6 Photography requirements It is a requirement that photographs be submitted as a part of your Housing & Construction Awards entry. Each category segment has a specific set of requirements regarding the photographs. Upon receipt of the entry, should these requirements not be met, the entry will be considered incomplete and will not be processed. Should your entry be shortlisted, the judges use photographs in their final deliberation and, if your entry wins an award, we will use the photographs in the awards audio-visual show, to promote the awards to the media and across a range of official publications and multiple materials. Housing General Categories For all housing categories (inclusive of the Residential Trade Contractor of the Year category), a minimum number of 18 photographs of the finished project are required. These photos should all be in landscape. Breakdown of minimum photos: 5 x external shots (3 of the full front façade, 2 from the back of the house. These shots should include front entry, landscaping and any outdoor areas like pools, patios and decks) 8 x internal shots (include photos of kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas and media rooms) 5 x feature shots (showing a particular point of interest in the project fixtures and fittings, use of materials etc) Housing Renovation/Remodelling Categories: For renovation categories, it is STRONGLY encouraged to take before photos of the project to be used in addition to the minimum photos of the finished product. The inclusion of these before photos will accurately portray to the judges at Regional, State and National levels the extent of the renovation and the difficulties involved. Regarding the photos of the finished project, please ensure you provide photos of the renovated works, not the pre-existing works not included in the contract price. Best Use of Sloping Sites For entries in the Sloping Site category, the feature shots should display the orientation on the site and any difficulties of building on a sloping site. For example, a shot displaying the how the house sits against the steep slope. Best Use of Steel Frame Housing For entries in the Steel Frame Housing category, it is recommended to include some photos of the build, showcasing the steel frame used. Excellence in Sustainable Living For the excellence in Sustainable Living category, the feature shots should include photos of the sustainable aspects (e.g. Solar Panels, cross flow ventilation etc.) Specialty Awards (potential eligibility) If you believe that the pool, kitchen or bathroom is particularly special and could end up nominated for one of the Specialty Awards by the judges, please ensure you include extra photographs of these. 6

Signing a release form Please ensure the Photographer s Authorisation section of the Housing and Construction Awards Authorisation form has been signed prior to submitting your entry. Master Builders will not reproduce a copyrighted photograph without appropriate authorisation from the photographer or studio. If supplying professional photographs, please complete the photographer authorisation section of the entry form. This section indicates that permission has been granted for Master Builders to use the professional photographs as part of the Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards program including publishing photos in magazines, newspapers and other media outlets, as well as in any audio visual presentation or promotional campaign Photography Tips & Tricks Tips to meeting your minimum photography requirements: Here are a few tips on how you can ensure you have met your minimum requirements for your entry s category. For all categories (excluding Individual Award photographs), photographs that contain people in them will not be counted towards your minimum number of photographs. This is irrespective of whether they have been added into the photoshoot. Try using a variety of viewpoints in the room or space. This will ensure that the whole project is captured accurately. Housing categories: make sure you have at least 5 photos of the kitchen or bathroom included, in the event of the judges awarding your project the award. Ensure all of the photos are all high resolution and meet the minimum size requirements. If there are less than the required number or in the incorrect format, you will be asked to provide more photos for the entry. 7

8 Taking photos Unfortunately, many of the photos we receive cannot be published because they are poorly composed. Please check that there are no people or any obscure objects in the pictures. This includes various building materials, towels and clothing in rooms, ensure kitchen benches are clear and cars are not in driveways, especially showing number plates, as the judges want to portray the finished project. Please be mindful of the angle used when taking the photos, avoid using a fish-eye lens and keep the pictures as level as possible. Here are some tips from professional photographers to help transform your images: Simplify the scene. Choose a clear focal point and keep the other objects out of the picture. The simpler the shot, the bigger the impact. Please also make sure the house is tidy, without objects on benches and desks. Fill the frame. Or get physically closer to the subject. Filling the frame makes the subject appear larger and cuts down on the clutter. Don t just concentrate on your subject. Look at what s happening in the background too. Please ensure that photos do not contain any building materials. Changing your position is often enough to replace a cluttered background with one that complements your subject nicely. Pay attention to the way the light falls. Outside shots should be taken with the sun behind you, not the subject otherwise the subject will appear black. When inside, use as much natural light as possible by opening the blinds and not switching on the lights. The time of day and the weather plays a large part in the successful lighting of the project. The best pictures are taken at dusk, with softer lighting. 8

