3 Alice L. Ferris, MBA, CFRE, ACFRE Alice L. Ferris, MBA, CFRE, ACFRE, founding partner of GoalBusters, has over twenty years of professional fundraising experience, not including her tenure as the top cookie salesperson in Girl Scouts. Alice started her fundraising career as a volunteer at Wisconsin Public Television in Madison, Wisconsin, blowing bubbles onto the set during pledge breaks for the Lawrence Welk Show, which launched a 25 year affiliation with public broadcasting. As part of her services in outsourced development for small nonprofits, Alice is Director of Development for KAWC Colorado River Public Media in Yuma, Arizona, Foundation Director for the Change Your Brain, Change Your Life Foundation in Costa Mesa, California, and interim Director of Development for KGHR Navajo Public Radio in Tuba City, Arizona. Prior to launching her consulting practice full time, Alice served as Director of Development for Lowell Observatory, Foundation Director for Flagstaff Medical Center, and Director of Development for KNAU Arizona Public Radio. During her tenure at Lowell Observatory, the membership program more than doubled, and during her time at KNAU, she led the station to its first $1 million fundraising year. As Foundation Director for Flagstaff Medical Center, Alice directed FMC s philanthropic grants program, providing over $1.3 million in support to community health in the Flagstaff area. Alice was the 90th professional to receive the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) credential, which has been conferred on 101 fundraisers worldwide, and is a two-time honoree as AFP Northern Arizona Fundraising Professional of the Year. In addition, Alice served as Vice Chair, Member Services for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) International and continues to be an active volunteer. She currently serves on the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy- Canada Board and the ACFRE Credentialing Board, among other volunteer commitments. Alice is recognized for her on-air presence on many public television and radio pledge drives, and on national PBS fundraisers, including Downton Abbey, The Texas Tenors, Inside Foyle's War and Suze Orman's Financial Solutions for You. Alice earned her Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Radio- TV-Film and Economics and her Masters of Business Administration with a double major in Accounting and Management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She obtained her Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) in 1999 and is certified through She received her ACFRE in 2010 and has also been an AFP Master Teacher since 2006.

4 Jim Anderson, CFRE Jim Anderson, CFRE, Partner, has more than 25 years of sales and training experience through his positions with local media and national consumer research companies such as Nielsen Media, Simmons and Scarborough Research. Consistently recognized as a top revenue producer, Jim earned the Sales Executive of the Year, Negotiator of the Year, the New Business and Over Achiever awards among many other accolades. Jim s teams broke the corporate records for the largest group contract, highest rate of renewal and highest annual revenue. Looking for new opportunities in the third sector, Jim migrated into the nonprofit arena in 2005, and specializes in analyzing donor motivations, implementing marketing and social media campaigns, finding compelling stories for organizational case statements, and making any special event more effective and engaging. In addition, in underwriting sales for public broadcasting, Jim s teams set and still hold the records for highest gross contract year, highest gross contract month and the highest development year in station history. Jim has extensive multi-media production experience with focus in education and training programs. He wrote, directed and produced a series of interactive sales training video programs now implemented in more than 300 television and radio stations throughout the country. As a director/producer of Interactive Instructional Television and Distance Learning for Northern Arizona University (NAU), Jim produced programming utilized by educators in North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim. Jim earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in Broadcast Management with dual minors in Business Administration and Spanish Language from NAU. He is an Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Faculty Training Academy graduate and serves as President of AFP Northern Arizona. In 2010, Jim was honored as the AFP Northern Arizona Fundraising Professional of the Year, and in 2013, Jim achieved his Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) credential. A northern Arizona resident since 1982, Jim is the proud father of two adult children, Whitney and Justin. He speaks Spanish and is an avid photographer.

6 James Anderson, CFRE Jim Anderson has more than 25 years of sales and sales training experience and migrated into the nonprofit arena in Jim specializes in corporate sponsorships, donor motivations and the psychology of giving, marketing and social media campaigns, communications, media production and event hosting. In 2010, Jim was selected as the Association of Fundraising Professionals Northern Arizona Fundraising Professional of the Year and he is the President of the AFP Northern Arizona chapter. He received his Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) credential in Alice Ferris, CFRE, ACFRE Alice Ferris has over twenty years of professional fundraising experience, and specializes in strategic and development planning, board development, annual giving, nonprofit operations and public broadcasting hosting. Alice has served on a multitude of nonprofit boards over the last 15 years, including 8 years on the AFP International Board. In addition, she is one of 101 in the world to earn the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) credential. 8 What Do Donors Want? See Results Trust the Organization Appropriate and timely thanks They want to like YOU! We mostly focus on what s practical for us. We need to understand what drives our donors. 4

9 What s lapsed? I m a Supporter. Strategy: They are not lapsed unless they ask to be removed Wrong appeal I gave to YOU Strategy: Tear down silos. Think donor experience. 5

10 What s major? I give a LOT. Strategy: Reward longevity, cumulative giving. use of Time Always? Seldom? Never? 6

11 Who s major? I ll act how I m treated. Strategy: Create tiers of recognition. Express genuine gratitude. How do I give? (Changing the rules) But I like getting the perks. Strategy: Cultivate philanthropy beyond transaction. 7

12 Missing Stewardship You never call. Strategy: Schedule two appointments today. Internal jargon should stay inside It s okay to speak in shorthand in the office, but remember that s not the language your donors speak. 8

13 How significant is their gift? Talk to your donors regardless of size of gift. It s not about you. What s the donor focused motivation? 9
