This round table will assess the merits and challenges associated with a range of tools and processes to manage an innovation portfolio. How can we choose the right opportunities, and still keep and develop projects that are no longer aligned with an organisation s strategy? We will look at the operational level approaches to monitoring innovation programmes, considering practical tools to enable R&D to meet the needs of business strategies. < What best practices can be adopted for project and portfolio management for innovation? < How should risks be assessed and monitored in business planning for product development? < How can we kill failing projects early and learn from them for future projects? < Companies increasingly have a portfolio approach to business models as well as products. In order to be successful in creating, assessing and marketing innovations you need to protect them: - by creating suitable IP rights as patents, designs, trademarks, copyrights, - by making a smart balance between keeping essential know-how confidential and disclosing it to the public, - and by ensuring the company s freedom to operate when launching such innovations on the market. To keep this competitive advantage over the time and to control costs of your innovation budget these two portfolios should be managed synchronously by a multi-disciplinary team including marketing, technical and IP experts. This presentation will describe hands-on practices on how to manage such innovation and IP portfolios in a good way and how to avoid pitfalls.