To be eligible for entry into the Awards, the project/house must meet the following criteria: o Have reached practical completion and be in all other respects complete, no earlier than 1 January 2017 and no later than 31 March 2018, to enable the judges to walk through and make a thorough physical assessment of the project o Be located in Queensland o Must not have won a Master Builders Award in the same category in a previous year. The entry and submission must be completed in full, giving all details and supporting documents as required. Payment must be received with the entry for the nomination to be processed. To be eligible for any early bird discount, entries must be paid for in full on or before the advertised early bird date. Entries that are not paid in full by this date will be converted to the standard rate and an invoice for the balance will be issued. Master Builders accepts no responsibility for entry submissions not received by Master Builders for any reason. The entrant must obtain permission from the owner to enter the awards prior to nominating a project/house for an award. Master Builders reserves the right to refuse to accept any entry and shall, at its own discretion, at any time prior to the award ceremony, declare an entry ineligible where the: o Entrant s membership with Master Builders has been cancelled or suspended o Entrant is found to be unlicenced o Entrant s license has been cancelled or suspended by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). o Entrant has not complied with the Conditions o The entry is incomplete or does not contain all of the supporting documents o The entry fee has not been paid in full o Entrant has not obtained prior permission from the building owner to submit the Project for entry or o Information provided by the entrant is deficient, false or misleading in any way. Where an award has been given and it is found that the entry has not satisfied the conditions of entry, the award may be withdrawn and returned to Master Builders. In the event that an entry is withdrawn or disqualified, after the judging process has commenced, a refund will not be issued. Entry submissions, including all documents and photographs submitted to Master Builders with the entry, are the property of Master Builders. As the Awards are a competition, unfortunately it is not possible to provide feedback on individual entry submissions. Judges notes will not be supplied to entrants, their representatives or the media. Entry submissions may be supplied to Master Builders Australia, should the entry be selected to represent Queensland in its respective category at the Master Builders Australia National Excellence in Building & Construction Awards. Rising Star, Women in Building and Apprentice of the Year entrants must be working in a trade or profession in the building and construction industry in Queensland. If entrants choose to purchase tickets to the Awards presentation event on the assumption that they will win an Award, in the event that the entrant is not a winner, Master Builders will not refund the ticket fee. Master Builders reserves the right to change these conditions of entry at any time without prior notice. Judging The Awards are comprised of 57 categories, plus three (3) Major Awards (House of the Year, Project of the Year and President s Award) as outlined in the entry handbooks. A project must win its category to be eligible to win a Major Award. The Major Awards are awarded at the judges discretion only. These categories are not available for separate entry. Queensland Awards: Winners in each of the Regional Award categories will be eligible to progress through to the Queensland Awards judging process. Please note: This is exclusive of Discretionary, Perpetual and Memorial Awards. National Awards: All Eligible Queensland Award winners will be submitted at the discretion of Master Builders and the judges, to represent Queensland in their respective category at the Master Builders 24

25 Australia National Excellence in Building & Construction Awards. Please note: the submissions that are put forward for the National Awards are in line with the National Awards categories. Not all Queensland State category winners fit into these national categories. To be eligible for the Rising Star Award, the entrant must be operating as a sole trader, in a partnership, or a director of a company. The entrant must hold a current contractor license in a builder category (Low Rise, Medium Rise or Open) under the Queensland Building and Construction Commission Act 1991 in the state of Queensland and have held such a license for no more than seven (7) years. To be eligible for the Women in Building Award, the entrant must be a female who is currently in a trade and/or profession in the building and construction industry. No formal qualification is required for this award. To be eligible for the Apprentice of the Year Award, the entrant must be either currently completing an apprenticeship or have completed their indenture between 31 March 2017 and 31 March To be eligible for the Institute of Building Consultants Award, the entrant must be currently employed by a member or be a member of the Master Builders Institute of Building Consultants. A winner may not necessarily be declared in all categories in all regions. Each winner must meet the minimum score during judging to be declared a winner of the category. The judges reserve the right to split an Award category into two separate award categories. In the event that a category is split, only one of the two winners will be eligible to go forward for that Award at the Queensland Awards. This decision is at the regional judge s discretion only. For on-site inspections, the house/project must be available to Master Builders at an agreed time for the judges to conduct an on-site inspection of the house/project for the purposes of evaluating the entry in the Awards. The judges must have internal access to the building on the day of the inspection. It is the entrant s responsibility to gain permission to access the building, from the current owner of the building, prior to the inspection. Should access to the project not be permitted at the time of the allocated on-site inspection, the entry may be disqualified. The judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into by the judges or Master Builders. It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure that their entry complies with the published judging criteria for the category. Entries that, in the opinion of the judges, do not comply with the judging criteria may be disqualified or, at the option of the judges, judged under a different category to which the project was originally entered into. For projects, judging is based on the project presented at the time of the allocated on-site inspection, in conjunction with information submitted with the entry. For Individual Awards (Rising Star, Women in Building, Apprentice of the Year, Institute of Building Consultants and Diversity Awards), and all sustainable, environmental and workplace health and safety categories, judging is based solely on the entry submission provided. Entries are judged against a set of judging criteria. This is readily available via our online awards entry system. Publicity Every effort will be made to maximise publicity for all entrants. Master Builders will generate press releases and appropriate media coverage and packages throughout Queensland; however, entry in the Awards does not automatically ensure exposure in the media. Winners may be published in the Master Builder magazine, on the Master Builders website and in social media. Entrants give Master Builders and relevant third parties permission to market products and services to you as they see fit during the term of the awards. The information in your entry submission (including any photographs you supply) may be used by Master Builders to promote the Awards, including any Awards in future years. If you are an Award winner, Master Builders may use: o The entrant s name or business name and the name of the project anywhere in the world in any advertisement or other material which promotes the Awards or the products or services of Master Builders; and o Details about you or your business, your contact phone number, website address and the project in printed, electronic and internet-based media in promoting the Awards, without compensation to you. You agree to allow Master Builders to contact you to provide comments about the Awards and to take photos or video footage of you, your business and the materials. In relation to the materials: o You now assign to Master Builders solely for the benefit of Master Builders all of your right, property and interest in the copy of the materials submitted for the Awards; o In the event that any third party has any proprietary interest in the materials or any intellectual property rights contained in them, you agree to procure for Master Builders the right to use that copy of the materials in any way Master Builders sees fit without compensation to any such third parties or to You, including the right to make further copies of the materials; o You indemnify and agree to hold harmless each of Master Builders, the judges and each of their staff, servants or agents in respect of any claim, demand, liability, loss or damage sustained by 25

