Website: The Center for Community-Based & Nonprofit Organizations at Austin Community College serves the nonprofit sector of its area (and throughout the State of Texas) by applying its principles of Strategic Creativity to all its operations. The Center engages individuals to add value to the nonprofit enterprise by leveraging their talents and resources for the benefit of the sector. The result is an ever growing array of services and products which are largely free or very low cost to the recipient. The provider enjoys the pleasure and reward of having added value to our society. If your life works you influence your family. If your family works, your family influences the community. If your community works, your community influences the nation. If your nation works, your nation influences the world. If your world works, the ripple effect spreads throughout the cosmos. (Lao Tzu's Tau Te Ching) Starting its fourth year of offering (largely) free learning opportunities, the Center has provided about hour or longer learning opportunities to about 4000 distinct individuals from over 3000 separate community-based and nonprofit organizations by engaging over 180 pro bono session leaders. Session by session evaluations reflect a 95% customer satisfaction rate. The actual expenditure to date is estimated to be $200,000 for which an estimated $2 million in social value has been created and 98% of the time the Center s resources are available free. The Center works collaboratively with: the Austin Young Lawyers Association to provide a series on Nonprofit Legal Issues for which lawyers receive MCLE credit and during which nonprofit practitioners and lawyers; the Public Relations Society of America, Austin Chapter to provide a six-session, 21 hour, Strengthening Your Nonprofits Public Relations series; the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Austin Chapter, and Dietlind Smith Inc. to provide monthly (national) AFP audio conferences on fundraising topics; and several other local, regional and national entities. The Center administers the Texas Association of Nonprofit Organizations (TANO) which advocates for and represents the Nonprofit Sector of Texas. Page 1 of 4 as of 12:52 PM3/20/2004

First published as part of the Adult Literacy Organizational Training Project grant the Center was given by the Texas Education Agency, the Manual is a major resource for nonprofit staff and volunteers. These include: Conflict to Cooperation, A Process for Mediating Group Differences, book by Garry McDaniel, Ed.D. in collaboration with Barry Silverberg; Nonprofit Public Relations Toolkit, A Basic Introduction to Public Relations by Debbie Mason; The Courage to Lead, An Essential Guide for Volunteer Leaders, Board Trustees, and Public Servants by Robert A. Floyd, CAE; Get Things Done, Ten Secrets of Creating and Leading Exceptional Teams by Brad Fregger; One Shovel Full, Telling Stories to Change Beliefs, Attitudes and Perceptions by Brad Fregger; and Thinking Strategically Within Nonprofits by Michael Dore in collaboration with Barry Silverberg. Also, under this ALOTP grant, Linda Young, Special Assistant to the President for Governmental and Community Relations at ACC, and Barry Silverberg, Center Director, co-produced a multi-hour DVD (or VHS) entitled Strengthening Your Nonprofit: A Literacy Case Study which explores strategic thinking and planning, effective boards, volunteer engagement and public relations.
