1 FY 2015/16 YEAR IN REVIEW
2 EUREKA LOFT SCOTTSDALE Eureka Loft Scottsdale recently completed its third year this May and Economic Development, Library staff and generous partners finished a number of improvements to benefit the small business and startup ecosystem. These improvements were made possible as a result of donations totaling $10,000 from Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project. With these donations and matching funds from the Scottsdale Library, Eureka Loft Scottsdale continues to advance services in programming, events and mentoring to the local business community. Connect the Tech Speaker Series Economic Development partnered with Stealthmode Partners to deliver an eight week interactive speaker series that provided direct mentorship from local industry leaders and support on all areas of business. The series was well attended with more than 100 participants. The department will look to implement a similar series twice a year. KEY IGLIGTS & ACCOMPLISMENTS It s great to see the City working with industry leaders in the local business community to enhance the programs and events offered at Eureka Loft Scottsdale. - Ryan Quinn, BlackPantsPromotions.com Convened the Eureka Loft Scottsdale Advisory Group to seek new ideas, provide feedback and execute goals and initiatives. The group met three times last fiscal year and is comprised of 14 members consisting of partners, mentors and City Library and Economic Development staff. More than 1,500 program attendees over the last year participated in 225 programs at Eureka Loft Scottsdale. This increased programing and attendance was due to new recurring programs such as Starting your Startup and Connect the Tech Speaker Series. A new e-newsletter was created with more than 350 active subscribers to further promote the ecosystem and has resulted in average open rates of 42 percent. Multiple physical enhancements to the space were completed including new paint, signage, reception desk and Smart TV to improve the visibility of Eureka Loft Scottsdale for visitors. The Smart TV allows for the advertisement of events and weekly programs to be displayed. Service mark for Eureka Loft Scottsdale is pending registration certification following the completion of the application and review process. This will allow for the legally registered name of Eureka Loft Scottsdale to continue to be utilized as a service to the business community. Survey results show that more than 90 percent of attendees were very satisfied with programmed events and nearly 100 percent were very likely to attend a similar event in the future. In addition, more than 35 visitors filled out the survey at the reception desk that is featured on an ipad intended to collect data from the visitors and attendees at Eureka Loft Scottsdale. Graphics and Technology Improvements Eureka Loft Scottsdale received a fresh coat of paint and Smart TV to promote the events and services offered. The Smart TV will also function as a presentation screen so groups or individuals can schedule and utilize for meetings. These enhancements add to the critical elements found in spaces that appeal to entrepreneurs. As a regular presenter and attendee to programs, the updates made to Eureka Loft Scottsdale make the value of the space much more apparent and easier to promote throughout the Valley. - Chelsea Dygert, Dygert ConsultMent FilzFelt Sound Panels Due to the open space configuration and loft atmosphere, sound has always been a concern for guests at Eureka Loft Scottsdale. After determining that full enclosure would not be feasible, staff explored alternative solutions. As a result, the first phase of sound proofing was made possible by FilzFelt wool panels to help mitigate loud noise. The panels also add a creative and colorful aesthetic to the space. Eureka Loft Scottsdale is starting to feel like a space to innovate. I enjoy working at Eureka because I have essential resources for my business at my fingertips at no cost. - John Johnson, John B Creating 2 3

These funds, both from operating budgets of the Library and Economic Development Departments, along with donations from partners Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project were utilized for Phase I. The cumulative enhancement investments made over the last year totaled $20,457. Smart TV $3,015 Below is the future vision of Eureka Loft Scottsdale based on feedback from users of the space and input from the Eureka Loft Scottsdale advisory group. These furniture pod layouts are designed to encourage small businesses, entrepreneurs and mentors to utilize the space to conduct meetings and business on a regular basis. With new scheduling software, users will have the ability to schedule 1:1 appointments with industry leaders. The space would be designed to have flexibility and can accommodate larger events/programs. Phase II estimated improvement expenses are $30,000 based on figures generated from furniture quotes, technology upgrades and additional programming. Logo, Graphics and Paint $700 Mentor and business pod conceptual layout The FY 2016/17 City of Scottsdale capital improvement budget includes funds to replace carpeting in the Eureka Loft Scottsdale which will include a flooring design to help visitors navigate the space and also provide a visual delineation of various mentorship and meeting space areas. New Reception Desk $1,203 EL /96 C /96 E38 Pod furniture examples A conceptual layout provides visual context for the plans moving forward. Each furniture cluster/pod will allow for entrepreneurs, small businesses and general visitors to utilize the space for their daily business needs. Each pod will be identified on the appointment platform so mentors and businesses can reserve them on a case by case basis. This appointment and scheduling tool from Appointment Plus, a locally based firm in Scottsdale, will help encourage direct mentoring of approved mentors with entrepreneurs and small businesses needing guidance and assistance. TREE: Establish new way-finding to help visitors find the space and messaging to promote Eureka Loft Scottsdale both from an internal and external perspective. FOUR: Implement new technology platforms and service offerings by November 2016 to support the entrepreneurs and business community utilizing Eureka Loft Scottsdale. EIGT: Formally establish a mentor network to quantify and qualify the presence of their service and time to the business community. NINE: Work closely with the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce to advance the small business strategy with downtown merchants and engage new partnerships to enhance the service offerings at Eureka Loft Scottsdale. OPPORTUNITY FOR PARTNER SPONSORS Moving forward, we encourage new contributions to support the enhancements of Eureka Loft Scottsdale. These improvements allow for, but are not limited to the following activities with a focus on advancing entrepreneurship in Scottsdale: Symposiums $1,000 - $3,000 The department has the opportunity to partner with a number of programs and symposiums, often acting as an in-kind supporter through the utilization of public space and connections. Events in the past 12 months as examples include Think Tank programs with leading CEO s, a Cyber Security Forum, Phoenix Startup Week and more. Small Business Training $1,500 - $3,000 Small business training classes are most effective when taught by qualified, in demand mentors and trainers with proven curriculum and strong reputations for excellence. Providing resources for the right instructors will also increase the chance of strong impact on the small business community. Class opportunities are available based on support. Eureka Loft Enhancements $3,000 - $10,000 The Eureka Loft is the City s only dedicated space to the ideation stage of entrepreneurial development, and is utilized every day for activities from training programs to seminars to drop in meetings and mentor appointments. Completing enhancements of the physical space, such as furniture and other peripherals, will allow for greater direct impact to the startup community and increased traffic and use of Eureka Loft Scottsdale. Any donations received will be spent in partnership between the Economic Development Department and Civic Center Library. These enhancement costs may include but are not limited to signage, technology, programming and furniture designed to support Eureka Loft Scottsdale s objectives for FY 2016/17.
