4 GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2015 Message from Organizer Thank you for your ongoing understanding and cooperation for the Good Design Award. The Good Design Award 2015 will be carried out under a new system with inviting Kazufumi Nagai as Chair and Fumie Shibata as Vice Chair. Also, Topical Issue will be newly instituted in order to share that design is an important factor to develop a better society. Topical Issues are issues which Japanese society needs to confront, and themes which are expected to move the society as big concerns of people. How design relates to these issues now and what can design do for them in the future? Through these Topical Issues, we will engage in screening with always having an awareness of the issues and work to convey values of award winning designs to the society more than ever. In recent several years, a large number of people has applied for the Good Design Award, exceeding the number of Applicants of the previous year. Those who participate in this activity are so diverse, including people from companies and designers as well as organizations such as NPOs, local governments or educational institutions. We believe firmly that they feel great possibilities on thought and methodology in the form of design, with having precious pride in their roles to make the society better. It is an important duty of the Good Design Award to respond to such their enthusiastic feelings. In the increasingly complex society, I would like to promote activities to convey that design is necessary when people decide viewpoints and ways of thinking about or getting involved in things, with you and through the new Good Design Award. We look forward to another year of active participation in the Good Design Award. President, Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) Kazunori Iizuka 2

5 GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2015 Message from Chair Today, society, industry, and the whole way of life in Japan are undergoing a major transformation. Until now, design has stimulated industry and shaped our lives by continually creating physical objects. However, right now, in our changing society, our needs in regard to design are steadily evolving. We need to make widespread use of design concepts and perspectives to provide the impetus for things that will pave the way for the coming age. While believing that the existence of just one beautiful item can enhance the quality of our lives, it is also vital to discover and nurture emerging designs that hold new possibilities and potential, even if they are not yet fully formed. There is also a need to view various initiatives ubiquitous throughout society through the lens of design, even though they have never previously been recognized within this framework. It is precisely because the word design now permeates all kinds of settings in our lives and design has become such a familiar concept for people that we would like to actively demonstrate through the Good Design Award that design is equipped with the potential to change society for the better. Accordingly, the Good Design Award 2015 marks the start of a new initiative, with the selection of 12 Topical Issues. All of these Topical Issues are issues that society and we as individuals must strive to resolve. The judging process will be formed by the question of how design can influence these issues, a perspective that will function as the guideline for analyzing the design background. Furthermore, by presenting the award-winning designs in the context of these Topical Issues, we will endeavor to accurately communicate the value of each and every design. One could say that everyone interested in and involved with design on a day-to-day basis is a key contributor to efforts to shape our future lives and society. Through the Good Design Award, we would like to share with you the knowledge that design has the power to shape not only us, but also our surroundings, our communities, and the wider world. GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2015 Chairman Kazufumi Nagai Vice Chairman Fumie Shibata 3

7 Policy and Method of Screening How We Think About Design The word design is used to mean many different things, and its interpretation varies from person to person. However, most of these can largely be grouped into: 1. Design as a noun - the shape and appearance of things 2. Design as a verb - the act of thinking of and making new things At the Good Design Award, we think of design as a verb, and define it as a continuous creative thinking activity without end for the enrichment of our lives. When you look at design as an act or activity, it needs a guiding idea or principle, and the resulting creation can be understood as one solution to the question posed by that idea. We ask if that solution is a suitable answer to that question, but also place emphasis on the ideas or principles themselves, and the thinking and methodology that led the designer to that particular outcome. We also ask if it will contribute to a chain of creation in the future. These are the major considerations of the Good Design Award. Our Ideals If we think of design as a verb, then the Award is a work of design as well, and must work to improve itself every day. To define what good design is in these changing times, we must always be thoughtful, reflective, and in tune with society. Hence, we chosen five fundamental themes to be our guiding principles. HUMANITY HONESTY INNOVATION ESTHETICS ETHICS the creativity that guides the making of things the ability to clearly see the nature of modern society the vision to open up the future the imagination to evoke a rich life and culture the thoughtfulness to shape society and the environment In other words, to engage in creative activity that is attractive, that perceives the true essence of things, is grounded in high ethics, and is for human be-ings. No matter how the particular quality of the richness we seek changes, these ideals remain constant. These words not only guide the actions of the Good Design Award, but also form its definition of good design. Method of Screening The Good Design Award considers design to be an Endless and continuous creative thinking activity. Therefore, the judges treat the Subject Entry in front of them as Present based on the past as well as Processing stage towards the future. Based on the principle of the Good Design Award, the judges examine whether the design of the 5

8 Subject Entry is expected to make the lives of people and society affluent in the future from a neofuturistic perspective, through interviews about the background and process, etc. of such entry and observation of its actual item. That is, the screening for the Good Design Award is conducted through discussions focusing on the meaning and value that the Subject Entry will be able to have in the time axis, past, present, and future, regardless of the form (tangible or intangible) of the Subject Entry. Perspectives of the screening The screening for the Good Design Award is conducted by more than one judge in the face of the Subject Entry (actual item in principle). In conducting the screening, an ability to grasp the suggestion of entries is required of the judges. In order to demonstrate such ability, Thinking from multiple perspectives is focused on. For example, the judges are required to focus on direct usage and functions of entries as well as to examine entries both from a macro-perspective, such as an impact on society and global environment, and a micro-perspective, such as physical and psychological aspects of users, etc. Based on this Thinking from multiple perspectives and five standpoints HUMANITY, HONESTY, INNOVATION, ESTHETICS, and ETHICS set in the principle of the Good Design Award, the judges select entries matching the purpose of the Good Design Award through examining the following Screening perspectives and whether entries will be able to exhibit the maximum effect on the current users, industry, and society in an overall balance. Human perspective Whether due considerations, including usability, understandability, and friendliness, etc., are given to users Whether various considerations, including safety, security, environment, physically weak persons, etc., are given to maintain the credibility Whether the design gains sympathy of users Whether the design has attractiveness and induces users creativity Industrial perspective Whether issues are skillfully solved by using new technology and materials or through creativity Whether the item is reasonably designed or planned with appropriate technology, method, and quality Whether the item contributes to the creation of new industry or business Social perspective Whether the item contributes to the creation of new culture, such as a new method, lifestyle, communication, etc. Whether the item contributes to the realization of the sustainable society Whether the item suggests new value, such as a new method, concept, style, etc. to society 6
