1 Georgetown GLOW Winter Public Art Exhibition Call for Artists and Request for Proposals The Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID) invites artists to submit proposals for new, site-inspired public art work to be installed in Georgetown as part of the Georgetown GLOW Winter Public Art Exhibition, an outdoor display of public art and light installations on view from Friday, December 12, Sunday, December 14, The Georgetown GLOW Winter Public Art Exhibition is open to artists working in all mediums, including performance, video, sound, and 2-D work. While there are no specific geographic limitations, preference will be given to local and regional artists. We are seeking proposals for work that creatively incorporates light; explores concepts of space and place; inspires public interaction; and utilizes and responds to specific sites within Georgetown. The exhibition aims to highlight the historic Georgetown neighborhood through innovative public art works. The installations will be lit nightly from 6 pm to 10 pm on the evenings of December 12, 13 and 14. Background In December of 2013, the Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID), in partnership with Alliance Francaise D.C., hosted Fete des Lumieres Georgetown, an exhibition of public installations by four international artists. Inspired by one of Europe s most celebrated festivals, the Fete des Lumieres or Festival of Lights, held annually in Lyon, France since 1852, FDLG 2013 was the first time that any of the Lyon installations had been exhibited in the United States. Sponsors included Art Soiree Productions, SPAIN arts & culture, The JBG Companies, Wallonie-Bruxelles International and EDF (Electricite de France). Building on the success of last year s event, we will revisit the theme of light with the Georgetown GLOW Winter Public Art Exhibition. Budget The Georgetown BID will select up to 4 artists. The BID will provide an artist fee of $2000 to each selected artist. This fee will include all costs associated with materials and physical execution of the installation. Georgetown BID will provide electricity needs and overnight security for each project if and when on public property. 3 Proposal Submission Process To be considered, each applicant must submit a signed application, which includes a CV, description of the proposed project, completion of supplemental questions, 4 high-resolution images of previous work, and a rendering of the proposed project. Applicants are permitted to submit no more than two project proposals for consideration. All proposals must be submitted to ehiggins@georgetowndc.com with the subject Georgetown GLOW Exhibition Proposal by 11:59 p.m. EST on Thursday, October 30, General Terms 1. Once selected and under contract and upon receipt of final sketches, finalists will be paid 50% of the artist stipend. Upon completion of the installation, the remaining 50% of the stipend will be paid. 2. The BID reserves the right to reject any or all proposals, advertise for new proposals, and negotiate revisions to installations as may be deemed in the best interest of the project. 3. Designs that may be objectionable to a substantial segment of the community (including residents, businesses, and tourists) should be avoided. 4. The BID reserves the right, at any time, to reject, remove, or modify any design or artistic element that it deems to be not in the best interest of the project or a threat to public safety. 5. The BID reserves the right to move the location of your piece if permitting or safety deems it necessary. 6. Applicants must submit complete responses to all of the information requested in order to be considered. 7. The review panel reserves the right to award applicants one or more installations as deemed appropriate by the review panel. 8. Application materials will not be returned. 9. This RFP does not constitute any obligation by the BID to engage any applicants nor to complete the project described.
