groups on campus. We especially hope to attract underclassmen interested in environmental issues who are not already involved in the environmental student group community. These students who are not in the community may become interested in joining a group or just learning about the different sustainability events and initiatives on campus. Each film shown in the EcoMovie program will be made available for all UC Berkeley students to borrow for free after it has been screened, so that its educational value to the campus continues. The committee will work with Moffit Library s Film Resource Center to advertise the growing Environmental Films Library and/or house the Environmental Films Library in the Film Resource Center if the SSRC does not get built. The large audience screening rights that we purchase for some films might only be allowed to be used once, but the film can always be shown casually to smaller groups as many times as desired. Budget 11. List all budget items for which funding is being requested under the appropriate category. Include cost and total amount for each item requested. Please be as detailed as possible. (Insert additional rows if necessary). If you have price quotes from vendors or additional historical budget information for projects that have occurred previously or are on going, please submit those with this application. What is your strategy for supporting the project after this initial period to cover replacement, operational, and renewal costs? All the costs listed in the budget above, except those for speakers, are operational costs of the EcoMovie Nights that will still require funding after its initial period. We plan on perfecting the program during its initial first year using TGIF funding. STeam will continue to organize the EcoMovie Nights program in the future, and its future operational costs will come from STeam s budget. The committee will work with ASUC Senate and Financial Committee to help ensure that STeam receives enough funding each year to continue the program in the future. 13. 9 Appendix List of some EcoMovie options for academic year that we plan to show: 1. The City Dark Description: The City Dark is a feature documentary about the loss of night. After moving to NYC from rural Maine, filmmaker Ian Cheney asks a simple question do we need the stars? taking him from Brooklyn to Mauna Kea, Paris, and beyond. Exploring the threat of killer asteroids in Hawaii, tracking hatching turtles along the Florida coast, and rescuing injured birds on Chicago streets, Cheney unravels the myriad implications of a globe glittering with lights including increased breast cancer rates from exposure to light at night, and a generation of kids without a glimpse of the universe above. Featuring stunning astrophotography and a cast of eclectic scientists, THE CITY DARK is the definitive story of light pollution and the disappearing stars Fuel Director Josh Tickell takes us along for his 11 year journey around the world to find solutions to America's addiction to oil. A shrinking economy, a failing auto industry, rampant unemployment, an out of control national debt, and an insatiable demand for energy weigh heavily on all of us. Fuel shows us the way out of the mess we're in by explaining how to replace every drop of oil we now use, while creating green jobs and keeping our money here at home. The film never dwells on the negative, but instead shows us the easy solutions already within our reach Blue Gold Water Wars Wars of the future will be fought over water as they are over oil today, as the source of human survival enters the global marketplace and political arena. Corporate giants, private investors, and corrupt governments vie for control of our dwindling supply, prompting protests, lawsuits, and revolutions from citizens fighting for the right to survive. Past civilizations have collapsed from poor water management. Can the human race survive? worldwaterwars.com/ 9
