A number of projects are being studied and developed throughout the continent. According to the World Bank, Sub-Saharan Africa has an installed generation capacity of only 90 gigawatts (GW), less than the capacity of South Korea, while its hydroelectric potential alone is an estimated 300 GW. According to the IEA World Energy Outlook 2014, around 620 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa (two thirds of Africans) still have no access to electricity. In parallel, technical innovations allow to improve performance, to enhance energy efficiency and to develop customer services. Africa's water resources represent untapped potential. Africa only uses 5.5% of the 3,400 billion cubic metres of renewable water which it has access to each year (FAO, Aquastat 2015), and 319 million Africans (35% of the population) live with no access to drinking water (WHO/ Unicef).
