2 ABOUT THE PROGRAM The SwitchMed initiative is a regional program made up of several components financed by the European Union. SwitchMed is implemented by means of the combined efforts of the European Union, the UNIDO, the UNEP/MAP, the SCP/RAC and the UNEP-DTIE. The global objective of the SwitchMed initiative is to facilitate the transition towards more Sustainable patterns of Consumption and Production in the southern region of the Mediterranean. The countries covered by the program are Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon. Viridis Investment Fund (VIF) - Fondation Diane was selected by SwitchMed to organize a public event titled Green Start-ups Meet Investors Elevator Pitch. ORGANIZED BY The Regional Activity Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP/RAC) is a centre for international cooperation with Mediterranean countries on development and innovation in the production sector and civil society, based on more sustainable consumption and production models. 5 STARTUP BASMA FOR AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS Basma Apple-West Bekaa farms is an innovative, dynamic and socially responsible company determined to give a healthy food choice to their customers (olives, wheat, wine grapes, etc.). It is a family business owned by the Nahas family. After the apple crisis in Lebanon in 2015, the company decided to have a new strategy and focus more on optimizing the processes used in agriculture. The strategy is to rely more on the economy of scale and grow more complementary crops to apples within the same orchard surface. The new crops will improve the soil and increase the global revenue. On the other side, they will be adding a packaging center along with a solar system to provide electricity to the new cold room they are adding and switch the irrigation system from fuel to solar system (100% saving of fuel). All the small apples are processed to become agri-foods products. As a Lebanese producer, they work towards building a better Lebanese image abroad for ouragricultural products. 6 STARTUP EASY WALL EASY WALL is blocks made from recycled plastic bottles. One block is made of 60 recycled plastic bottles. These colored blocks with 20 x 20 cm dimension, are easy to build similar to Lego. Due to the transparency of the plastic materials, LED lighting is installed between the EASY WALL blocks. Architects and engineers can use these blocks for interior walls and furniture design. 7 STARTUP FABRIC AID FABRICAID.ME FabricAID collects clothes from academic institutions, businesses, municipalities and NGOs. For every kilogram of clothes donated, 0.5$ is forwarded to a charity of the donor s choice. The collected clothes are aggregated at our warehouse where they are graded, sorted and cleaned to be sold at extremely affordable prices to marginalized communities through thrift shops. Struggling youth are employed at FabricAid s shops where they learn all necessary skills and get a portion of the revenues. Our goal is to offer under privileged people good quality clothing at affordable prices and help Lebanon to reach zero fabric waste. 8 STARTUP SMART BUS STOP LEBANONBUSES.COM Smart Bus Stops or SBS is a social, environmental and business -oriented start-up project. SBS was founded by 3 young passionate engineers who aim to improve the public transportation system in Lebanon. After careful consideration, it was realized that the largest volume of traffic was found to come from busses. The SBS can not only fix traffic, roads, and transportation means issues, but it can also build a stronger community, encourage communication amongst citizens, and bring people together. We have currently implemented 4 bus stops in Beit Mery and renovating 4 more, and 2 upcoming ones in Amchit. This project has a great environmental impact where it is reducing pollution and reducing electrical consumption. 9 STARTUP INNOVATING GREEN TECHNOLOGY PRO-SHIELD PRO-Shield is an innovative covering mechanism mounted on the solar water heater regardless of its size, type, and brand, protecting it against the hazardous effects of the overheating problem and hence enhancing the renewable energy reliability and efficiency. Upon our continuous testing on our testing unit at AUB since 16 months, PRO-Shield proved its capability of increasing the solar water heater life-span by 30% and efficiency by 40%. PRO-Shield is capable of: Prevent loss and evaporation of water, thus saving our vital resource. 11 STARTUP LEBANON BUSES LEBANONBUSES.COM Lebanon Buses is a platform that will try to reform the public transportation system in Lebanon. Drivers will register their paths and passengers will be able to tackle the location of the bus. A first version of the application has been finalized. Due to the application, the transportation in Lebanon will be organized, and as a consequence, more people will use public transportation, that will lead to improving the air quality. 12 JURY PANEL Ms. DIANA FADEL Founder & President, Fondation Diane In 1965, Diana started her philosophy studies at L ecole des Lettres in Beirut. She then Co-founded ABC Department Stores, with late husband Mr. Maurice Fadel, in During the Lebanese civil war in 1975, she moved to Paris with her family where she continued her studies at Paris X Nanterre university from which she graduated in years later, Diana created Monuments en Musique, in an effort to preserve and salvage important and often abandoned Lebanese heritage and iconic sites, which went on from 1998 to 2008 through 45 variously themed music concerts. After struggling with disease from 2010 to 2013, Diana went on and founded Fondation Diane in 2015, which she currently heads as president. Ms. CORINE KIAME Investment Manager, IM Capital Corine is the Investment Manager at Insure and Match Capital Holding SAL (IM Capital) since April She supervises the matching & insurance capital process and manages the work of the analytical team. Corine is responsible for IM Capital operations, including deal sourcing, investment project evaluation and valuation, business models validation, value creation and mentoring in investments, and supervision of exits from investments. She is also a junior coach of the Seeders Business Angels group. Prior to joining IM Capital, and for more than 9 years, Ms. Kiame was a Director at SHUAA Capital psc Dubai, UAE, where her responsibilities included Product Development, Strategy and Project Management, and Operations. In 2006 and 2007, Mrs. Kiame worked as an assistant fund manager on several regional funds representing USD 1 Billion in assets under management, covering fifteen Arab markets. Corine holds a Masters in Finance from Paris IX Dauphine in Paris, an Executive Education Certification from Harvard Business School with emphasis on Private Equity and Venture Capital, and is currently a member of the Grant Evaluation Committee of the isme Program, a Kafalat-World Bank program, and a member of the Lebanese League for Women in Business.
