12 Västerbotten Region (Baltic Sea group) "Model for future maritime transport systems" Umeå/Vaasa Oct Nov 2013 A seminar on board M/S Wasa Express, presenting a preliminary proposal for a renewed transport link between two cities situated on the Bothnian Corridor and carrying out a users survey on board. Organisers: North Sweden EU-office, West Finland EU-office in cooperation with the cities of Vaasa (Fi) and Umeå (S), NLC Ferry Ab Oy Mikael Öhlund, Chair of NLC Ferry Ab Oy and Mayor of the City of Umeå Speakers: Catarina Fant, Marketing Director NLC Ferry Stefan Damlin, CEO Wärtsilä Susanna Slotte-Kock, Director of development, City of Vaasa Isabella Forsgren, Head of planning department, City of Umeå Jan Teir, CEO NLC Ferry The Kvarken Multimodal Link is a major upgrade of an existing but inefficient maritime cross-border transport link between Finland and Sweden. It is situated on Priority Project 21 s Motorway of the Baltic Sea, north of the Åland islands, in the Gulf of Bothnia. It has direct connections to existing and planned rail and road networks on both sides of the border. The vision is to create a modern future maritime transport concept. The first part is to establish and upgrade a transport link and linking it to the existing transport networks. In the long term, the Kvarken Multimodal Link will in the future form a cost efficient link in the TEN-T Core/Comprehensive networks, which includes the Bothnian Corridor. The Project delivers wide benefits and a ferry utilising LNG as fuel to meet the IMO s MARPOL requirements on Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECA), new materials and technologies to deliver a lighter vessel, less energy intensive and capable of ice-breaking in winter conditions. The development of the transport link will be performed in a Public-Private Partnership. It is widely supported by national, regional, local organizations in both countries. Passengers and transport enterprises, authorities, decision makers and media from both countries and their concerned regions. 12
13 II. Independent partner other organisation/association organising a local event Europe Direct Hässleholm "How to improve people's quality of life throughout Europe and in particular the north-eastern part of Skåne?" Hässleholm Mid-Oct 2013 Workshop Organisers: Europe Direct Hässleholm Speakers: During the workshop we will discuss how to improve people's quality of life throughout Europe and in particular the north-eastern part of Skåne. After the workshops will we provide an presentation of practical solutions to common regional and urban challenges, e.g.: SMEs' access to credit and to the global markets, youth unemployment, demographic challenges, waste, water and natural risks management, congestion, pollution or high energy consumption. Summary of our proposed Local Event: The citizens in our area have an interest in discussing of social development and democracy. The purpose of the activities is to stimulate this interest further by recognizing Open Days. How is the EU working with local democracy and citizen participation today? For example, we will recognize local initiatives and other seminars during the workshops on focus what democracy or lack of democracy can lead to. We also want to discuss what role the EU can play in the fight against xenophobia and extremism. This is the background of the right-wing populist parties tend to receive greater support in many of the EU member countries, while events occur such as those in Norway summer 2011 and in Stockholm, it would be interesting to discuss what role the EU may have to curb these phenomena. These are not phenomena that are unique to Sweden. Increased xenophobia and extremism is something that affects all member countries. We at Europe Direct Hässleholm believe it is especially important to discuss because the right-wing Populist Party Sweden Democrats support is strong precisely in north eastern Skåne. In the 2010 elections to the municipal party received from 11.1% of the vote in Östra Göinge to 16.8% in Bromölla. Examples of questions that can be discussed: - Why these phenomena occur at present in the EU? - Can EU membership and a sense of European identity counteract xenophobia and extremism? - Can the European judicial system create a safer European society? 13
14 Potential partners include political parties, educational organizations, non-profit organizations, the municipalities when dealing with issues of democracy and citizenship. The target audience is the general public and local politicians and officials. 14
