1 Project Odakniwa 5 year plan Sustainable Agriculture Project Odakniwa Directors in Charge: German Curiqueo and Marcelo Antinao Create a productive, sustainable farm community whose quality products are sought throughout the region and marketed by direct trade with other countries through collaboration with Veterinarians Without Borders, Ecoescuela El Manzano and The College of Wooster. Take inventory and assess the community farms and identify challenges and needed resources. Conduct workshops that address agricultural challenges, develop permaculture plans and support farmers in the field. Develop an animal loan and training program to provide larger animals, veterinary care and training. Identify resources to implement the permaculture plans. Create a community business plan and identify markets and resources for creating agricultural related products. Develop direct trade opportunities. Establish the Paillao Mapu Cooperative that packages markets and distributes the community s agricultural and agricultural based products to the region and beyond through direct trade. Share our expertise with other communities. Sustainable Construction and Appropriate Technology Project Odakniwa Directors in Charge: Marcelo Antinao and Hans Curiqueo Develop a skilled construction workforce with expertise in energy efficiency and renewable energy in the community. Develop a community construction apprenticeship program through collaboration with the Universidad de Mayor Continuing Education program. Conduct Circuits and Solar Workshops for community members in collaboration with the Appropriate Technology Collaborative (ATC). Intermediate Outcome Complete the construction of Paillao Mapu Ruka and Hostel through the construction apprenticeship program to serve as a demonstration project for sustainable design and construction. Long Term Outcome

2 Support the creation of community based businesses to develop and build sustainable projects within the community and throughout the region. Cultural Arts Preservation and Promotion Project Odakniwa Director in Charge: Deborah Carrasco Create a thriving community artisan group that preserves traditional arts & crafts and explores new artistic expressions through collaboration with the Universidad Catolica de Temuco School of Design and Chol Chol Foundation. Conduct design workshops in the community for all ages with the School of Design. Create a mentorship program for young artisans. Establish an artisan gallery in the Paillao Mapu Ruka. Create opportunities for local artisans to display their work in local galleries and cafes. Use the Paillao Mapu Cooperative to market artisan art & crafts via direct fair trade markets. Language Preservation and Promotion Project Odakniwa Director in Charge: Christopher Culbertson and Deborah Carrasco To provide language training for community members in order to facilitate Mapudungun language preservation and promote educational and entrepreneurial opportunities through English Language classes and practice. Short term outcomes Establish a library and language lab within the community center for accessing technology for multiple language courses. Organize Language Study Groups and informal social gatherings for community members to practice and speak their traditional language. (Mapudungun) Apply for grants to provide Mapudungun classes and language camps within the community. Partner with International English World Language Centers to provide youth and adult English for Interpersonal Skills classes within the community at no cost to community members. Organize informal English activities such as movie nights, games, etc. Promote multi-cultural and intergenerational education and exchange in three languages, Mapudungun, English and Spanish. Intermediate term outcomes Community members will be able to engage with Project Odakniwa volunteers from English speaking countries through homestays, hostel activities

3 Community members will be able to share their stories with volunteers and professionals from English speaking countries. (English) Community members will be able to practice and speak their traditional language in Language Study Groups and informal social gatherings.(mapudungun) Community members will be able to engage with the elder (fluent) members of the community promoting a multi-generational community exchange. (Mapudungun) Long term outcomes Community members engage in cultural and educational tourism through the establishment of a community owned hostel and programs with multiple universities and study abroad programs. Community members of all ages are able to improve their higher education prospects and job opportunities by becoming bi-lingual. Community members will be able to share their traditional language with visitors from outside the community and explain its structure. Community members will teach the next generation of community members the traditional language and use it to converse in the community. Intercultural Education and Collaboration Project Odakniwa Director in Charge: Christopher Culbertson/Heidi Strike Foster dialogue and cultural exchange between Paillao Mapu, the City of Temuco, the Chilean government and the larger global community. Two College of Wooster students have already worked with community members as part of their Junior/Senior Thesis Project. We will continue to support similar student research. Complete the design of Paillao Mapu Ruka and Hostel, as a center for educational tourism and multi-cultural dialogue. Establish a formal distance exchange program between community children and youth and Honey Creek Community School, Ann Arbor, MI using Skype and an pal program. Promote an exchange program between the College of Wooster and Universidad de Mayor where students can conduct research and volunteer in the community. Implement a formal exchange program with the College of Wooster through the Wooster Volunteer Network. Partner with SIT to support their student visits and research projects in the region. Open Paillao Mapu Ruka and Hostel for the community, visiting students, researchers and educational tourists. Create tourism related jobs within the community. Build longstanding relationships that move us closer to a just, sustainable and peaceful global society.

4 Create an educational tourism program to support cultural exchange and research in the region. Inspire, in those we meet, a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the entire human family, the greater community of life, and future generations. Community Health Education and Outreach Project Odakniwa Directors in Charge: German Curiqueo/Deborah Carrasco Develop a community health program through collaboration with the Universidad Mayor de Temuco Department of Health. Document and analyze Pedro Curiqueo s health profile. Conduct community heath workshops with medical students and Universidad Mayor medical advisors. Expand medical health services to include a full range of primary health services including ophthalmology, counseling and dental care. Based on the community health needs bring mobile health specialties to the communities. Continue to offer additional health workshops. Mentor members of the community interested in pursuing health related careers. Long Term Outcome Develop a Medical Post designed by the Project Odakniwa multi-cultural design team, built through the construction apprenticeship program and staffed by Universidad Mayor health professionals and medical students. Expand services to other communities. Public Engagement and Donor Relations Project Odakniwa Directors in Charge: Catherine Gillette/Silvia Ochoa Identify Chilean-American groups who are likely to support Project Odakniwa. Develop a student volunteer network at the College of Wooster, Universidad Mayor de Temuco, Universidad de la Frontera Conduct educational, fundraising and volunteer recruitment events at multiple locations. Keep the website and facebook current Continue quarterly newsletter (Mari Mari) publication. Upgrade the website to be more interactive and contain more educational information. Create a Razoo or similar platform that allows for project specific fundraising. Expand the student volunteer network to Universidad de la Frontera and Universidad Catolica de Temuco. Develop and implement a donor recognition plan.
