Increasing influence of shareholders and global competition require large companies to adapt. As companies are reorganizing their operations into more independent entities, how will corporate R&D operate, adapt and thrive in this structure? It includes a range of technology-related governance tasks, as well as services such as offshore SW development or patent services. At the heart of CT are two research departments with a total of 1,600 researchers, who are tasked with driving Siemens research agenda in technology fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security or Power Electronics. Recently, Siemens has introduced a new approach Company Core Technologies, which somewhat redefines the role of corporate research also in the light of an ongoing discussion about the future of conglomerates. Norbert Lütke-Entrup, Head of Technology and Innovation Management, Corporate Technology - Siemens AG :30 Leading Philips into the future The over 125-year journey of Royal Philips has been a roller coaster, with periods of rapid growth and diversification, riding the waves of technology disruption, divestments and acquisitions. Today the company focuses on Health Technology, with the aim to provide innovative products, systems, software, and services to professionals and consumers across the continuum of care. During this journey, Philips Research and more broadly speaking the CTO organization has been through four phases. First, the beginning and diversification from a common technology base working directly with manufacturing. Second, autonomous research. Third, reconnecting to the product divisions. Fourth, becoming a front-end innovation organization working closely with businesses, markets, and ecosystem partners. Today, the CTO organization plays a strong role in enabling the transformation to integrated solutions, creating and leveraging digital platforms, driving the adoption of data science and AI, and professionalizing the approach to new business creation. This requires a

strong orchestrating role across the Philips businesses, with attention for the right balance between customization, configurability, and re-use.

What has started as external ideation contests has now developed into a variety of crowd innovation approaches. Especially crowd based approaches within Siemens have proven a very efficient method within the R&D ecosystem, linking corporate researchers with innovators within the operating divisions. 4 14: Evolution of the R&D Model at DuPont and Future Directions Created more than 100 years ago with a key focus on chemistry and polymer science, the Experimental Station has been from its creation a primary example of industrial research in the United States and of strong commitment of DuPont to corporate research. Naturally the model and the organization of research across DuPont has progressively evolved to being very different from the one created several decades ago. Very recently the merger between DuPont and Dow Chemicals has created organizational and planning complexities on a scale not experienced before, but also opportunities to rethink the meaning of corporate research in the chemical industry in the 21st Century and what its mission and focus should be going forward.