13 JURY PANEL Ms. MICHELLE MOURACADE Lebanon Country Director, Alfanar Michelle Mouracade is Alfanar's Country Director for Lebanon. Michelle has 20 years of experience in strategy, HR and organizational consulting across several sectors in the US, Europe and 7 locations in Asia. Her experience covers a wide range of industries and functional expertise, from banking to internet start-ups and from business development to strategic reviews. Amongst the highlights of her career, Michelle managed 3-4 million dollar projects for some of the biggest American banks while working as a Project Director at Proxicom, an internet consulting firm in New York. In her latest position as Head of Strategy & Organisation for Societe Generale Asia Pacific, she was instrumental in leading large organizational restructuring projects such as the offshoring of 30% of the support functions from 7 locations across Asia to Bangalore, India. Michelle is also a very passionate executive coach, certified by HEC France. In 2016, Michelle joined Alfanar to fulfill a strong desire to return to her homeland after 27 years abroad and to make a more meaningful contribution to society by leveraging her coaching and private sector experience in the social investment sector. Alfanar is the first venture philanthropy organization in the Arab world that invests in social enterprises, providing them with up to 400K USD in funding along with engaged management support, coaching and training. To date, Alfanar has supported 26 social enterprises that have impacted over 40,000 lives. On average, these organizations impact 36% more lives year-on-year and self-generate 49% more revenue. Mr. FADI NAFFAH - EMBA, PMP, CCE Program Manager, Agrytech With more than 12 years of international experience in management in different disciplines, Fadi amassed diversified knowledge in the fields of technology implementation and business transformation delivering value to stakeholders through engagements in consulting, project management, telecom, IT and software solution, operations, and entrepreneurship support programs. With a strong business mindset and a firm commitment to achieve excellence, Fadi actively advises early-stage startups in Lebanon and Africa. Fadi holds a Master in Telecom and Computer Science Engineering, an Executive MBA and PMP Certification.
14 COACHES PANEL Ms. MAYA KARKOUR Managing Director, EcoConsulting Maya Karkour is the Managing Director of EcoConsulting which she co-founded in the UK in 2003, and established in Lebanon in EcoConsulting offers interrelated sustainability services to the construction sector, including: LEED & BREEAM certifications, energy-efficiency advice, dynamic thermal modeling, eco-building guidance. Maya oversees or has directly worked on numerous projects aiming at reducing their environmental footprint including the eco-renovation of Casa Batroun, the first project in the Middle-East to achieve the British BREEAM Excellent certificate in February 2014, and the Lebanese Architects Sustainability Award in Maya holds an MSc (hons) in Environment from the London School of Economics & Political Science and is a LEED Accredited Professional, BREEAM Licensed Assessor, and Low Carbon Energy Assessor. Maya is currently the Vice-President of the Lebanon Mountain Trail Association, in charge of developing and implementing its Environmental Education programs, working with the Ministry of Education & public schools. Mr. DAVID MUNIR Co-founder and CEO, AltCity.me David Munir Nabti is Co-founder and CEO (Chief Entrepreneur & Organizer) of AltCity.me a high-intensity startup & innovation hub based in Beirut, and working across Lebanon and EuroMENA. AltCity recently launched Elevate Accelerator, a social impact startup accelerator established in partnership with UNICEF. He is also co-founder and General Director of Boot Camp SAL, a leading early-stage startup program in Lebanon established as a public-private partnership between AltCity, Al-Mawarid Bank, and Banque du Liban.