26 o o o o o o o any of them arising in any way out of use by Master Builders of the materials for the purposes of the Awards or their promotion; Without limiting the generality of anything else contained in this clause, Master Builders may use the materials for future promotional and marketing purposes without further reference or compensation to you or any third party; Master Builders may duplicate, alter, adapt and utilize the materials at anytime, anywhere, and by any means; Master Builders may license, authorise or otherwise license or transfer Master Builders rights in the materials to others to do the same; You acknowledge that, by entering the Awards, you grant (and undertake to procure from any relevant third parties a grant) to Master Builders on submission of the materials a worldwide, royalty free, perpetual, exclusive and irrevocable licence to use the materials for whatever purpose Master Builders sees fit; You unconditionally and irrevocably consent to any act or omission that would otherwise infringe any of your moral rights in the materials (as defined in Part IX of the Copyright Act 1968 (Cwlth)) and present and future rights of a similar nature conferred by statute anywhere in the world whether occurring before or after this consent is given ( moral rights ); You waive all moral rights in the materials that arise outside Australia; and You agree not to institute, maintain or support any claim or proceeding for infringement of your moral rights or any other rights you assert in, relating to or arising out of the materials Awards ceremonies Cancellations of ticket purchases, for any reason, received less than five (5) days prior to the event to which the purchase relates will not be eligible for a refund. Master Builders reserves the right within its sole discretion to add, withdraw, reschedule or substitute presenters or artists and may vary advertised programs, prices, venues, seating arrangements and audience capacity. In the unlikely event of cancellation of the event, the maximum liability of Master Builders is limited to a refund of the ticket fee with no additional liability for travel costs, hotel costs, or any other costs or expenses whatsoever. In the unlikely event of cancellation or postponement of the event due to circumstances beyond the reasonable control of Master Builders including, but not limited to, acts of terrorism, war, acts of God and natural disaster, Master Builders cannot be held responsible for any cost, damage or expense which may be incurred as a consequence of the event being postponed or cancelled. Attendees must agree (and you undertake to procure their agreement) that filmed material may be reproduced for these purposes as film, audio or written quotation. You also agree (and you undertake to procure agreement by relevant attendees) that neither you nor any attendees are entitled to remuneration, residuals, royalties or any other payment from Master Builders in respect of the images/footage. The photographs and footage may be used by Master Builders and relevant third parties. You accept the risk that photographs and/or film footage of you may be downloaded from Master Builders website, or taken from a brochure or other publication, and reproduced in social media or other websites or elsewhere, or otherwise communicated or made available to the public or sections of the public. Persons attend the events at their own risk. You and attendees must agree (and you undertake to procure their agreement) not to hold Master Builders liable for any losses, damages, expenses, costs, claims or liabilities suffered or incurred (including without limitation any consequential or indirect losses or loss of profit) arising out of or in any way related to booking for the events, attending the events, cancellation of the events, failure of the events to achieve expectations, or for any error or omission by Master Builders or any of the judges. You and attendees must agree (and you undertake to procure their agreement) not to hold Master Builders liable or responsible for any personal injury (i.e. physical, psychological or emotional stress) or any loss or damage to personal property. Attendees are not permitted to use photographs and/or video footage taken on their (or anyone else s) personal device for commercial purposes. If you choose to purchase a ticket to the event on the assumption that you will win an award, in the event that you are not a winner, Master Builders will not refund the ticket fee. Copyright 26
